Le Parkour: What is it?

PKUSA is both a home to southwest-based parkour teams in America and an information hub for any and all visitors who may not be familiar with the discipline of freerunning.  Peruse this section for a thorough explanation of what our sport entails and why we practice it.

Parkour, or freerunning, was created in 1987 by Frenchmen David Belle and Sebastien Foucan.  The goal of parkour is to advance one's athletic prowess to such a level that one can reach point B from point A, no matter what stands in the way - be it staircases, railings, walls, high falls, buildings or fences.  This can be accomplished through a smooth routine of various techniques such as vaults, jumps, rolls, flips and climbing in order to clear any and all obstacles presented to a traceur, or freerunner.

The first question in anyone's mind when they first hear this is, "What's the point?  We have stairs and things to make moving around easier."
Well, yes, such objects may make it easier to move around, but that's missing the point entirely.  Parkour is a venue not only to increase and maintain physical fitness in terms of endurance, agility and strength, but it is also an art and a philosophy.
No two people can practice parkour in the same manner.  Each and every freerunner trains differently, adding their own personal touches to time-honored techniques to create a subtle means of self-expression recognizable only by those who know to look for it.  As far as the philosophical side of it goes, freerunning is  a way of facing your fears, conquering them, and growing more confident in your abilities as you progress.  This mindset can be applied to everyday life to create an attitude that failure and apathy are not options.

Support PKUSA!

Although PKUSA is a non-profit organization, freerunning can be expensive on this level - costs of maintaining a website, enacting publicity segments, and things of that nature can add up.  As these expenses grow to be more than we can bear by ourselves, we rely on the generous support of fans and potential traceurs to get us by.  Please, don't by any means feel obligated, but if you are able and willing, even a dollar helps us keep things the way you see them now.  Thank you and God bless!
