Who is Lawry Love? well to sum up Lawry emigrated from Malta to Australia as a young boy in the late '60s. He studied at the School of Art in Adelaide and ran signwriting and commercial art businesses before starting a Tourism company and taking travellers from around the world into the outback. In the 90's Lawry decided to devote his time to art and travelled the outback looking for inspiration for his works. Lawry lived in Alice Springs for a number of years and became well known in the Art scene. He received a Highly Commended award from Clare Martin, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory for his portrait of Paddy Japaljarri Stewart an Aboriginal Elder and artist from Central Australia.
Lawry uses strong colour usually using acrylic or oils which allows him to get his ideas down quickly. He does not complicate images, he likes his message to be clear and clean. Lawry paints in different styles from abstact to realism. In 2001 Lawry was invited to develop an exhibition of works depiciting the plight of the Stolen Generation by the Central Australian Stolen Generation Association.
In 2002 his artworks where shown at the Yeperenye Festival in Alice Springs, which attracted over 30,000 visitors including former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, who signed one of Lawry's canvasses stating 'It all Happened' Malcolm Fraser. Later in the following year his exhibition 'Culture Shock' was shown in the South Australian Museum on North Terrace in Adelaide. The exhibition ran for 6 months due to its popularity. Lawry has become one of Australia's renowned and highly recommended artists. He has had many joint and solo exhibitions over the course of his career.
Over the past 5 years Lawry has been working more with Sculpture in wood, steel, stone and bronze.
More recently Lawry Love has joined forces with Master Sculptor, Ben van Zetten repairing 'Map the Miner', an 8 metre high cold cast bronze sculpture and a major tourism attraction in Kapunda, South Australia, which was recently vandalised and badly damaged. Together they are also restoring the 3.5 metre bronze sculpture of 'Curio' at Marrabel.
