Laurinburg Institute is a private, non-sectarian preparatory school offering residential education in grades 9 through 12. Laurinburg Institute reflects a history of excellence and achievement. It is now the only Black institution of its kind in the United States. Started in 1904 by Emmanuel Monty and Tinny McDuffie, with only a small piece of swamp land and a dream of providing quality education and guidance for black childen. That dream is being realized every day, but it has not been without a tremendous challenge.
The leadership of the School has remained in the McDuffie family through three generations. Frank H. McDuffie, Sr. son of Emmanuel and Tinny was President from 1953-1990 and was succeeded by his son Frank H.”Bishop” McDuffie. The family has truly dedicated their lives and committed themselves to the education and welfare of young men and women from all walks of life.
The school is particularly noted for its rich basketball tradition, having produced several McDonald's High School All-Americans. Its most notable basketball alumni include Sam Jones NBA Hall of Famer with the Boston Celtics and Charlie Scott, an All-American at UNC and NBA All-Star. Full Article
