Not the Yellow Rose of Texas
I'm not sure I even know what The Yellow Rose of Texas is (besides a really popular song in these parts). But this is a very pretty yellow flower on a cactus of unknown species. There are several growing out front of the roadside bread shop out in the country, and one nearby provides the shady spot for Velvet, the feline manager. I'm fascinated by the look down into the flower. Can anyone identify this cactus plant?

Wader & Gulls
When I went to the coast and visited with Ashley, I also had a chance to loiter near the Intercoastal Waterway and some canals that connect with it. It was getting on in the afternoon and I found a handy fence to strap my flexipod onto and shoot the birds. Though I'd like to think I'm a birder,in a very (very, very!) casual way, I don't know the names of these birds. Any help in that direction would be very welcome, indeed!
If I learn the names of
these
birds, will I have to start another blog about my birding adventures, hmm .... ?

Velvet and Cactus
This is Velvet. She lives out in the countryside beyond the city that I live near. She is purportedly a Russian Blue (or mix thereof) and a really sweet girl. She is manager of a roadside bread stand, and has lots and lots of room in which to roam and chase critters and vermin. She's lying under a cactus that is in bloom. When I pulled out my camera to shoot the cactus, the young (human) owner wanted pictures of her and her brother and then her and the cat. So I obliged and plan to send her prints later this week. You might even see pics of the flowers later this week, too!
