Back in the far distant days before we had the cordless pen, the waterproof teabag and the dog's treadmill, there was another important invention that took our lives by storm - the home computer.
Previously seen as the plaything of nerds and boffins, these little devices invaded the homes of practically everyone - hey, if they hadn't, you wouldn't be reading this at home now... what do you mean you're accessing this page at work? Crikey, what will your boss say?
The big thing about home computers is that you could play games on them (which might seem trivial now), and the games were relatively cheap... budget games from £1.99 (by the 'Mastertronic' range... all generally rubbish, but one or two rare gems) going up to approx. £10 - imagine that the next time you're spending £40 on a PS2 game!
The games came in cassette format, which was a pre-MP3 thing your grandparents might remember
and you'd actually have wait for the thing to load in - when I say wait, I mean wait - how does 5 mins + sound... can you imagine doing this nowadays in this high tech, 'I want it NOW' world?
For nostalgia buffs though - the following link will generate a smile or two... if you're old enough to remember the ZX Spectrum (that weird looking little black comp. with the rubber keys seen in the pic. at the top); if you're not old enough - take a look anyway!

Included there are classics such as Ant Attack (wow! 3D Graphics... okay, it looks dated now, but this was in the early days of computing and looked impressive at the time), Chuckie Egg, Manic Miner, Skool Daze and of course my favourite - Jet Set Willy.

Jet Set Willy was a game made in 1984, about a Miner cleaning up his house - collecting bottles and glasses after a wild party... unfortunately, his house had been taken over by floating demon heads, spinning rabbits and things that looked like those aniseed-flavoured pastilles you get in Licquorice Allsorts.
Sounds bizarre? Yep, it sure does... but this is still one of my favourite games of all times... okay, it doesn't have multi-angle shots or amazing intro movie sequences... but it does have a wee character who has the amazing ability to move left, right and jump!
You only need to use three keys, so no worries as to which of the zillion buttons to press in order to simply move the character!
