General Questions

    •    When does the story in the first graphic novel take place?
The story takes place one month after the zombie outbreak, which happened on September the 29th. When Math and Valerie arrived, there were only hundreds of humans left in North America. Later on it was revealed that the other isolated groups were destroyed leaving only one small group.

    •    When and where does the first flashback in the second graphic novel take place?
It takes place in Addison's secret underground lair in 1937. Addison's sign says he is not to be dusturbed until 1939.

    •    Where did the plane with the vampires come from?

The vampires on the plane flew in from Mexico.

    •    How did all the humans die so quickly after the outbreak?
Many people have argued that although the zombies could spread quickly, they would not have been able to kill so many people so fast. Two factors helped speed up the process. Not long after the zombie outbreak, several countries started to bomb each other in a panic. The other thing is Francis. He could smell the isolated groups of survivors and wiped them out by bombing them from a plane.

    •    What about the people on the International Space Station?

The astronauts on the ISS were probably brought down to Earth within days of the outbreak.

Vampires

    •    How do vampires come into existence?
There are two ways a vampire can be created. A child is born to two vampire parents, or an existing vampire turns a human. The latter involves having just enough blood to kill the human drained from their body. Not all the blood has to be drained by the vampire but the human needs to be at least bitten by the vampire before they die. To complete the process the new vampire has to drink around a pint of another human's blood.

    •    Can vampires live off animal, zombie or vampire blood?

Vampires can't live off of animal or zombie blood. The blood of other vampires also has no effect.

    •    How much blood do vampires need to prevent the hunger pains?

Vampires need very little blood to merely prevent the hunger pains, but to have enough energy to fight etc. they need a lot of blood. It takes one tablespoon every two weeks to prevent the vampire from turning into a schaemiac, one tablespoon per day to feel no pain at all and about half a pint a day to be at full strength.

    •    How do you kill a vampire?

Vampires can only be killed by being staked in the heart. NOTHING ELSE. They can be burned, decapitated etc. with no permanent harm.

    •    What abilities do vampires have?

All vampires have the ability to smell blood, some better than others. Most vampires are twice as strong as the strongest human of the same height and weight would be. Val had the best nose of all and Devian can fly. Other vampires have other types of powers as well.

    •    What influences the abilities a vampire will have?

If a human is turned into a vampire, the abilities they had as a human are enhanced, for instance a strong human will become an even stronger vampire. The powers of the vampire that turned you also come into play, for instance if Devian turned someone into a vampire they could probably jump extremely long and high distances. If a vampire is born the abilities of the parents have a lot of influence. For example, if Devian had a child that child could fly, since Devian comes from a line of flying vampires.

    •    How many vampires were there when the zombie outbreak started?

When the outbreak started there were around 200 vampires on Earth.

    •    What happens if a human child is turned into a vampire?
If a human child is turned into a vampire they remain a child forever. An example is the boy who stabbed one of the "Chain Gang" in the eyes on page 95.

Zombies

    •    What happens if you get bitten by a zombie?
If a zombie bites a person and the wound is fatal, the person becomes a zombie immediately. If the wound is very small it will take about 24 hours, during which the person gets progressively sicker until they die and turn. A person has to be bitten to turn into a zombie, scratches and punches have no effect.

    •    How do you kill zombies?
Zombies are killed when their head is sliced off or their brain is destroyed.

    •    How do zombies hunt?

Zombies hunt by being attracted to noise and lights.

    •    Do zombies decompose or starve?
They do not starve and they can last years, possibly forever, before decomposing.

    •    How many zombies are there?
There are approximately 5 billion zombies. Most of the remaining 1 billion or so people were killed during the nuclear war.

    •    What happens if a vampire bites a zombie or the other way around?
If a vampire bites a zombie, or a zombie bites a vampire there is no effect.

Schaemiacs

  •    Where do schaemiacs come from?
If a vampire goes 65 years without blood then they become a schaemiac. Addison Payne calls this process the "hunger pains" because the process is extremely painful. After 2 weeks, the pain becomes unbearable and the vampire's mind starts to go. Soon they become too weak to move. After the 65 years are over, something clicks, you regain strength, the pain goes away and you have the same mental capacity as before the process.

    •    What powers do schaemiacs have?
Schaemiacs retain their vampire powers and have the ability to create zombies. A schaemiac can also control the zombies he/she bit, the ones those zombies bit etc...

    •    How does a schaemiac control zombies?
A schaemiac controls zombies they made telepathically. It takes a concentrated effort to make them do difficult things and only the zombies close to the schaemiac's immediate area can be controlled. To give exact instructions the schaemiac must be able to see the group before they follow his/her instructions, but thoughts that are more general can be sent without seeing them first. With practice and experimentation schaemiacs can get better at their zombie controlling abilities.

    •    Is it possible for a schaemiac to control the zombies that were bitten by a different schaemiac?
It is probably impossible for a schaemiac to take control of another living schaemiac's zombies. It has been hinted at that taking control of a dead schaemiac's zombies might be possible.

    •    Can a schaemiac be killed?

Yes, schaemiacs are killed in the same way as vampires. If a schaemiac is killed, the zombies that were under their command remain zombies, just without a leader.

    •    Has there been a schaemiac before TFZ?
There was a schaemiac in the 12th century in Bulgaria. The outbreak was supposedly contained because the zombies couldn't travel so easily. It was later revealed that this schaemiac is Sofia, the veiled woman that we saw at the opening of the second graphic novel.

    •    Can vampires smell schaemiacs?

No.

Francis Murdo (TFZ) and Sullivan Davis

    •    How did TFZ end up at the bottom of the ocean?
TFZ got buried at sea after playing dead. He emerged 65 years later and walked out of the sea on a beach in L.A. and bit a girl called Marissa.

    •    How did Sullivan Davis and TFZ become vampires?
TFZ and Sullivan Davis were both soldiers in World War 2. Valerie turned Francis into a vampire during the war. Sullivan was turned by Addison Payne.

    •    What is the secret behind Sullivan's tunnel?
TFZ helped build Sullivan's tunnel in the 30's. In the 40's, a rule was made that only military veterans were to be told about the tunnel. The veterans had an exclusive club or secret society with various activities in the tunnel. The whole "operation" was linked with the knowledge that vampires existed, and the tunnel walls were lined with garlic as a precaution.

    •    Why did TFZ let himself get shot in the head?
TFZ let himself be shot on purpose. He wanted to find out what effect a bullet to the head would have on him and it allowed him to get closer to the humans to spy on them. Also he was emotional at the time and didn't care much if he survived.

Sofia

    •    Who is Sofia?
Sofia is the Bulgarian schaemiac from the 12th century that Devian mentioned.

    •    Who is depicted on her ring?

Sofia's ring bears an engravement of herself before she became a schaemiac.

    •    What was Addison referring to when he said she was practicing?
He was referring to her controlling her zombies mentally.

    •    Is there any significance in having Sofia wear a headdress?
No. The only reason why she wears it is to conceal the damage caused by the hunger pains.
