Welcome to the webpage of my first "true" GUI program. The reason why I don't call the TicTacToe applets my first GUI programs is that they don't employ widgets like this one.
I have long been an advocate of raising the minimum driving age to 18. The primary basis for my position is that minors have no real need to drive (because they got along fine until 16), and, therefore, it is worth removing unnecessary cars from the road to save the thousands of lives that are lost every year because of them. However, I've also told my peers that utilizing other forms of transportation, such as bicycles, city buses and school buses, is much more efficient than driving a car and working at a near-minimum-wage job to pay for it. Although I've manually calculated that, in my situation, riding my bicycle and riding the city bus for activities outside of school is at least 100% more efficient than driving a car (these calculations were made with very conservative estimates), I'm determined to be able to quickly make these calculations for any fellow student I may discuss this with. To do this, and to learn about Java's widgets and GUI capabilities, I wrote the applet below. It is based on the assumption that the student pays for all expenses by working for $8 per hour.

Please keep in mind that the calculations are still under tweaking. Please read the instructions below the applet if you are confused. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the program, please email me at lasindi@gmail.com.

This applet calculates how efficient driving vs. riding a bicycle or bus to and from Mayfield High School is. Select the correct settings and press the "Calculate" button. An "equivalent hour" is an hour used while driving a car, riding a bus, etc. or an hour spent at a job paying $8 per hour to pay for expenses, such as auto insurance or bike maintenance.

All monetary values are in dollars.

If a text field remains uneditable that should be editable after changing the distance from your home to school, please click the "Calculate" button to update the applet. The text fields should then become editable.
