The history of Landhuis Daniel

It is thought that plantation Daniel was established around 1650 by a shipwreckling who washed ashore on the holiday of Saint Daniel. According to Newton, Daniel was named after Daniel Ellis -an Englishman employed by the Dutch West Indian Company- who built the plantation house in the first half of the 1700s, being -according to Ozinga_ one of the oldest, still existing plantation houses of Curacao. The plantation house is located alongside the road to Westpoint, formerly described as : the plantation Daniel alongside the road, called "the Prayer without ending".
Agriculture and cattle breeding was never very succesful at Daniel and in the 1800s the plantation was put on auction several times. In the 1900s the plantation was abandoned and in the 1950s the plantation house had become a ruin.In 1976 it was rebuild by a Dutch contractor -Van Lieshout- who restored the plantation house in it's original state as much as possible. Since then plantation house Daniel is considered one of the best preserved plantation houses of
Curacao.

In 1998 Daniel was added to the list of historical buildings of the "Stichting Monumentenzorg Curacao" (Foundation for monument maintanance).

Upon the arrival of Francke in 1997 the property was thouroughly renovated and made into a small hotel and restaurant, preserving the authentic atmosphere of the plantation house.
