The best way to succeed is to do something you love. I wondered what is the best way to survive? I learnt doing something you enjoy doing. Somehow all of that equaled me becoming an artist and activist. Both are questionalble to me.
Before my release from my past , I decided there was a need for prisoners. I created Serving-N-Time. The goal is to help current prisoners to stay connected to the "free Society" by giving caring people in the community an opportunity to become pen pals.
It is my belief that the only way to make our communities a better place is to care about the people in our communities. This means everyone living there and not just the people you like. For an ex-offender to be productive, there has to be a feeling of acceptance. This creates opportunities. Most individuals lose contact with their loved ones after they are sentenced to do time. My goal with the website is to help them stay in tune with society. This gives them hope and something to build and look forward to. Anyway, the idea snow balled into something else after meeting my dream maker, Ms. Brooks. She is a phenomenal business counselor. We took my simple idea and expanded it. Then CONTACT VISITS was born. With this nonprofit, the mission is to assist ex-offenders and troubled youth transition back into their communities with real second chances. I knew that one of the biggest barriers facing ex-offenders was a lack of housing and jobs. I started networking with businesses and organizations to accomplish this hefty task. Then I realized that funding was a major obstacle. It's a war out there to secure government funding and partnering with established organizations proved to be a bigger battle. The government seem to favor organizations with a track record or history of doing this type of out reach. This is where the WHO YOU KNOW is evident. Lack of funding prevents many grassroots organization from ever opening their doors. However, I have been successful in helping a few brothers and sister with their second chance but not to the degree that I anticipated. Fortunately, one of my business meetings for CONTACT VISITS turned into my entry into acting. Long story short. I was told by Archie Childs (Founder of the Ozziddi Project) to connect to this statue of actors. It is a position with everyone is connected and frozen in that position. Each individual came out of there frozen position and acted out a few minutes of a skit.. When it was my turn, I did the same. The actor was born. I went on to perform around Washington, DC with the Ozziddi Project. We did shows in places like the Lincoln Theater and Howard University. Soon I was the vice president of the Ozziddi Project.
A few months later I was invited by One Wise African to attend a spokenword venue that he hosted. I had never heard of this genre. After being there for a short while I decided to try spokenword. I got on stage and freestyled a piece. I was well recieved by the crowd so kept attending and doing new pieces. Two months later I went into a studio and freestled my debut album "IMAGINE". I left the Ozziddi Project to form LaCarey Entertainment, LLC which is a management company that oversees the careers of spokenword artist, actors, comedians, and models. Since starting LaCarey Entertainment, I have placed several actors on the hit HBO series THE WIRE and (feature film) Music High.
