Duchy Scroll for Thorstenn and Zephyrine

When the head of our house asked if I would like to do their Ducal scroll, I was honored, excited, scared and overwhelmed all at the same time.

I am basing the scrolls on borders of the Farnese Hours folios 79v-80r.  I love the flow and feel of it - the way the women are hiding to mourn and the puttos are sad.  I am going to have to make some changes to accommodate the wishes of Thorstenn and Zephyrine.  Thorstenn does not like the puttos aka "the naked babies." Zephyrine does not mind.

I used vellum, shell gold, and modern pigments.  I wanted to translate the text into German, cause they were doing a German reign, but did not have enough room.  I had to work the words into 17 lines of text.

The Words

I wanted the words to be as period as possible.  I looked all over the web for ideas and inspiration.  There are many helpful sites out there.  I had to make the text fit in 17 line, which is not easy for me.  I painted their names with shell gold and used oak gall ink that I made myself.

Thorstenn's

Let the deeds of Thorstenn the WrongHand be known so they are not lost in silence, or swept away on the current of time into the sea of forgetfulness.  Twice he bore the burden of Kingship and upheld the ideals of law and justice, allowing Trimaris to flourish.  Therefore We, Kurn and Eridani, King and Queen of Trimaris, do confer upon him the privileges and responsibilities of a Duke on this 28th day of March Anno Societatis XLIII

Zephyrine's

I will be as good to you as ever a Queen was and for the safety and quietness of you all, I will not spare if need be to spend my blood; so vowed Zephyrine De La Maige as she ascended to the throne of Trimaris.  Twice she bore the mantle of Queen with dignity and grace, fulfilling her vow.  Therefore, We, Kurn and Eridani, King and Queen of Trimaris, do confer upon her the privileges and responsibilities of a Duchess on this 28th day of March Anno Societatis XLIII
