I am reading Leon Battista Alberti "On Painting". Not an easy read. For example, he feels that colour should be use to imtate gold and that white is the best color. The use of light and shade creates depth and varations in color.
Remeber how early period manuscripts seem flat? Relief was build up in washes of colour. I personnaly love all illuminated manuscripts. It is so much fun to compare them and the different styles.
Alberti does make a point - one I hope I can communcate with my next A&S project. I am not sure if I understand it myself.
By adding different amounts of white and black in balance you can create movement, emotions, depth and perpective. I still have lost of reading to do before I understand it enough to be able to communciate it effectly . Alberti treatise "On Painting" is very important because it pushed what an artist can do and allow for individualism. It is still considered very important for modern artists. I can, however, see this concept in the folio I am going to re-create for A&S. [Folio 37] I did a test run with Folio f 51.
Saturday evening, I will take a green belt from Mistress Melesse. I am very exicted about this. It is a big step for me. When I played long ago - when I was younger - no one really took interest in me. At least, that I am aware of. I do not think that it was because I was not any good, I think it was because I WAS young.
When I was young so much in my life was choas. The person I was dating was wrong for me, we were like oil and fire together. WHOOSE! It was not his fault we were wrong for each other. We just were. But when you are so choatic, no one reallys wants to be around you. Can you blame them? Not really!
I am in a better place now. Better able to serve and learn. My husband, Lord Aodhagan is very good for me. We have our moments - what married couple does not. He supports me as I do him. Hopefully, he will soon take the red belt of a squire.
I just got my oak galls and new calligraphy nibs! Yea! If I had not had such a bad day at work I would be trying them out right now.
I have selected the recipe for my oak galls. It is from the Booke of Sercets and looks pretty easy. Wine, gum arabic, oak gall and iron. I hope that the ink comes out good but at least I can say I made it - even if it is not good and I have to use the store bought oak gall ink. It is all about learning.
