Relay for life 2008

It all started at Shirley Ladies night last year, when I was chatting to Kayla Norman and I asked her if she was intending to enter a team in Relay for Life 2008 as I would be interested in joining, she was unsure about it at the time but the then area vice chair, Helen Halstead suggested it was a great thing for the Area Charities office to be doing, when I asked who that would be for the next circling year, she replied ME!!
How to walk into an area post and head up a team for Relay for Life! But I have to say it was a great decision.
Kayla was soon on board as was Gail Ventress, Lesley Titley, Sharon Taylor, Sam Cowley, Jacqui Till, Amanda Dunn, some tablers, husbands, children and my sister; before we knew it Pip’s Posse had started to roll.
We arranged to hold Donation Stations for Cancer Research UK in Bromsgrove and Colshill, Quiz night in Kings Heath, a Pampered Chef evening in Redditch and a table top sale, as well as personal donations and sponsorship the money soon started to roll in, all we had to do was keep up the walking for 24 hours. At the last minute we were joined by Mandy Vines and her family.
On the day we were Cowboys and Indians, St Trinians and Superheroes, wearing guises from underwear on the outside, spots, sunhats and sunglasses and pyjamas, we captured other team captains and put them in our ‘stocks’ and demanded ransoms for their return and even enrolled Kylie Minogue in to Ladies Circle.
There were moments of fun and laughter and great emotion and camaraderie in the small hours with strangers who were there for the same reason as you…. To remember a loved one and help find a cure.
Pips Posse has raised over £7,500 for Cancer Research UK, and the weekend as a whole raised £92,500.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported all our team.
It really was 24 hours I will never forget, and I encourage anyone who has a space in their diary on 6th and 7th June 2009 to get involved.

The Three Peeks Challenge
|
Sonja Graham from Shirley Ladies Circle along with her husband Steve are heading for Africa in less than 2 months time for a 16 day African Three Peaks Challenge.
After one night to recover from the flight into Tanzania and a safety check of equipment, they will head straight into the trek up Mt. Longido, summiting at 8850ft/2700m. From there they will walk out through savannah and rain-forest to Mt. Meru, Africa ’s fifth highest peak at 14980ft/4566m. Finally, they will head onto the summit of the “white mountain” Mt. Kilimanjaro , which at 19340ft/5,895m is the highest peak in Africa and one of the Seven Summits.
They are doing this to raise money for both Sense and Acorns Children's Hospice.
They have paid for all the costs associated with this trek so each and every £ raised goes straight to the coffers of the charities concerned.
Please visit one of their website and help if you can
Alternatively, if you would rather not sponsor online, please contact Sonja via email sonjagraham590@btinternet.com with your full address (so they can claim gift aid) and the amount you would like to sponsor and to which charity, she can add you to their sponsor forms. Charity/CAF cheques are also very welcome.
However, this time it is going to be a much bigger challenge because it is 3 peaks in 2 weeks, Mt Longido (8850ft, 2700mts), Mt Meru (14980ft, 4566mts) and Kilimanjaro (19,340ft, 5895mts)!
This is a picture of them when they climbed Kilimanjaro in 2005.

So please help them to raise lots of money and make such a daunting challenge worthwhile!! |

Relay for Life
7th and 8th June 2008
Abbey Stadium, Birmingham Road
Redditch
Following my plea for support at the Area Challenge ‘Frog Racing’ night, I have been able to put together a Posse, ‘Pip’s Posse’ to be exact to enter into this year’s Relay for Life in Redditch, and I am proud to say with so many Circlers and Tablers supporting me, we will be flying the Area 4 flag and raising Circle profile as well as raising some money for Cancer Research UK.
For those who missed my pitch that night, Relay for Life is a 24 hour relay event to raise money to help Cancer Research UK continue its work into finding a cure for cancer. The significance of an event that continues through the night is to show that cancer never sleeps. The Relay starts at 12 o’ clock on Saturday 7th June and finishes at 12 noon Sunday 8th, during the 24hours at least 1 member of our team has to be ‘on the track’ at all times.
And my Posse is Jacqui Till, & Amanda Dunn (Bromsgrove), Leanne Day (Droitwich), Kayla Norman & Sharon Taylor (Colshill), Gail Ventress (Moseley), Lesley Titley(Moseley) Sam Cowley (Sutton), Tablers Mike Everard, Pete Norman, Geoff Stokes, Beci Gresham & Mark Bambury (Chippenham LC & Table) and Denise Stone (My Sis) Len Harvey (Sam’s Fella) and Rachel Stokes, oh and Me too!!
Please take a moment to sponsor us. It's really easy - you can donate online by credit or debit card at the following address: www.donatetomyrelay.org/pipeverard if you prefer to hand over cash please ask any of us who are taking part, we all have a good old fashioned sponsor form!
Many thanks
Together we can make a difference.
