What is a Doula?
"Doula" is a greek word that has come to be known as " a women experienced in childbirth who provides continous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth."
Partners and others are sometimes concerned that a doula will somehow replace them. They quickly findout, however, that the Doula helps to enrich the role of the partner by supporting them and helping them to participate at their own comfort level. The Doula provides experience, knowledge, guidance and in working with their care providers, helps to create fond birth memories. Current research has shown that women express greater satisfaction with their birth experience and an enhanced relationship with their partner when a Doula has been present.
What does a Doula do?
The Doula accompanies the women in labour, provides emotional and physical support, suggests comfort measures and provides support and suggestions to the partner as needed. Whenever possible the doula provides prenatal and postpartum emotional support, including education, information, and advocacy throughout the course of service.
The doula advocates for the clients wishes expressed in pre-natal conversations and intrapartum discussion. She helps the mother incorporate changes in plans if and when the need arises and enhances communication between client and caregivers. Clients and doulas recognize that the advocacy role does not include the doula speaking on behalf of the client or making decisions for the client. The advocacy role is best described as support, information, and mediation or negotiation if needed.
Statistics show women that are supported by a doula have:
50% reduction in ceserean rate
25% shorter labors
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in oxytocin use
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery
"The childbearing year is a time of physical and emotional power and challenge for women and those who love them. Women need reliable support and unpressured time to make their own best decisions about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting."
