Lot's of major actors star, ie. James Nam, Shih Szu, Ivy, Chang Yi, Ku Feng, Samo, James Tien...
Thoroughly enjoyed this one; very high level film!  A noble swordsman (Chang I) teams with a one-armed swordswoman (Ivy Ling Po) to go up against the vicious Crimson Charm gang. A classic tale of good versus evil in which the best man--and one-armed woman--wins. Overall, I give this film 4 out of 5 Stars.

This was a very good film to watch if you like a lot of fighting that features a lot of blood and gore.  This is one of my favorites.   Overall, I give this film 4.6 out of 5 Stars

This has to be Ti Lung's most underrated film.  I was very impressed with the quality of swordplay action that is featured in this film.   A definite must see if your a Ti Lung fan.  Overall, I give this film 4 out of 5 Stars

I first saw this film as a kid back in the late 1970s  when it was released in the US as "Invincible Kung Fu Brothers".  Definitely one of Fu Sheng's best roles.  A lot of gang style fighting in this film, typical of most Chang Cheh films.  Overall, I give this film 4.2 out of 5 Stars

To be frank, this movie put me to sleep, that is until the final battle scene.   This movie featured a lot of twists and turns that I really couldn't follow, especially when I was sleeping.  The final battle scene is the only scene to watch from this flick.  Overall, I give this film a 1.8 out of 5 Stars

Great action in this film, however, the plot really was hard to follow.  I have tried watching this movie 5 times, and each time I couldn't figure out what was going on.  Way too many things to keep track of.  Fight scenes are top notch and should be viewed by any kung fu fan, especially all you Shaw Bros fans.  Overall, I give this flick 2.5 out of 5 Stars

This is not a kung fu film, but rather an action/drama film (with little or no action except for what is seen in video clip 1 and 2.  Video clip 3) that was posted here upon the request of long time forum member SAN24.  Video clip 3 shows some of the drama that makes this film a solid production.  Overall, I give this flick 2.9 out of 5 Stars

Can you say "wake me up when the final battle scene starts"?  Its too bad the Shaws didn't make better use of the Venom crew in this film.  Only quality fight scene in this film was the final battle scene that featured all of the Venoms in peak form.   Definitely a must have for all you Shaw Bros fans.  Overall, I give this film 3 out of 5 Stars

This was the most plot intense movie out of all the 5 parts to this Brave Archer series.  You need to stay away from beer when watching this film as you won't be able to follow what's going on.  Overall, I give this film 2.9 out of 5 Stars (not much of any kung fu in this film for some reason)

A true Shaw Bros classic.  They should have stopped with Brave Archer, aka Kung Fu Warlords as this is the best out of all 5 Parts of the Brave Archer series.  Some top notch kung fu fights take place in this jewel from the Shaw Bros.  Overall, I give this film 4.3 out of 5 Stars

This was a fun movie with a Western feel (gee, I guess cuz of the name of the film reminds me of Have Gun, Will Travel).  Nonetheless, this is perhaps the film that defined who David Chiang would become (a Shaw Bros star).  A must see film of the swordplay genre.  Overall, I give this film 4.4 out of 5 Stars

A ferocious martial arts film, incredibly intense from start to finish (partly because everyone seems to have been directed to shout all their lines). Gordon Liu proves once again that he is "the man". Fantastic pole fighting scenes - defang the wolf!  This is a MUST have film for any Shaw Bros kung fu fan.  Overall, I give this film 5 out of 5 Stars

A really very focused film where I One of the weaker Chor Yuen wuxia films, dragged down by too many characters and a convoluted plot. Also by far the worst looking DVD Celestial have released.  I seriously doubt Chang Cheh had much real involvement. David Chiang again proves he is Da'Man of Shaw Bros kung fu / action films.   Like all of the Shaw's films, 'Vengeance' is ablaze with colour from the opening sequence of a Chinese Opera performance to the final blood splattered showdown. The use of colour here particularly gives the film a surreal edge and draws comparisons with the spectacle of Chinese Opera. Definitely an entertaining film to watch.  Overall, I give this film 3.8 out of 5 Stars

Click on images for large view

Clip 1: Click HERE to download this clip (approx. 136 MB)

With possibly the most confusing beginning to any kung fu movie I've ever seen, 'The Emperor and his Brother' feels like a sequel as it rushes through a series of fast cut sequences that set the backdrop to another typically involved Chor Yuan offering.  One of the weaker Chor Yuen wu xia films, dragged down by too many characters and a convoluted plot. Also by far the worst looking DVD Celestial has released. Overall, I give this film 2.5 out of 5 Stars

As with most wuxia films, the action is fantasy-based. The swordplay is very good, but the emphasis is on creative combat rather than kung fu or athletic ability.  Overall, I give this film 3.9 out of 5 Stars

The story is pretty basic kung fu comedy stuff, perhaps a little better than average. However, the film is enlivened significantly by the great fight choreography. Very fast, intricate and inventive. Hsiao Hao is a great acrobat and very likeable, and director Lau Kar Leung shows even more impressive skills.  Overall, I give this film 3.5 out of 5 Stars (I really hate comedy in my kung fu movies)

12/19/04   Death Duel (1 Video Clip)

Click on images for large view

Clip 1: Click HERE to download this clip (approx. 106 MB)

The thoughtful and intelligent story provides the framework for well choreographed and captivating action sequences. Beautifully shot, the fights, arranged by Tong Gaai, are fast moving affairs which make much of the skill of the actors and certainly do not feature the 'anyone can do' style of martial arts seen in earlier swordplay movies. Overall, I give this film 4.2 out of 5 Stars

12/19/04   Buddha's Palm (1 Video Clip)

Click on images for large view

Clip 1: Click HERE to download this clip (approx. 222 MB)

The volume of unusual names and circumstances can be overwhelming at times, but the story is relatively simple for a genre notorious for creating complex plots and sub-plots. You need only sit back and enjoy the unrelenting spectacle of comic violence that unfolds like a three-ring circus pressed into one box.  Perhaps too campy and unfocussed? Overall, I give this film 3 out of 5 Stars

Another Chor Yuen interpretation of a Gu Long story, with Fu Sheng taking the place typically reserved for Ti Lung as the lead - which is the film's weakness. Great (complex) story and stunning set designs and costumes, but Fu Sheng looks like a dick in his costume/wig and doesn't fit the character - or look too hot with a sword. Thankfully, there's Yueh Hua and Derek Yee to raise the bar, and the film generally goes much better when Fu Sheng isn't on screen.  I guess Ti Lung was on vacation or something...  Overall, I give this flick 2.4 out of 5 Stars

Latter-day Chang Cheh martial arts film with an intriguing plot and excellent fight scenes (as you'd expect with Kuo Chui as the lead). The first 5 minutes are hard to follow, but turn out to have next to no bearing on the rest of the film anyway - I guess they're backstory from a novel that gave the film it's name, since it's the only time "Royal Blood" gets a mention. Not too fond of Candy Wen - would have preferred a different lead actress, but such is life. Overall, I give this film 4.4 out of 5 Stars

12/12/04  Legendary Weapons of China (One Video Clip)

Click on images for large view

Clip 1: Click HERE to download this clip (approx. 120 MB)

Not much in the way of a story, but some absolutely incredible action scenes, featuring a wonderful mix of madcap spiritual boxing/magic boxer trickery and secret weapons, and some honest-to goodness physical virtuosity. The finale where the two Lau brothers go at each other with all the 18 titular weapons is... well, virtually unparalleled. Sadly, the Celestial DVD comes close to ruining the film with a totally botched audio remix.  Overall, I give this flick 4.5 out of 5 Stars

An above average storyline is bogged down a little by some slightly irritating characters and occasionally embarrassing costumes/wigs, but then entirely brought back up by the numerous fight scenes. The last 40 minutes is almost non-stop fighting, with exceptional choreography and skill from the performers - kung fu doesn't get much better than this.  Overall, I give this flick 3.9 out of 5 Stars (I hate comedy in my kung fu movies)

Another Chor Yuen/Gu Long/Ti Lung collaboration, this one enjoyably dark and down-beat. Production values luscious as always, with some simply gorgeous scenery. A bit less fantastic than some of Chor Yuen's sentimental swordsman films, which marks it down slightly, but still very enjoyable, though not one I'd pick to introduce somebody to the style of film.  Overall, I give this film 4 out of 5 Stars
