This is the BEST Shaw Bros movie that has been released to date by Celestial Pictures in my humble opinion. A CLASSIC in all aspects! Simply some amazing and jaw dropping action scenes are presented in this film, which for the first time since it was show on the big screen you can now see in Shawscope. This movie, prior to Celestial's release in 2005, could only be found in full frame and poor video bootleg quality. Seeing this film in Shawscope (i.e. WIDESCREEN) brings to life the utter stunning and amazing action. This is only one of a handful of films I given 5 out of 5 Stars. A definite MUST HAVE for any Shaw Brothers kung fu movie fan.

This movie was a real treat to watch. The movie featured more kung fu action than what I was expecting. I had read several bad reviews of this film on other web sites and message boards. However, I found this movie to be very entertaining, and the comedy that was presented was tolerable. Overall, I give this film 3.3 out of 5 Stars.

Another outstanding Chang Cheh directed film that features an outstanding Shaw Brothers cast! An unexpected surprise cameo by Carter Wong, yes, the one and only Carter Wong of the 18 Bronzemen series, plays the role of an assassin! Unfortunately his character is killed early in the movie. Also, it was nice seeing Gordon Liu in a villain role for once, and again with hair. Overall, I give this movie 4 out of 5 Stars.

Chang Cheh's first film, which in my opinion lacks substance, is so much fun to watch simply because if features tons of Shaw Bros stars. David Chiang steals the show with his incredible acting ability. If you have seen any Chang Cheh film, the plot will be familiar, but with the film ending a foregone conclusion, David Chiang brings life to the weak plot with his boyish grins and solid acting and swordplay skills. Overall, I give this movie 3.8 out of 5 stars.

This an adaptation of Jin Yong's "Sword Stained with Royal Blood", and features some good swordplay action. The titular Swift Sword is sheathed in an interesting snake-like scabbard and has a cobra head for a hilt. I found the plot to be too over-pakced with too many plot elements from the novel, which require long expository pauses in the action. There are even some foolish martial world reality scenes, like where a flying wheelchair appears. Overall, I will give this movie 3 out of 5 stars.

Based on the same Jin Yong novel as New Tales of the Flying Fox, but not quite as manically inventive, which means the story is better developed, but it did not leave me grinning as wildly. This is a Shaw Brothers supernatural comedy that features some kung fu action, but not much, yet should be enjoyable to those of you who are fans of Mr. Vampire type comdedy horror films of the past. A long-winded, but enjoyable Shaw Brothers kung fu romp. Once again, the Ching emperor is about to die, and all of his sons are scheming and fighting to ensure who is going to inherit the throne. Naturally, the nastiest of the bunch succeeds by stealing the imperial edict and altering it. However, in the process of obtaining the throne, the new emperor has made a lot of enemies and now they're all coming back for retribution. The kung fu is fast and furious in this film, and is a lot of fun to watch. Only in the last thirty minutes do things start to get silly with the introduction of some Japanese ninja and some silly ninja nonsense. One of them even has a boomerang shuriken that's about a foot in diameter. Overall, I give this movie 3.9 out of 5 Stars.

Reckoned to be one of the best Venoms films? Well, guess I'm not much of a Venoms fan. Rather generic Shaolin film, with rivalries between North and South Shaolin engineered by the court. Invincible Shaolin isn't the craziest or bloodiest Venoms film, but it gets by on solid martial arts performances from the leads, inventive training sequences, and great kung fu that culminates in a smashing finale. The interplay between the Venoms stars, both friend and foe, is a lot of fun to watch and has a strong feeling of camaraderie that is enhanced by their distinctive personas. Lots of training scenes and some good acrobatics in the fights, but... not all that interesting, and the leads lack the charisma of Gordon Liu, Ti Lung or Yueh Hua for instance. Kuo Chui and Chiang Shiang are the only venoms I can actually identify by sight in fact. Overall, I give this movie 3.2 out of 5 Stars

Based on the true events of the Boxer Rebellion, three best friends join the Boxers, a group of revolutionists to take on the government, who are now conspiring with foreign powers. The Boxers' leader, Li, is a man who wants a title in the government and to do so, he plans to have the Boxers take on the Japanese forces in an all out war. Many lives are shattered and destroyed all to save the reputation of China. But little do the Boxers know that Li is actually planning the Boxers to do his dirty work and ultimately, have them killed himself so he can gain a title. When the three best friend learn of the treachery, they must find a way to defeat Li before they become victims.
After using folk hero characters like Fong Sai-Yuk and Hung Sze-Kwan, Chang Cheh decided it was time to make a film based on true events that happened in the late 18th-early 20th century in China. The Boxer Rebellion was a story of how a group of revolutionists plotted to stop foreign powers from entering China, causing chaos. Chang Cheh brought that story the only way he knows how: take the story, twist it, and make it one hellacious battle after another with dramatic elements to it.
The film stars the late Alexander Fu Sheng, "copy king" Leung Kar-Yan, and Fu Sheng's partner-in-crime Chi Kuan-Chun as three friends who join the rebellion only to learn of treachery amongst the group. The battles are well choreographed by Lau Kar-Leung, especially that of the Boxers vs. the Japanese powers fight. Here, the Japanese stick to modern weaponry (the gun) against the Boxers and their kung fu and spears. The tracherous villain is played by a Shaw Brothers favorite, Wang Lung-Wei. Look for Richard Harrison as a German commander who is nearly a victim of the Boxers.
The Bottom Line: Bloody Avengers is a classic Cheng Cheh film, as he takes the true events of the Boxer Rebellion and twists it to make a worthy film of Shaw Brothers-caliber. I give this flick 5 out of 5 Stars

Liu Chia-liang's tour de force starring Gordon Liu and Yasuaki Kurata that pits Japanese and Chinese styles of martial arts against one another to settle a marital dispute. WAY better than it sounds! A masterpiece, my personal Shaw Brothers favorite, and possibly Gordon Liu's, Kurata's and Liu Chia Liang's greatest works. I love the story, the way in which martial arts are depicted without the good guy / bad guy dichotomy, and the ending is wholly satisfying. This is choreography and fighting of the very highest order and on few other occasions have Japanese martial arts been depicted so well by Chinese cinema. I give this movie 5 out of 5 Stars

It’s Kung Fu versus Judo in this blood-drenched Shaw Brothers release, an Old School hit often mentioned as one of the titles that helped shape the martial arts movies of the 1970s. Thinly plotted, shamelessly overacted, and mediocre in most areas, THE CHINESE BOXER is more notable for its overall importance to the genre than as disposable entertainment. Prior to this point, martial arts films tended to be quite tame, with fighting rooted largely in Peking Opera artifice. With this picture, Jimmy Wang Yu (who also directed, with assistance from Ng See-yuen and Yang Ching-chen) helped established some of the key elements that would define Chinese martial arts movies in the years to come. The exaggerated, yet practically threadbare "Honorable Chinese vs Murderous Japanese Dogs" premise barely provides a framework for the story, but Wang would recycle it several times in later years. Despite this flagrantly one-dimensional depiction of the Japanese, Wang was clearly influenced to a great degree by the country’s cinema, as displayed by his movies’ cinematography, settings, costumes, and battle sequences. The tremendous amount of bloodshed here is another obvious nod to chambara cinema, which often presents such graphic violence with great artistry and effect. Unfortunately, the graceless vomiting and spewing of blood by numerous characters here is so overdone as to inspire laughter. Overall, THE CHINESE BOXER has rewards for those interesting in tracing the origins of Old School kung fu movies, but its debits are considerable enough to recommend it only to that audience. I give this classic kung fu flick 3 out of 5 stars

A film about some guys trying to cross a bridge, and an incompetent sound engineer banging various kitchen implements together. At least, that's how it seems after Celestial's utterly terrible sound remix that destroys the fight scenes - which are about half the film. With the original sound mix it's probably a decent story of heroic rebels in the same vein as The Water Margin or Heroic Ones, with totally shallow plot and characters, and outrageous acts of manly gallantry and bleeding - i.e. typical Chang Cheh for the time. Overall I give this flick 3 out of 5 stars.

Although it was early days as far as modern fight choreography is concerned, the battle scenes still remain impressive and you just have to consider that this film was made in 1970. In fact the film features some terrific battles in which gallons of fake blood must have been used. And speaking of gore, the film features one of the most gruesome demises for a lead character that I've ever seen in a martial arts film. Overall I give this flick 4 out of 5 stars.

Filled with action the fight scenes display just as much originality as other elements from the film. Ti Lung carries the 'magic blade' of the title, which can spin round on its handle and has a cool sound effect to boot, but there are also many other interesting and exotic weapons on display. The fights are all wonderfully choreographed, filmed and edited especially the fantastic finale which sees Ti Lung take on Yu's top fighters all together. This was the very last movie the Venoms ever appeared in together for Shaw Bros studios, minus Lo Meng who was not in it. The action in the film is largely reserved for the last half hour or so and its Lau Kar Leung himself that takes centre stage, with some excellent kung fu displays in another superb fight with Wang Lung Wei. Gordon Liu, Fu Sheng, Wong Yu, Hsiao Hou and Hui Ying Hung all get their allotted screen time (which would be enough to make this film a must see anyway) but its the comedy that ruins this film. Chang Cheh and Jimmy Wang Yu's follow up to THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN is nearly as impressive, with an excellent script and superb production/direction. The film has a very classical feel to it, an epic full of melodrama and passions, and some great dialogue (with better than average subtitles, thankfully). Celestial have done their best to ruin the film with new sound effects and awful music on the dvd, but mainly in the first half for some reason - the end seems largely untouched.
