The Essay The year 2000. The new millennium. I and my wife marked the occasion by doing what comes naturally to people of our age. I'm sure I needn't go into all the details. As soon as June had arrived, we abandoned our shyness, went up to the spare bedroom in the attic and indulged ourselves for the first time ever. The future was now. We surfed into the internet. And what a wide weird wired dotcom world we found. At the press of a button, and after a bit of a wait for the connection, much of humanity began to reach out to us through the laptop. Our own name, Dykes, called up many interesting pages. And the communications I've been honoured to receive since almost defy belief. I have discovered that I'm famous, particularly in parts of western Africa. My first inkling of this came with the receipt of an e-mail from no less a person than Dr George Akin. Dr Akin is the Director and Funds Co-ordinator of the Finance/Contract Department of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, based in Lagos, Nigeria. In July he kindly informed me, "this ministry is now compiling beneficiaries to be paid this first quarter of 2000", and very punctual too. He and his colleagues had uncovered certain accounting irregularities, and had tracked down US$41.5M to the Apex Bank, which they thought best to transfer abroad Touchingly, they wondered whether they could store the money on my bank account, and offered me 25%. They also sought to rely on my advice as regards investments in blue chip companies in my country. Three months later, I was entrusted with a confidential communication from Togo. A family, originally from Sierra Leone, had been left without a father; an unnamed victim of war. His illiterate, but mathematically gifted wife had virtually nothing left with which to feed her children, other than a few trinkets stored in a vault in Lome. She estimated them to be worth hardly more than US$250 million. Her good friend, Mr Jika Abdulkarim informed me of this horror. He sought an honest person to assist in his efforts to help. My reward would be handsome. A message arrived in December from the desk of Dr Sherrif Musa. This capable piece of furniture supports the work of "THE PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTANT TO NIGERIAN NATIONAL PETROLEUM CORPORATION (NNPC)." Its keyboard skills are impressive. Most tables can't type at all, and its inability to use lower case letters is a trivial matter. Dr Musa's desk went on to report its membership of a "FIVE MEN COMMITTEE....TO VERIFY AND INVESTIGATE CONTRACTUAL PAYMENTS OF THE MINISTRY." These diligent souls discovered US$14.5 million "FLOATING IN A SUSPENSE ACCOUNT", which sounds interesting but is apparently not unprecedented in Lagos. In its own words, "WE DISCOVERED MORE SEVENTY-TWO SIMILAR CASES BUT WERE RECOVERED TO THE GOVERNMENT CONFER." My name was recommended to the desk by Ms Regina Huchmutt, the Paraguayan lady who works at the World Information Technology Institute. I don't wish to offend furnishings furnishing business opportunities, but I can't help thinking three million for my services is a bit low. Christmas came and New Year went, so it was nice to be reminded of the season of good will by the cheery greetings from Usman Bello, received on January 9th. Mr Bello, I hardly need say, is the Chief Auditor of the Review/Audit. Surprisingly, his committee have "uncovered a floating amount of $50.5 USD in a deliberate act of over-invoicing". I assume he means millions. This would appear to happen daily in Lagos, where my good friend Usman also lives. Perhaps he should get in touch with Dr George and Sherrif's desk. Two days later, I received more sad tidings from Togo. I was informed by his first son, Dr Victor, that CJ Sankou had been killed during the fighting in Sierra Leone. Whilst in government, CJ had secured US$20.5 million, which he kept in a metal trunk in the vaults of his villa. I never knew villas in Sierra Leone had vaults. Before his death, he gave everything to Dr Victor for safe keeping. This was shortly after CJ's mother "died as a result of heart attack when she was carrying a 6 months pregnancy," something many pensioners would find hard to cope with. Having lost their father, grandmother and unborn uncle or aunt, you would have thought this family had suffered enough, but unfortunately life can be cruel. "Now we are on exile here in Togo since after the coup, we are suffering here in Togo. We are Subjected to severe hard conditions, please sir help us in the name of God almighty the most merciful and most gracious." My heart goes out to Dr Victor and surviving family members. Stuck in Togo with nothing other than a mobile telephone, a computer, 20.5 million dollars and a good friend who works at the Ministry of Chambers of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture, who gave him my name. He also had the decency to offer 30%. On January 15th, Dr James Osondu, of Eco Bank of Africa, told me about one of his customers. A plane had crashed in November 1997, and the poor man and his entire family were killed. "We have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim hismoney," (unlikely in the circumstances). "But unfortunately," he continues, "his supposed nextof kin or elation died along side with him." That his elation should have perished suprises me not. In Togo, the banking law "erestipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after five years," (it would) "be transfered into the Bank treasury as unclaimed fund." Dr James asks me to be that nextof kin, also for 30%. He received my details "through one lady who works with togo chember of commerce", which might indicate a contact of Regina Huchmutt's. It was eleven days later when the e-mail from Iky Nobis arrived, The Chairman, Contract Awardind Committee of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He'd found my information in a directory from the Togolaise Chamber of Commerce and Industries, where I appear to be a household name. Iky asks me to forgive his indignation, should his message be a surprise. He has no reason to be indignant. All his colleagues were impressed with my profile, which is nice to know. This explains why they wish to place US$10 milion into my personal or company's bank account, money accrued from the ECOMOG intervention in Sierra Leone and Liberia. "This DEAL was deliberately hatched out and carefully protected with all the attendant lope holes sealed off." Their belief "in the non-stable and sporous political nature of this sub-region," could not fairly be called groundless. But I'm not sure that, for only 15%, I'm prepared to accord my unalloyed and due co-operation as asked. Nevertheless, I shall leave the last words to Mr Iky Nobis. You're obviously some kind of sexual pervert. I'm forwarding your obscene message to the police. Thanks to the location information in the headers, their colleagues locally will doubtlessly be picking you up, you obnoxious child molester. A bit of copy-pasting and a word counter reveals he sent this confidential message to me and 4,040 other people simultaneously. He's the illiterate, Liverpool-based personal attorney of Ms Casey Johnson, a resident of the Merseyside district of California on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Oh, and then carry on across the rest of the colonial continent, but mind out for carelessness on the roads. 19.1.2010: Reverend Smith Johnson the banker enquires: "Finally, you are hereby advised to indicate to this honorable office with immediate effect, if you are the person that instructed Mr. John Lenon to come for the claim of these funds, to enable me endorse for the final payment approval order on his behalf." We'll let it be, Rev Joh. 21.1.2010: One of the Dr John Ezes has made an unusual discovery in Benin. He informs me the city of Pehnom Penh has now taken up residence there. Doubtlessly, puzzled looks must be expected in its former home of Cambodia. 22.1.2010: Pfarrer Wilhelm Olschewski German-speaking readers may be receiving heartfelt appeals to help the Hiatian humanitarian efforts of Hoffnungszeichen eV, and these are sent to Liebe Mitchristen ! I received one via an obsolete e-mail address that I haven't used for nearly ten years. Furthermore, I'm not a Christian. This is extremely spammy, and that's despite the plausible looking homepage of the aforementioned organisation (should it be more than a bank account). Competent charities and organisations don't send out random spam. (The FDP sent me some during the last election, but I'm talking about competent groups.) An appropriate response to Freund Olschewski's spam is to forward a donation to a reputable charity, and not a spammer version. The e-mail I received carried the Betreff: HAITI: Schnelle Erdbebenhilfe durch Hoffnungszeichen e.V.. There may well be other versions doing the rounds. 26.1.2010: Dr John Powel, who informs me I've won a loterry, reports: "WORLD BANK AUDITORS SITTING PRUDENTLY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM PRIME FINANCIAL INSTITUTION" I think it's some form of Occidental-Buddhist poem. 27.1.2010: From her latest work, 'My happiness is that I lived a life worthy of emulation', comes: "Am sarah Adelfa from Greece, married to Engineer Welsh Coleman who is late." 12.2.2010: "...so I have decided to give arms to charity organizations..." 23.2.2010: UNICEF FUND RASING(HAITI DISASTER)" Donate to Haiti Earthquake Children's Appeal A devastating earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale has struck Haiti causing an unfolding humanitarian crisis. Children have been killed and injured ? many are in desperate need of clean water, shelter and medical help..." The English is better than the usual standards of Foff scammers, but that's because the text has been largely copy-pasted from the internet, and then used in the normal manner in an attempt to relieve you of your money. Don't make scammers richer. Send donations to genuine charities instead; ones that don't use e-mail spamming. 18.3.2010: With apologies in advance to those of delicate sensibilities for several of the following featured addresses. I am but the messenger. I understand that "totally bottle gas" explosions can be very soundly indeed. Mum died too as the resident house burnt down. 27.5.2010: This year's Stupid Name Contest may well have just been won by Mr Pepple Spiff. 7.9.2010: "My experience and challenges serving under the U.S Army in Iraq, makes me feel Diver-stated, but I am very optimistic that I will not die in the battle, by the special grace of God." 15.10.2010: "I am Alex Volkan, a naturalized Briton by birth and a business merchant based Netherlands." 19.11.2010: Perhaps inspired by a James Joyce-esque stream of consciousness, Mrs Arshard Roshanda has forwarded the first paragraph of what could turn into a very long novel. "I am drenched with tears while writing this short message to you. It was heartbreaking news to me few days ago when my doctor notified me on complications on my health condition which he officially made known to me. He further stressed that the complication I had in my human mechanism as a result of a secondary liver cancer which have destroyed all the organs in my body system. According to him, he said that this complication will lead to my imminent death since no medication can alleviate the high system of deformation I am encountering at this time in my system." Oh, she wishes to forward $3.5 million, and may be in urgent need of a family pack of paper hankies.

2011

26.2.2011: "I am writing to notify you of the unclaimed inheritance deposit of our late client, Mr. MROTZEK GERD who passed on to the Great beyond onAugust 21st, 2008 in the Spanair Flight JK-502 2 Crash in Madrid." 2.3.2011: A philosophical mathematician writes: "I am writing you this letter because cool penny is better than million of dollars." For some, pleasure comes cheap. 5.3.2011: "Sometimes a person will open a bank account, deposit money, and then disappear into the tin air." 9.3.2011: Presenting the 'Fucking Scammers' scammer. "... You will agree with me that experience is the best teacher as we say. I have had a lot of bad and hurtful experiences from those Fucking Internet Scammers. I received over 50 mail each day telling me to claim my inheritance Funds worth Eight Hundred and Fifty Thousand United Stated Dollars. I fell to this trap and I lost a lot of money. I will never forgive those Bastards from Africa to be specific Nigeria." Anyway, Mary Wells saw my e-mail address on popping into the Federal High Court, from whence she was redirected to the Real Organization, and they gave her so much money that she's now decided to retire from work! All I need do is to contact Barrister Fred Moore, a Federal High Court Official at the Federal High Court of Justice in the utterly unfederal United Kingdom, and he'll make me as rich as Wells as well. 29.3.2011: "i want you to stand as the bona-fide next of kin to the disease." 31.3.2011: Mrs Pauline Douglas reports a mishap for husband Kovo. "During the intervention of the ECOLOGY Soldiers to Restore the presidency of Alhaji Tejan KABBAH from Johnny Koroma, my husband was among the 23 executed Ministers." Happily, no animals or plants were harmed in any way during these events. 7.4.2011: The latest work of the exciting German language author, David Dafana, qualifies as different. "Grosse grussen auf dir targe, Ich hoffe dise mail ist zu dier gekomen fur gute, ich wais mein mail ist ein uberasion zu dier wail wie ken anander nich, und hab noch nich was zuzamen gehmak, abar ich bitte dich mit mier ein vorschtanden wail ich hab was gutes fur euch mit gute hert, ich bin David Dafana fum Ivory Coast dir ein ziege son fum geschtoben herr /frau Benson Dafana ich wurnsche zu arbeit mit dier wail ich broch dein hilffe fur..." Readers unfamiliar with the German language may well be wondering what on Earth that's supposed to mean. Those who speak German may be left thinking much the same! Seemingly, Dafana thinks either I or himself, for example, is a "ziege son" (the son of a goat?), and is uncertain as to whether his deadling fafer was a men or a women. Marq de Sade VI, my secretary, has had the full message analysed by a committee of Germanistic experts. They reached the conclusion that the author must have learned his German in the streets and pubs of Vienna.
