What puts youth at risk: a national study

For three months, my job was to coordinate a team of survey administrators for a CDC study in all San Francisco public middle schools. I also surveyed a lot of kids.

Here's what we found: Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey Findings

About the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and US Department of Health and Human Services conducted a study of risk behavior in American students across all grade levels. The aim was to identify priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States.

The aim of the research was to find out how many and how often kids are:

  • smoking, drinking or using drugs.
  • having sex.
  • eating badly or dieting heavily.
  • not getting enough exercise.
  • learning about sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection.
  • doing things that lead to injuries or violence.
