Krabi has become a very popular destination and can now offer a large range of accommodation. It started as a remote place, mainly addressing to backpackers.
Today, there is a choice for everyone. Some very exclusive resorts appeared all along the several beaches of Krabi, but all had a great respect of the environment. Therefore, you won't see large constructions defigurating the seafront, but an elegant blend of design and comfort within the natural beauty of the coastline.
Mainly, whether you arrive by road or by plane, you will discover 3 main beaches accessible by road. The most popular one is Ao Nang Beach where most of the shopping and the nightlife happens. Nearby is Nopparat Beach, kind of quiet... but offers nice view on limestone formations accessible by walk at low tide.
Ao Nang is the best known beach in Krabi. You'll find everything you will need to spend a good holiday, or at least, it will be an excellent starting point to discover the surrounding islands and beaches. Much smaller than Phuket or even Koh Samui, it still offers a large range of restaurants, bars, shops, travel agents ready to take you almost anywhere, and a bit of "Hot Night Spots" with loud music and activities for the night owl. (But nothing to compare with Phuket Nightlife).
The beach itself is not exactly the best swimming spot because of the many longtail boats parked all along, but it is still a nice walk. At the end of the day, don't miss the chance to have a beer or a cocktail at the last fisherman bar (walk all the way north to the huge limestone), or try the excellent seafood on the terraces on the south end.
And there is Railey Beach... a glimpse of heaven on earth. Only accessible by boat, it remains almost unspoilt despite of the many hotels, bungalows, restaurants, bars and convenience stores built around the 3 main beaches. But today the balance is still right as too wild can be boring. Take an early morning longtail boat from Ao Nang Beach if you plan to stay only for a day. (price is fixed : 50 Baht per person). Or ride anytime, even late at night if you stay there overnight. There is plenty to discover on the beaches, caves, rock climbing, walk along the cliffs, shopping in the caves (yes), party at night on the beach. Once in a lifetime experience....
Less known, but definitely worth a visit, these two beaches feature three of the most luxurious resorts in Krabi, as well as some more modest villas or even bungalows. With a view on the "Hong Islands", it is a more relaxing landscape and a perfect hideaway for a romance. If driving, you will have the pleasure to discover the huge limestones fringing both sides of the road with their intricated trees and roots hidden hundred of caves.
