History of Kombucha? The first recorded use of Kombucha Tea or tonic also referred to as "Manchurian Mushroom Tea" was in the year 221 B.C. during the Tsin-Dynasy of the Chinese empire. It was at this time that Kombucha Tea was referred to as the "Divine Tsche" or "The Remedy for Immortality".
Kombucha tea resurfaced in Japan at which time a Japanese visitor to Kargasok found many people to be not only unusually healthy but over a
hundred years old (several were reported to be 110-130 years of age). The women were virtually unwrinkled, with few other visible signs of ageing. She was told the Kargasoks, young and old, drank a yeast enzyme tea daily and had done so for generations. It was claimed the tea was responsible for their health and longevity, She was given a kombucha mushroom, with instructions, to take home. She shared its use with friends, who apparently reported after some weeks, marked differences in physical well being. Reports included pronounced lowering of high blood pressure, fading of wrinkles and gradual beginnings of hair restoration.
In 414 A.D. Dr Kombu from Korea brought the remedy to Japan to treat the Japanese emporer Inkyo. The success of this treatment led to the teas rapid popularity. Use of the fermented tea spread to Russia, India and throughout Europe.
In the early 1950's , Soviet scientists and cancer researchers tried to determine the cause of the drastic increase in cancer following World War II. A team of investigators were sent to two districts in the region of Perm on the Kama river of the Ural mountains. They were investigating why the residents of these areas had almost no occurences of cancer.
The initial investigations yielded no results that could explain this phenomenon. Both areas were noted for their contaminated conditions. The soil and water in these areas were heavily contaminated with lead, mercury and asbestos, all known to cause or contribute to cancer in humans. All aspects of the residents lives were examined including work, lifestyle and diet. The residents of these areas were known for the heavy drinking and smoking that predominated these communities.
When the investigators were about to give up in frustration because they could not find the reason for the lack of cancer, one of the residents offered an investigator a drink while they chatted. The drink was called "Tea Kvass" or roughly translated "Tea Wine". When the investigators went back and rechecked the residents and their homes they discovered that almost every household had a crock pot with fermenting Kombucha Tea or Tea Kvass. They had finally found the explanation for the low cancer rates (much to their relief). This conclusion is now supported by modern science
What is it?
The Kombucha mushroom is not really a mushroom, or even related to mushrooms, in reality it is a symbiotic relationship between a number of bacteria (beneficial) and special yeast cultures. The symbiotic nature of the bacteria and yeast ferments sweetened tea to become kombucha tea, a refreshing, naturally carbonated beverage used for over two thousand years as a refreshing beverage as well as a beneficial tonic.
