"Kokiri Civil War"

Peace was finally a word that could be used in the present. After constant warring and sacrifice, there was peace across all of Hyrule, Ordon, Arorindu, Labrynna, and Holodrum. A number of magicians, like scientists except for magic, began to create numerous great theories. They made a vast number of magical achievements, not the least of which was the discovery of other realms like the Sacred Realm, Light and Time, which were the Twilight Realm, Twilight and Shadow, and the Upper Wood, Forest and Air.

From the essence of the Sacred Realm, the Ocarina of Time was made. From the essence of the Twilight Realm, the Mirror of Twilight was made. From the essence of the Upper Wood, the Ring of the Kokiri was made. These three objects were more powerful than any mortal or immortal realized at first. A Kokiri Boss, Hiran, took the Ring of the Kokiri for himself and made himself King of the Kokiri.

Makaran Treehopper the Vine Kokiri had already left Erin and me. Erin Treehopper the Wood Kokiri gathered the Wood Kokiri, I, Joshua Treehopper the Leaf Kokiri, gather the Leaf Kokiri, and Juniper Treesitter the Snow Boss Kokiri gathered the Snow Kokiri. Together, we faced Hiran and the Vine, Cloud, Seed, and Healing Kokiri. The few tribes out of the war were simply so isolated that neither side made an effort to gain them.

Erin and I were more like rallying flags than leaders, so Juniper took command of the entire “Rebel Army”, as we were called so often. The Forest and Air Sages of that time tried to maintain neutrality, but it was impossible. The corrupt King Hiran managed to win them both over and, with their help, nearly ended us on several occasions.

I took a bold and stupid, yet necessary, risk. I attacked the king directly after seven hours of playing Hide and Seek with the four or five hundred guards.
“Joshua Treehopper, the Idiot of Leaves, glad you came. Now, I can acquire the Kokiri Emerald and then I can finish this uprising!”

“Hiran, you little, arrogant, bossy, corrupt twit,” Jordan insulted, “we’re taking you down.”

“Hiran, this is the end for you. The Kokiri should never have a king; it’s not right.”

“What’s not right,” his pink fairy Haru began, “is that you would defy us.”

“You stupid healing fairy wannabe,” Jordan insulted.

I drew my Kokiri Sword as I cast, “Kokiri Magic- Leaf Shield!” The Kokiri Sword was a broadsword with a red jewel in the center of the guard which rose up to the blade in a u-shape. The guard and hilt were made of red-hued Spellwood, a Kokiri specialty which rivaled iron. The blade was made of Mithril and had a full moon aura while in my care. Its sheathe was Spellwood with a blue-dyed tip. Both my sheathe and the sword itself were made for me by the Picori. The Leaf Shield was a summoned oval shield with a leaf pattern like that of scales on it and was about the length from my elbow to just beyond my fingertips’ reach. Three arm straps of magically strengthened leather ensured it would not fall off, because that would be embarrassing. The Kokiri Emerald tied around my neck by a Mithril chain was slightly.

The Air and Forest Sages suddenly came in on either side of Hiran. “Defeat him.”

The Air Sage channeled his magic through his violin to send me flying against the wall in the rectangular throne room.  The Forest Sage channeled her magic through her ocarina to send thorns at me while a thick fog surrounded me and vines rushed out from the wall to pin me there.

Jordan flew away just in time.
Hang in there, I’ll be back!
Get back before I die, okay?

Two minutes later, I heard a girl cast, “Kokiri Magic- Wood Wall!!!

Another girl cast, “Kokiri Magic- Avalanche!!!

The fog and vines were still in place, but at least the thorns and gales weren’t coming any more. “Thanks, I was getting blasted.”

“We saw,” Erin’s voice taunted, “However, you didn’t, apparently; why do you do everything yourself?”

“I didn’t expect to face all three at once; Kokiri Emerald Magic- Kokiri Magic Drain!!” The Kokiri Emerald absorbed the fog and vines and I returned to the ground from the wall.
Jordan, we got some help, but hurry.
I’m on my way back, hang on a little longer.

I upgrade cast, “Kokiri Magic- Leaf Claw!!” Three half-foot long claws extended from my Leaf Shield in the same leaf pattern that was on my shield. The king stepped forward. “I’ll take Hiran.”

Erin immediately declared, “Then the Forest Sage is mine.”

Juniper sighed and unenthusiastically said, “Then the Air Sage is mine, I guess.”

Hiran clenched his right hand, which had the Ring of the Kokiri on, aimed at me, and cast, “Ring of the Kokiri Magic- Full Charge!!!!

I, as he did that, pointed my Kokiri Sword and Leaf Claw at my Kokiri Emerald and cast, “Kokiri Emerald Magic- Full Charge!!!!
Two beams of magic fired at each other, a bright green from my emerald and a golden one from Miran’s ring. At the point of contact, an energy sphere began to build up.

Erin cast, “Kokiri Magic- Spellwood Dual Hammers!!!” This summoning spell conjured two war hammers made of red-hued Spellwood. The Forest Sage clashed with a Spellwood Staff.

Juniper cast, “Kokiri Magic- Dual Frost Axes!!!” This summoning spell conjured two battle axes with the hilts and other wood parts made of Spellwood, the metal axe heads were made of Mithril. The Air Sage clashed with two Mithril Scimitars.

This combat dragged on for what seemed like years, but was actually just a couple of minutes. Finally, my last magic reserves began to fail. Hiran’s magic began to push my beam back. He laughed as this happened, until suddenly, something interesting happened. “Wolf Magic- Moonlit Claw Crush!!!” Oromis, who was technically my uncle and a gold-furred wolf with one bright red eye, his right one, was a deity who represented the moon. He crashed into Hiran, disrupting his attack. He continued towards the Air Sage and then the Forest Sage. “Did I arrive in time?”

“Yeah, did we arrive in time?” Jordan asked from on his head.

“I’d have to say you both did. Jordan, suit up. This battle’s not over by a long shot.”

Jordan flew into a Magic Sack at Oromis’ side and came out moments later about my height with a wooden hammer and a triangular hat on. “How do I look?”

“Like a Kokiri,” Oromis stated. “But let’s focus on the task at hand.” We faced the King and the Sages. “You are outnumbered, surrender.”

“You must be Oromis, the Deity of the Moon, well, it does not matter. You’re all too late! So long as I am in the Upper Wood, this ring will provide me with all the magic I need!!” He shot his clenched fist high into the air and laughed maniacally.

“So, that’s it? You believe we have no chance of beating you? Well, in that case,” I aimed my Kokiri Sword at him, “I’ll have to crush your belief and save the Upper Wood.”

Hiran’s ring transformed into a broadsword, “You dare defy your king? Oh, right, you’re a rebel. Well, I’ll smite you, wretched rebel!” He rushed at me. The Air Sage rushed at Juniper and Jordan. The Forest Sage rushed at Erin and Oromis.

The sounds of battle echoed throughout the Upper Wood as the whole castle began to shake. The guards fled for what they feared were their lives. The magicians and civilians of the Upper Wood fled, all but the natives. The natives were Ents, who looked like talking, walking trees but got angry if you called them that, and the Dryads, who looked like smaller talking, walking trees and tended to be more shamanistic than the Ents.

The natives took this as their chance to rid their realm of the corrupt Kokiri forever. They besieged the defenderless castle, causing more panic and mayhem. But still we fought. We fought until the last possible moment, Jordan, Oromis and I fought until we couldn’t fight anymore, and then we fought some more. Juniper and Erin returned to Hyrule to find that the Kokiri there had been rounded up and captured by the rebelling armies.

Suddenly, a golden light blasted me. I heard a heavenly woman’s voice, “Joshua, my child, take this gift.”

A golden light blasted Oromis. He heard a brutish man’s voice, “Oromis, my child, take this gift.”

A final golden light blasted Jordan. He heard an elderly and wise voice, “Jordan, my child, take this gift.”

I felt the Triforce of Courage and looked on the back of my right hand to see its symbol shining brightly there. Oromis felt the Triforce of Power and could see it on the back of his right paw. Jordan felt the Triforce of Wisdom and could see it on the back of his right hand.

I returned my Leaf Claw into myself and cast, “Fusion of Kokiri Emerald and Triforce of Courage!!” The Kokiri Emerald flowed into my hand and appeared over the Triforce symbol, “Kokiri’s Triforce of Emerald Courage!!!! This time, there will be no escape for you!!” I charged at Hiran, he charged at me, and our blades clashed. The sword he held reverted into the Ring of the Kokiri and his body erupted in a blaze of golden fire. The ring fell on the floor. The Ents and Dryads stopped their attacks.

Oromis attacked the Forest Sage with, “Wolf Magic- Powerful Moonlit Claw Crush!!!!

Jordan attacked the Air Sage with, “Picori Magic- Wise Gale of the Heavens!!!!

The Forest and Air Sages were blasted backwards so far they fell through the portal leading back to the Forest Temple. As soon as that happened, a gold dragon with black eyes and black claws rose from out of the Ring of the Kokiri. “I will make you pay!!!” He flew out of the throne room of the ruined castle into the sky and unleashed a roar.

“Oromis, Jordan, let’s finish Hiran once and for all; Kokiri Magic- Leaf Wings!!” Two wings made of magic and which made me look like an angel with wings made of leaves sprouted from my shoulder blades. Oromis and Jordan nodded. The three of us took to the skies and attacked Hiran the corrupt dragon.
Our bodies were already tired, the Ents and Dryads could tell as we were all slammed down by a single tail whip from Hiran. The Ents raised our bodies to the skies. The Dryads began to drone, which is a deep, constant hum. Magic flowed into our beaten, battered bodies. Our eyes opened wide with the flow of energy. A voice echoed from Hyrule, “Take these Spiritual Stones!!” The Arori Ruby and Oocca Sapphire, currently known as the Goron’s Ruby and Zora’s Sapphire, flew out of the closing portal to Oromis and Jordan respectively.

Oromis cast, “Fusion of Arori Ruby and Triforce of Power!!” The Arori Ruby shot into his hand and appeared over the Triforce symbol, “Arori’s Triforce of Ruby Power!!!! Hiran, we end this now!!”

Jordan cast, “Fusion of Oocca Sapphire and Triforce of Wisdom!!” The Oocca Sapphire shot into his hand and appeared over the Triforce symbol, “Oocca’s Triforce of Sapphire Wisdom!!!! Hiran, we’re taking you down!!”

“Thank you, forest folk.” The Ents and Dryads smiled softly at my acceptance of them.

Oromis, Jordan, and I shot up into the sky like three comets, complete with tails. Hiran tried to claw us and tail whip us, but we were too fast. We formed a triangle formation around him. Oromis was to the north, Jordan was to the southwest, and I was to the southeast. We combined cast, “Spiritual Triforce Magic- Triangulated Crash Attack!!!!” We all rushed inwards and smashed Hiran right in the chest and emerged on the sides opposite where we’d started, turned around, and went through again. Hiran exploded.

An Ent called up, “The portal is closing!! Hurry out!!” The Dryads came together near the portal and channeled what was left of their magic into it. The energies of the Spiritual Stones of Fire and Water, the Arori Ruby and Oocca Sapphire, returned to Hyrule and the Kokiri Emerald returned to its position around my neck. The Triforce returned to from whence it came. In the commotion, nobody realized the Ring of the Kokiri flash a few times and fire itself into the Kokiri Shrine of the Castle of the Kokiri, which still stood tall. As we neared the portal, the Minish Cap, the green triangular hat Jordan was wearing, shrunk and shot into the Picori Shrine. Jordan turned to get it. “There is no time, hurry out!!” Jordan nodded and followed Oromis and I out the portal just an instant before it closed.

We realized then that the Forest and Air Sages had come to their senses and were also assisting in keeping the portal open. With that victory, I reached into a blank book and cast one of the earliest Rune Spells, “Rune Magic- Triple Key Seal!!!” The keys to open the portal back to the Castle of the Kokiri, and just as importantly, the Castle of the Kokiri, will be revealed to you at a later time.

Finally, the worst conflict the Kokiri had faced up until that point was over and peace returned to our forests. Time passed, more wars occurred, but that is the fate of all kingdoms. We have wars, we have peace, we die, we return.

"Forest Desert War"

Twenty-one years earlier, the Kokair had installed a second village in the northwest region of the forest, which evidently provoked the Gerudo’s South Oasis Fort. They worried the Kokair were going to turn the oasis into a south-flowing river to provide the Kokair with more water for the forest. The Gerudo sent a messenger, unarmed, who declared the Gerudo would enter a defensive war if necessary to protect their oasis’ water. The Boss of the northwest Kokair Village took it as an insult and had her imprisoned. Word quickly spread to even me and I told Saria, the Forest Sage Kokiri. She told Nabooru, the Spirit Sage Gerudo. Nabooru told the Gerudo leader and a war for honor began.

Cilia joined the war within the first week, but I kept out of it with bitter memories of what war was like. After three weeks, I accepted a role as a simple medic on the battle front. I saved both Kokair and Gerudo, much to the confusion of both sides. When questioned by a Gerudo as to why I saved both sides from death, I replied, “Doctors know nothing about which side to save.” I had heard that ages ago from an Arori doctor and tried to apply it to every aspect of my life.

Cilia’s little sister, Helen Kytail, was actually very close to another Kokair. This Kokair joined the war and was presumably killed after four months, but I wasn’t entirely certain when I told Helen the news the morning I returned. She took the news so hard that she isolated herself from everyone and everything for a week. Then, I received word that Cilia had been captured and my instinct told me to hunt down Helen, which I did. When I told her what had happened, she pulled herself together and we tried to convince other Kokair to save Cilia, but none were willing.

That afternoon, I handed Helen a Magic Sack and a broadsword with an onyx in the hilt and personally carried two Magic Sacks tied to my belt, my Fairy Bow and Kokiri Sword on my back, and lead Helen to the north… to Cilia. Helen and her purple fairy, Melina, followed a short distance behind Jordan, my green fairy, and I. We walked directly through a Gerudo camp and sat down in the center. The Gerudo stared at us and Helen glanced about nervously.

“You have a friend of ours captive,” I declared. “I request you release her.” Plan A is under way.

An eight and a half foot tall Gerudo came out of a tent and stood in front of us. She looked to be in her early thirties. She had very broad shoulders and her crimson hair flowed to her waist. Her golden eyes glared down on Helen in particular first and her tanned skin held an aura of the sun itself in it. Silver earrings were in both ears and her clothes were a white sleeveless shirt and brown baggy pants with blue shoes and a violet veil which covered the lower half of her face.

“Consider your request denied, Kokair,” she spat hatefully, shifting her gaze to me.

“Five thousand Rupees say it will be fulfilled,” I said calmly. Jordan flinches noticeably from on my left shoulder and Helen adopted a dumbfounded look. All but one set of Gerudo eyes turned to my sacks with pure avarice, or greed.

“Leave,” she commanded.

“I have saved many of your people at some point or another.” Numerous Gerudo nodded in remembrance of me. “And now, when I ask you spare one Kokair, you won’t even do that?!” I stood up angrily. “Where is your sense of honor?!” The two of us glared into each other’s eyes while the Gerudo throughout the camp muttered.

“Leave.”

I drew my sword and yelled, “Not without Cilia Kytail!!”

She drew her double scimitars and prepared to attack. “Leave or die.”

Saria and Nabooru were glaring at one another in a similar fashion. The Forest and Spirit Sages have rarely gotten along in the past. Ruto and Darunia and Impa, the Sages of Water, Fire, and Shadow respectively, were completely oblivious to everything going on. Rauru, the Sage of Light, tried to maintain peace between Saria and Nabooru, but I had just made that nearly impossible.

The other Gerudo of the camp armed themselves with spears and scimitars. Jordan opened a telepathic link with me. Josh, you have to think about Helen, too.

Why did she even come if all she-

She came to help Cilia, but this isn’t the way to do it.

Tension in the camp rose. Helen was back-to-back with me. The Gerudo had us outnumbered at least sixty to four, if you counted Jordan and Melina, that is. Helen suddenly spoke, “So, you have to outnumber and encircle and hold our friend hostage to beat two Kokair and two fairies?” The Gerudo muttered amongst one another some more. I kicked both sacks high into the air, followed them up, and opened them. Thousands of Deku Nuts rained down, blinding everyone. I landed, picked up Helen and the sacks, and ran out of the camp. I stopped four dunes away and, with my vision slowly returning, watched the Gerudo scramble like ants.

“That was the least responsible thing you could have done!” Melina insulted when she could see me. “We’ve abandoned Cilia!!”

“No we haven’t,” Jordan declared. “We have merely exhausted Plan A.”

“So, what’s Plan B?” Helen asked angrily.

“Sneak in, get Cilia out, get to the forest, wait out the war,” I replied quickly.

I saw a Gerudo with a whip enter a tent. Helen and I flinched at the cries of pain that shortly followed. “Josh”- Jordan started, but was too late.

CILIA!!!!” I roared as I drew my Kokiri Sword and charged madly. Helen was surprised, to say the least. That was hardly “sneaking”, after all. I yelled an old phrase for my battle cry, “The wolf is never intimidated by the number of sheep!” Blood began to cover the sandy dunes so thickly that they turned into mud dunes. Every last Gerudo was killed, even those that fled.

It was an hour until night; it was the hour of twilight.

Josh… what separates you from Shadow Link now? Jordan’s question stung harder than any wound could ever sting.

I gave them a choice and I have to save Cilia. He-

We don’t know anything for sure, Josh.

I shook my head and entered the tent that I knew Cilia was in. I couldn’t bear to see her like she was. Her clothes had been torn, her skin was bruised and scratched, and she was chained to a wooden post with iron chains, but that only made me feel better that I had found vengeance on the Gerudo that had done this to her.

I reached into my Magic Sack while Jordan smashed an overturned pot, which revealed Marth’s exhausted body. I slashed the chains with my sword and wrapped Cilia’s beaten body in a blanket while Jordan helped Marth up and into my hat. I handed Helen some spare Kokair clothing as she ran over.

“Cilia’s too weak to dress herself,” I explained.

She nodded and said, “Turn around.” I obeyed.

Do you think I’m justified now?

Over sixty Gerudo killed to save one Kokair and one fairy… that’s not a fair trade, Joshua.

She’s been whipped and battered, Jordan, I’m not letting her get back in this war.

You can’t-

I can and I will. I won’t lose her.

“Alright, we’re ready,” Melina declared.

I turned around to see Cilia barely able to stand. “You’re too weak to walk.”

“I’m fine,” Cilia lied obviously.

“You’re a poor liar,” I stated as I picked her up in my arms and carried her out of the tent. Helen followed on my right. “I should have brought a lot of potions, sorry.”

“I said I’m fine, Josh, you don’t”-

“You’re injured, I’m not; you’ve been whipped, I wasn’t; I’m carrying you back to the forest.”

Cilia blushed and managed a soft, “Thank you.”

Helen asked, “Josh, how were you able to have done what you did?”
I lied, “I dunno.” She glared at me, but did not pursue the topic further. “I’m sorry, Cilia.”

“Sorry for what?”

“Sorry for… for not having been there to have prevented this. We should rest until nightfall.” I set Cilia in a shady part of a dune and sat down. Helen knelt over Cilia and gave her some water. Helen’s, Cilia’s, and my ears twitched and I stood up. Helen drew her sword and glanced about nervously. I faced the east and asked, “Who are you and what are you doing here?”

The sand lumped together and rose up in the shape of a dragon head lying on the sand. “I live here.” It sounded like rocks were rubbing together.
“May we rest here, then?” Jordan asked politely.

“Until evening, but do not step on me,” it said and did something that sounded like chuckling.

I lay down and rested. “Is there such a thing as a just war?”

“As you should have learned ages ago, there is no such thing,” the Sand Dragon replied. “I am Zahnim.” Its head looked up to the sky.

“We’re honored to make your acquaintance,” Jordan said respectfully. Zahnim nodded and sank back into the sand dunes.

“Umm, what was that?” Helen finally asked with wide eyes.

“Zahnim the Sand Dragon,” Jordan replied as he lay on my hat.

“He seems like a decent fellow; don’t worry.”

Cilia easily fell asleep in the still warm shade. I lay but couldn’t sleep. Evening was coming and I was still reflecting on my mass killing. Helen was next to Cilia and keeping an uncertain eye on me.

When night fell, the sky was sparkling with its jewels and pearl. I rose and said, “Time to go.” Helen nodded and tried to pick up Cilia, but soon realized she wasn’t strong enough.

Zahnim rose up and said, “Climb aboard, forest folk.” I grinned, walked over to Cilia, who had awoken at Zahnim’s words, and picked her up in my arms while Helen leaped up onto Zahnim’s head. Jordan and Melina carried the equally weary Marth between them by his shoulders. Zahnim slithered among the dunes and occasionally through them, too. Meanwhile, he and I spoke.

“So, Zahnim, you have any friends?”

“A large sea turtle in Termina and several other old friends,” he replied.

“I see; he looks like an island with two palm trees and floats off the coast most of the time, right?” I wanted to make sure I knew who he was talking about.

“Indeed, that is the one. He was just speaking to me, and he wanted me to pass on a message, and in fact, I believe he’s quite right.”

“What’s the message?” Helen asked.

He spoke in ancient Kokirin, “Joshua, you are the most vengeful being in Hyrule, you must conquer your hatred against the Gerudo, Arori, and Zoras.”

“Aww, how are we supposed to know what you said?” Melina asked.

“You’re not,” Jordan replied, “It was a message for Joshua and me, after all.”

“I know much, forest folk; maybe you wouldn’t mind coming back for a visit when the wars are over?” Zahnim asked as we arrived at the forest.
I picked up Cilia in my arms. “Sounds like a good idea to me.”
He slowly sank into the sand and left us right at the border without even a good-bye. I began to walk forward into the forest in the direction of the village. Melina asked, “Josh, what did Zahnim say and mean and why did you lie about how you could kill all of those Gerudo?”

I stopped and replied, “Kokiri and Kokair are called forest folk. I didn’t lie, either; I don’t know how I could have killed so many; I simply did.”

“You’re evading the first question,” Melina stated.
I ignored her as I continued. Cilia asked, “Josh, how many Gerudo did you kill to save me?”

“Sixty, but enough of the questions please, I’m already tired. I’ll take you to the-…” I stopped. “Something’s wrong.” I turned and began to my home. I took care of Cilia there. Helen went to the village and discovered it had been wiped out, just like the camp.

Cilia used my bed, I used a rocking chair on my porch in front of the door, and Helen propped two chairs facing each other. Her back rested against one and her feet on the other. I shielded them from the rest of the war. My home was visited by animals with stories of the battles, but the war was already over as far as the six of us were concerned.

Finally, two months later, the war ended because both sides had dwindled too much. The Kokair abandoned the village in the northwest and returned the captive, too.

As for Saria and Nabooru, they agreed to simply keep far away from each other.
Helen once more approached me when the war had ended, “If you hadn’t done what you did, we may not have won.”

“Cilia was captured, imprisoned, and whipped. Many Gerudo paid for that. A Gerudo was captured and imprisoned. Just as many Kokair died. Neither side ‘won’, both sides lost.”

Helen looked down and left. Melina asked, “If there is a curse to being immortal, is this it?”

Jordan replied, “Regret and bitter memories may never die, just like us. They are our curses.”
