Dani's Knitting Notes

Make it up as you go along cardigan

I started thinking about this in April 2006.  The idea was to make a garment out of a single strip of knitting, which would snake around the body - up one side of the back, over the shoulder, around and across the lower back, up the other side of the front, and over the other shoulder to meet itself again.

I made several prototypes for toys that live in our house, starting with this one, for Action Man:

Eventually I settled on a design that involved weaving together the strip across the lower back and the two that go up the two halves of the back, and also included origami style folded pockets.

Eighteen months on from the original thought, I now have this (sorry about rubbish pictures - it's quite a dark garment, so it's hard to get the detail with the flash)

Here's a close up of the cable design on the front:

and here's the weaving across the back:

I unravelled two jumpers from charity shops to get the yarn, and still ran out before I managed to make any sleeves.  I've now found another one I can cannibalise, so sleeves are my next project.

Update: October 2008.  This is now all finished, with sleeves, buttons and everything.  Hooray!
