THE CHRISTIAN STUDIO

The production and distribution of

movies impacting our society for Christ.

Cecil B. DeMille stated, "It is a sobering thought, that the decisions we make at our desks in Hollywood may intimately affect the lives of men, women, and children throughout the world" (Essoe, Gabe; Lee, Raymond 1970. p160. DeMille: The Man and his Pictures. New York)

The greatest anti-Christian influence in America today is the Hollywood movie industry promoting virtually everything that is offensive to God and that should be offensive to God’s people. The Hollywood studios are continuously releasing one movie after another while only infrequently releasing movies of faith. The moral compass in the film industry took a downward swing in the mid-1960s and has been getting worse ever since. Prior to that the motion picture industry had standards of decency with producers like Cecil B. DeMille producing a number of Biblical epics. Possibly the largest premier ever held in Hollywood was at the opening of Grauman’s Chinese Theater in 1926 with DeMille’s silent film epic KING OF KINGS. DeMille penned these thoughts about the struggle for men’s minds after making THE TEN COMMANDMENTS with the late great Charlton Heston:

"More than 3,000 years ago, the great charter of human relations was brought down from Sinai on two tablets of stone by one who was also a builder between man and man and between man and God. In the drama that took place there on Sinai you have in the two brothers, Moses and Aaron, a perfect contrast between public relations used to delude humanity. Both Aaron and Moses saw the peoples need. Aaron taking the short view and looking for the quick result gave the people something glittering to worship, the golden calf. Moses gave them the truth. He gave them hardship, privation, a long, parched, sun-baked hungry trek through the most desolate and forbidding deserts to the foot of Sinai and the Ten Commandments. Between those two, the calf of gold and the law of God, the struggle for men's minds and hearts continues to this day. The outward form of the struggle changes but it goes on in every age, facing all men with the same question. Which do you put first, material values or spiritual values?"

I had the privilege of getting to know Cecil B. DeMille's daughter, Katherine DeMille Quinn. She was a very gracious lady with a fervent heart for the Lord. I was involved with her in a prison outreach ministry, the Hollywood Free Theater, and on the Board of Directors of the domestic crisis-intervention ministry Centrum of Hollywood.

The major Hollywood studios continue to produce and release movies that are demoralizing and filled with obscene language, profanity, senseless violence, gratuitous sex, and the promotion of a hedonistic worldview devoid of God. There has also been an increase of films in recent years promoting the demonic which portray evil triumphing over good.

Meanwhile, there have also been some very good movies produced by Christians that have been released in recent years. A few examples would include THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, AMAZING GRACE, END OF THE SPEAR, FACING THE GIANTS, THE NATIVITY STORY, and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

However, for every movie of faith and redemption there are hundreds of movies released by the major studios and independent film companies polluting viewers minds with anti-Christian images and messages.

The goal of The Christian Studio (TCS) is to accelerate the number of movies of faith and redemption that can help turn the tide of evil in our society and turn hearts toward the Lord. Many of the movies that would be produced would deal with social problems (family breakups, substance and psychological addictions, homosexuality, abortion, gangs, violence, suicide, etc.) while at the same time dramatizing God-given solutions for these problems. I worked on the movie version of THE CROSS AND THE SWITCHBLADE years ago. It relates the true story of Nicky Cruz, one of the most violent gang leaders in New York City and a country preacher who eventually led him to Jesus Christ and a new life. Over the years that movie has been responsible for tens of thousands of individuals finding new life in Jesus Christ.

The Christian Studio will not have a large facility like the Hollywood studios. The purpose of TCS is to facilitate a continuous flow of movies being produced that can have an impact for Christ on our nation. TCS will receive and develop screenplays and treatments from Christian writers and evaluate them -- not only for their potential commercial success, but also for their potential spiritual influence on our society.

THE PURPOSE OF THE CHRISTIAN STUDIO IS TO BRING SCREENPLAYS, TOGETHER WITH INVESTORS AND PRODUCERS, TO MAKE MOVIES OF FAITH AND REDEMPTION. Prior to funding, each story will be evaluated for its potential for commercial and spiritual success. The objective is to have several movies in production at the same time, through independent production companies, and have a continuous flow of these dynamic and quality movies released to the public. Budgets would vary from a low of $100,000 and $25,000,000.

Examples of a few of the stories that I believe have great potential for commercial success, while at the same time having a positive influence for Christ, would include the following:

1. DESHAZER AND FUCHIDA: one of the most amazing true stories of God's transforming power to come out of World War II. This story focuses on Mitsuo Fuchida, who was the lead Japanese pilot on the raid on Pearl Harbor; and Jacob DeShazer, who accompanied DooLittle on his raid over Japan. Both men eventually became good friends as a result of God's grace.

2. THE PILGRIM’S STORY: presents an important chapter in our nation’s spiritual heritage. The story takes us from treason to Thanksgiving

3. JOHN NEWTON: Martin Bennet's screenplay on the life of John Newton is a powerful and very accurate account of his life.

4. NORMA MCCORVEY: (Jane Roe, in the Supreme Court case ‘Roe VS Wade’) Norma's story and her subsequent conversion has the potential of helping to overturn Roe VS Wade (especially if someone like Mel Gibson were to produce the movie).

5. KEITH GREEN: impacted youth around the world in the late 1970s and early 80s with his dynamic music and his radical faith in Jesus Christ. The movie would recount his beginnings, his rise, and his surprising and untimely death.

6. THE BILL COLLECTOR: a Christian comedy written by Cristobal Krusen producer of FINAL SOLUTION and FIRST LANDING.

7. TELL IT TO THE MAFIA: the true story of former mafia member Joe Donato.

8. TORTURED FOR CHRIST" the amazing true story of Romanian Pastor Richard Wurmbrand who was imprisoned and tortured.

9. ESTHER LEE BARHAM: She found that with the Lord even in her weakness (blind and paralyzed) God's power could be revealed.

10. REVEREND GLENN ADKINS: spent many years as a singing street evangelist in Hollywood, Topanga Canyon, and other cities. His experiences are recounted.

Additionally, I have written screenplays or treatments for the following stories:

1. THE DEPARTURE OF ROGER SCOTT: tells the story of a young man caught up in a spiritual battle as he struggles to exit the homosexual lifestyle. A DVD is available and, although this original production is not broadcast quality, I would like to see it remade with production capital.

2. SURVIVAL AT DEARBORN: a comedy based on a group home for juvenile boys in central Los Angeles at which I worked in the late 1960s. A Texan in his mid twenties, just out of the Navy, takes a job as a counselor out of desperation at Dearborn Boy's Home. The boys have a contest to see how fast they can run off a new counselor. The new counselor's anger and frustration eventually turns to compassion as he comes to know the young men and becomes aware of the family and environmental factors that helped contribute to their sense of hopelessness. SCREENPLAY AVAILABLE

3. SAMMY: Sammy Welmas, my friend, volunteered to work with us full-time at Centrum of Hollywood after personally finding freedom from alcoholism and joy in helping others through Centrum’s 24-hour crisis-intervention telephone hotline. It was during this time that the Cabazon Tribe, near Palm Springs, brought in John Nichols to manage the affairs of their 30-member tribe. Nichols convinced Sammy to work with the tribe full-time offering him a new car and other incentives. It was not an easy decision because Sammy loved serving others at Centrum. He also knew that I did not approve of the means by which John Nichols was attempting to make the tribe prosperous. I had also conveyed my concerns to Nichols. Nichols had the tribe selling liquor by the case as well as opening a Gambling Casino. The Cabazon Tribe prospered, but not without controversy. Nichols was suspected of having ties with the mafia and participating in the distribution of a stolen secret federal government Security Software Program. He was also a suspect in the 1981 murder of Fred Alvarez, a former tribe official who, with two friends, were killed execution style. Several years later Nichols went to prison in another case involving murder-for-hire. Two of Sammy’s cousins had also been murdered. It is very likely that alcohol contributed to the diabetic attack that resulted in Sammy’s untimely death in 1981 at a time he was seriously considering returning to volunteer at Centrum of Hollywood. TREATMENT AVAILABLE

4. CENTRUM OF HOLLYWOOD: based on actual events that occurred in association with Centrum's Crisis Homes for men and for women and their 24-hour telephone hotline (Hollywood Lifeline). Volunteers were available around-the-clock to rescue those in crisis situations (e.g., teenage runaways or prostitutes trying to get away from pimps). SCREENPLAY AVAILABLE

5. THE CALLL: a comedy about a shoddy gang of con-artists who hijack a church in Hollywood only to discover they can't rob God. SCREENPLAY AVAILABLE

6. THE SPENDERS: a story about two sisters who simultaneously leave Dallas with their husbands for a one-week vacation. The more affluent of the two couples flies into Las Vegas to enjoy and spend their resources on the pleasures of ‘sin city’, while the other couple drives to Mexico to spend their time and resources helping out at a poor orphanage. TREATMENT AVAILABLE

7. DEAR MAMA: the story of a young man who financially takes advantage of his elderly mother in order to selfishly pursue his dream of stardom in Hollywood. He talks his mother into buying him a limousine with his assurance to her that he would soon be able to pay her back. His new venture soon turns into a disaster with one unbelievable trial after another. Eventually the son decides to bring his mother from New York to give her the kind of care she deserves when she suddenly passes away. The story has a message of redemption. TREATMENT AVAILABLE

8. THE STORY OF THE PILGRIMS: this epic story has never been filmed dramatizing their Pilgrim’s saga from beginning to end. From being charged with treason when they stopped attending the Church of England, through their Thanksgiving celebration with the Indians on the Cape Cod coast of America. TREATMENT AVAILABLE

The Christian Studio would evaluate such stories as I have listed as well as others in terms of overall budget and potential for commercially-successful production, including potential theatrical release, television production, release to churches, and/or DVD release and distribution.

There is hope for America and may the production of movies of faith influence millions of lives for Christ.
