"Bringing seamanship to River and estuary "

MSTS ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN SECURITY

FIRST STEPS dealt with keys, gas use and supply, basic ENTRY and DEPARTURE procedures, how to use lights and stove, wash up etc.

SECOND STEPS dealt with above plus SIGNING ON, REPORTING, EXAMINING very basic electrics, mooring lines, bilges, pumps.

THIRD STEPS deals with ALL the above and develops the topics already introduced. The intention is to comply with the ChainGang mission statement. It is our duty to ensure that " The Ship is Ready to Sail ". We will now check that she is indeed ready and the first thing to ensure is SECURITY.

For a proper waterman, it is basic practice to ensure that the boat is properly tied up, has not been tampered with, is not about to sink or 'run agound' and can leave its mooring under power, sail or tow.

SECURITY CHECK LIST:

MOORING AND WARP STATUS

There are more ways to tie the boat up than there are Skippers and Mates. There is only one right way, a few acceptable ways and many wrong ways. It is hoped that the skippers may decide on the right way some day and then show the rest of us. Meanwhile !

BILGES AND PUMP STATUS

Learn all the different ways of pumping water out of the ship. There are at least nine  pumps on board which can do this. Learn what they are, where they are, how they work and what would happen if they did not work or stopped working!

ENGINE ( ROOM ) STATUS

The engine room is critical to the safety of the boat at sea.

ELECTRICAL  STATUS

HYGIENE STATUS

DRINKING WATER STATUS

SHIP-SHAPE AND READY
