LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT - KIT-HAN-NE REGION OF THE AACA
I’m sure that all of you were as shocked as I was hearing about Denny Thomas. We’ve really lost a wonderful Kit-Han-Ne member and friend. I thank everyone who joined us for the cruise to the funeral home for Denny – we had about 14 cars. George, Mimi, Jorn and I went to the funeral today. Denny’s family members were really great and just like Denny. He will truly be missed. Please go to the club website and view pictures and a story on Denny. The family is looking for someone to take in Denny’s dog Bear – she is a mid-size black lab mix about 3 years old, and she looks like a bear. Please contact me if you can take her in, otherwise, its off to Orphans of the Storm.
This Friday, July 10th evening is Nostalgia Night at Lernerville. If you are a racing fan, especially old-time racing, this may a night to go to Lernerville. They have invited 52 veteran drivers to the event and about 10 race cars of various types. The drivers will pose for pictures with the cars, and for group pictures. There will be many souvenirs available – many people buy Lernerville racing tee shirts and bring magic markers with them and have the drivers autograph the shirts. Autographs are done with the drivers sitting at a long line of tables, sort of like a buffet table. Jorn was invited to bring the #28 car, so he will be there. They allow the owners and drivers to take the cars out on the track – Jorn did that last year, but didn’t have enough traction on clay for an asphalt car, so he just chugged around the track and had a blast.
The HAVIN cruise/show at Kalmar Motors is Saturday, July 11th ,from 11AM until 3 PM. Same thing there – we need volunteers to show up early (9 AM or so) and help with the work for the day. Our Region is working with the Kiski Valley Region to make this a really great event. Kalmar Motors will provide dash plaques and give-aways, HAVIN will be selling food and drink, and we will be selling 50/50 for HAVIN. Any club members willing to make cookies, cupcakes, brownies, etc., to help HAVIN make a larger profit from the event, please bring them to the show with you. Kalmar is putting together the music, so we’re covered there. Thank you in advance for attending and for helping.
Sunday, July 12th, is the big Keystone Kruisers cruise at the Worthington West Franklin fire hall in Worthington. There is a single $500 cash grand prize handed to one lucky car entrant. They also have a Chinese auction, a 50/50, and the firemen cook food for the event. It is from 4 PM to 8 PM. The Keystone Kruisers strongly support the CADET Cruises – please support their one big event of the year.
So, there you go, 3 car things in 3 days – makes a full local calendar.
Wednesday, July 15th, is our next Cadet Cruise. We need setup people by 2 PM. Please come out and help if you can – please attend if you can. We are searching for a DJ for hire and plan to have one at the cruise.
Saturday, July 18th, is the first ever Chili Cook off at the Worthington West Franklin fire hall in Worthington. This event is put on by the Association for the Blind of Butler and Armstrong Counties. The event runs from 10 AM until 9 PM, with the car cruise being early – 10 AM to 2 PM. There are two other local cruises this same day – the Shannock Valley Car Club Rural Valley Festival Cruise, 3 PM until ?, and the Good Tire Cruise to benefit Kittanning Township Volunteer Fire Company, 5 PM until ?. Put some miles on the old cars that day!
Saturday, July 25th – Bud Garvey’s annual race car museum cruise & feed. Possible caravan to Osceola Mills, PA (midway between Clearfield and State College). One route, to join a big caravan to the event, is 422 east to Belsano, then south on route 271 to the big Sheetz on route 22 to pick up about 30 cars traveling to the same event. This is a day trip event. Another route, if we’d go by our own group, would be a lot shorter by heading up towards route 80 and head east on some good roads (we’d stay off route 80). Let me know if anyone wants to go so we can make plans. Jorn’s been there and had a great time – good food, free, but donations accepted. Many cruise cars there, plus all of the race cars.
Some big national events:
The annual Packard show at the National Packard Museum in Warren, Ohio – the week of July 20th. If there’s interest in a caravan over to Warren to see some beautiful Packards, then we’ll plan a day trip for Sunday, July 26th, 2009, to the All Makes Cruise In on the Packard Museum grounds. On that Sunday, they’ll have the Boulevard of Classics open, as well as Café’s and vendors open. They’ll have Opus II: 1937 Packard Showroom open, art exhibits, children's art pavilion, and Chinese auction. There will be an All Makes Cruise In award presentation at 3:30 PM. From there, we’ll travel down to Niles, Ohio, to the new Quaker Steak and Lube for dinner and then travel home. Go to WWW.packardmuseum.org . Contact me soon if you want to go so we can complete the planning.
The Crown Victoria Association 31st Annual National Convention in Somerset, PA, during the week of July 27th. The days of interest might be Tuesday, July 28th, 10 AM to 4 PM, caravan of cars to tour the Flight 93 memorial site. Thursday, July 30th – Peoples’ Choice balloting (car show). Also, there will be a swap meet all week. Go to clubs.hemmings.com/frameset.cfm?club=crownvictoria. Same thing, if you’re interested in going, please contact me so we can complete the needed planning.
