GC Hired Gun aka Custer 2006-2009

Posted by kirtzingerquarterhorses on September 1, 2009 at 7:49 PM

It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Custer, our beloved palomino stallion by GC Hired Gun and out of Featured At Last, a daughter of At Long Last.  Custer was the future of our breeding program and the source of many dreams for me - dreams that will have to be put on hold until his foals are old enough to follow in his hoofprints.

He was truly a great one and will be missed by everyone who knew the big boy.  We do have 6 mares in foal to Custer for 2010 and 3 foals on the ground by him this year - including a palomino colt "Glimmerman" owned by Michele Smith.  "Hemi" as he is known was the 2009 Canadian National Weanling Colt Champion.  Watch for Custer's babies in future AQHA shows.

Hi Sandy. This is such sad news, our thoughts and prayers are with you. I didn't know Custer well, but he was such an outstanding horse in so many ways, he will be missed by many. Take care Sandy,

Thanks Barb,
It's wonderful people like you who make me feel better. It's been tough. There's a huge empty stall in the barn and even Jose is lonely. I've weaned some of the babies so that he has company and that seems to have helped. We had 1 buckskin colt by him and 1 chestnut filly by him this year. Michelle Smith had a palomino colt by him that she showed at the Nationals and he won his class. We've got 6 of our own mares bred to him for 2010 as well as a number of outside mares, so we're hoping for good things next year. Waiting is going to be hard....
