Union Pacific
By far, the largest railroad presence in the St. Louis Area is the Union Pacific System. UP has multiple routes into St. Louis. The Jefferson City Sub through Kikwood from Kansas City, The Desoto Sub from Desoto, Missouri, the Chester Sub on the Illinois Side from Dexter, MO, the Pana Sub from Pana, IL and the Springfeild Sub from Springfeild, IL. Not only does the UP have this many lines, but they also have controlling interest in the Terminal Railroad Assoc. and they have 100% ownership of the Alton and Southern. The main traffic on the UP comes in the form of Coal. You have not really railfanned St. Louis until you have seen one of UP's Coal Trains, or have been given the finger by UP Engineer David "Spiv" Sanderbeck. Their Main yards are in Dupo, IL., and at Lesperence Street in South City.
