Norfolk Southern



The Norfolk Southern has the 2nd largest appearence in the St. Louis area. With 3 lines radiating from the the City. These lines are Former Wabash From Decator from the Northeast, to Kansas City to the west. The other line is former the Former Southern Railway. This line connects to the Rathole line. Another of the St. Louis predecessor's for NS is the Illinois Terminal. the IT provided interurban and freight service with Electric power until passenger Service was discontinued. IT's last new power was EMD SD38-2's and GP38-2's, and was merged into the N&W in the early 1980's. NS has 2 major yards in the area. Luther yard in North St. Louis on the Missouri Side, an A.O. Smith yard in Granite City on the Illinois Side. Other than those two yards, NS operates a Triple Crown Roadrailer yard north of Mitchell, IL. Whenever you go railfanning on the East side of the River, you will be sure that you will see at least 1 NS train.

NS is known more for its large fleet of C40-9W's and GP38-2's. However, it does own a small fleet of Switchers. An SW1500, built for the Penn Central, rests at the Terminals Engine shop.
