The Alton and Southern Railway



The Alton and Southern is a wholly owned Subsidary of the Union Pacific Railroad. The A&S operates a small group of 17 Locomotives that includes 14 SW1500's, 2 GP38-2's and 1 MP15AC. The A&S operates the largest Classification yard in East St. Louis and Alorton. At its western end, there is Valley Jct, the Busiest Railroad Location in the St. Louis area. This area is good for photography only in the Afternoon. The Eastern end is in the Slums, an area known as Alorton. This area is good for Morning Photography. Other than Gateway Yard, The A&S runs a 22 Mile mainline North from Alorton to Lennox Tower in the Village of Mitchell. The A&S is represented in the Modeling Community by Athearn, who released the 2 GP38-2's in HO scale 3 years ago.


Here are the "Twins", or as Kelly Dunlap calls them, the "Twinks". Here, the Twins lead a Transfer to the Terminal in Madison.
