In light of the main theme of the site for the moment, the anime of the month shall in fact be a manga. We shall be discussing Godchild (no spoilers! I promise!). Godchild is a gothic shoujo mystery story written by Kaori Yuki. It is a continuation of an earlier series of her work called The Cain Saga. Godchild is all events in the life of Earl Cain Hargreaves, heir to the Hargreaves fortune, from the time he is 17 onward. Truthfully, I believe all 8 books span only a year. How unfortunate that so much should happen to on person in one year...*sighs* Anyway, I believe the first chapter of the first volume is a good opener. "A Mad Tea Party" is what it is called, I believe. Cain is staying at the house of a noble family (who will be known simply as 'the noble family' until I can remember their last name...) and is compelled to investigate the mystery of the 'The White Rabbit'. It seems to be a pasttime of his. After all, he really doesn't get anything out of solving mysteries and crimes, and he has no definite profession that requires such activities.

|~Earl Cain Hargreaves~|

Cain is the heir to the Hargreaves fortune, and head of the household after his father passed away violently, his final words damning Cain to die alone and unloved. Cain was born from the union of his father Alexis and Alexis' older sister, Augusta. It is rumored that Cain's beautiful golden eyes are the mark of his incestuous creation. Augusta is supposedly the source of his hair color, as well. She passed violently as well, throwing herself out the window of her room in the asylum, convinced that young lord Cain was his father one day when he came to visit her. Alexis, however, died by smoking arsenic (*giggles*) and jumping off a cliff (*giggles*). A terrible past haunts Cain, but all of that changes when he is 12 years old. At this age, his guardian is his Uncle Neil, but it is time to appoint a new head butler and who would become his personal valet and practically his only real friend.

|~Riffael Raffit~|

Known really only as Riff, this man as witnessed some of the horrible cruelty of Alexis Hargreaves. He has seen the scars on Cain's back. And he is the only one allowed to touch them. From the time that Cain was 10, he had talked to him and actually acknowledged him; he wasn't really supposed to do that. Riff has a dark past, which I cannot reveal here due to the fact that I promised that I would not spoil things. *grins* As for his appearance, he looks much older than he is because of his white hair, though his blue eyes don't speak of his age at all.

|~Maryweather Hargreaves~|

Maryweather is the younger sister of Cain, but she was not a part of the household until she was 10 years old. Before that, she was a little girl on the streets, reading fortunes with tarot cards to make a living. Her mother was a maid in the Hargreaves household that Alexis had gotten ahold of. Cain discovered this and decided to adopt her as his true little sister after his father's death and a curious incident of attempted revenge when he passed her kiosk one day.
