Kingston Open 2000 Director's Report
TD/Report/Games: Frank Dixon, Organizer: Rob Hutchison
OPEN SECTION
IMs DEEN HERGOTT and TOM O'DONNELL, both of Ottawa, shared first place with 4/5 ahead of a strong field of 19 which included three National Masters and ten Experts. NMs Armando Valdizon and Miladin Djerkovic, along with Junior Prize winner Sebastian Predescu, trailed by half a point at 3.5/5. The play was fierce and uncompromising, and many interesting games were played. Expert Ron Brice of Hamilton knocked off Djerkovic in a first-round nailbiter, and Predescu notched the scalps of Experts Manon Leger, Geoff McKay, and Matthew Struthers to pick up a clutch of rating points.
U1950 SECTION
BOB WEBB of Smiths Falls emerged victorious with 4/5, ahead of former Kingstonian Undriadi Benggawan, now of Toronto, who scored 3.5.
U1600 SECTION
Nine-year-old junior RAJA PANJWANI, a recent arrival to Kingston, scored several upsets to share first place with Fabio Vivas at 4/5.

Kingston Open 2001 Director's Report
TD/Report/Games: Frank Dixon
OPEN SECTION
CHAMPION: PATRICK KIRBY (4.5/5)
SECOND: NM Mihnea Voloaca (3.5/5)
Kirby drew with highest-rated Master Miladin Djerkovic (2291), a former champion, and defeated Kingston's Whig-Standard champion, Expert Geoff McKay in the last round to capture the title. Master Voloaca overcame a first-round loss to Emil Smilovici, defeated Djerkovic, drew with Kingston's Peter Sibbald, an experienced Expert, in round 4, then won against the ubiquitous Expert Ron Brice in the final round to claim clear second. Kingston's young phenom Raja Panjwani, second-ranked in Canada for 10 years old, and rated 1861, beat Brice (2177) in the first round.
U1800 SECTION
CHAMPIONS: BRUCE LAMOND and MIKE McCRAW (4/5)
This was McCaw's first ever rated event, and he emerged as co-champion. Both he and veteran Lamond were unbeaten. Many upsets led to a real see-saw battle in this section.
Here are the T.D.'s selection of the more interesting games in the weekend event. Enjoy.

Kingston Open 2002 Director's Report
TD/Report/Games: Frank Dixon, Organizer: Rob Hutchison
OPEN SECTION
1st: NM Mihnea Voloaca (Ottawa) 4.5/5
2nd-3rd: NM Patrick Kirby (Kingston), NM Miladin Djerkovic (Ottawa) both scored 3.5/5
Class Prizes (U2050): Milenko Talajic (Ottawa), Jay Serdula (Kingston), and Emil Smilovici (Ottawa) all scored 2/5
Voloaca, with a performance rating of over 2500, defeated the other three Masters (Kirby, Djerkovic, and Ottawa's Peter Hum), also beat Kingston Whig-Standard Champion Geoff McKay, a Candidate Master, and drew only with the tough Candidate Master Ron Brice of Hamilton.
U1900 SECTION
1st-2nd: Bruce Lamond (Brockville) and Rajan Verma (Toronto) both scored 4/5
Class Prizes (U1600): David Ho (Kingston) and Kiel Meyer (Napanee) both scored 3/5.
Both Lamond and Verma were undefeated. Lamond had to survive a crazy time trouble battle with Lucas Radonich (3.5) in round four, where he swindled his opponent with seconds left on his clock, and salvaged a draw. Queen's student David Ho, in his first rated event, performed strongly to claim a class prize.

Kingston Open 2003 Director's Report
TD/Report: Frank Dixon, Organizer: Rob Hutchison
TD REPORT
A strong Open group and a good-sized Under 1800 group, totalling 35 players in all, enjoyed the friendly but competitive atmosphere of this annual stop on the EOCA Grand Prix.
In the Open section, young 15-year-old Master Sebastian Predescu of Ottawa triumphed with 4/5, half a point up on NMs Miladin Djerkovic and Peter Hum, also of Ottawa. Predescu beat Djerkovic in round 4, and held the draw against Hum in round 5 in a wild attacking game. Predescu also beat Kingston's champion, 12-year-old Expert Raja Panjwani, as well as defeating Kingston Chess Club President Rob Hutchison in a tough battle. Hutchison held top-rated NM Maher Saleh (2316) to a draw with Black.
In the Under 1800 section, upsets were the rule rather than the exception! Brian MacDonald of Kingston took clear first with 4.5/5, which included a draw in a completely won position where his opponent claimed stalemate, Brian agreed, except that it wasn't stalemate! Three players tied for second at 4 points: Brian Murray and junior Ryan Letourneau, both of Kingston, and junior Robert Hawley of Ottawa. All three of the joint runners-up were rated below 1400, but knocked off many of their higher-rated opponents!
The event saw a reunion between Queen's University chess people, past, present, and future! Rob Hutchison (class of 1974), Frank Dixon (classes of 1980 and 1990), Peter Hum (class of 1984), Maher Saleh (classes of 1988 and 1993), Ismail Ibrahim (class of 2000), Matthew Struthers (class of 2003), Alex Lambruschini (class of 2006), Dilip Panjwani (professor of Medicine), and Raja Panjwani (class of 2012) shared some memories and got caught up!
The event was a success because of cooperation between the Kingston and Queen's University Chess Clubs. The University club obtained the free site, and its President Alex Lambruschini helped Frank Dixon with directing duties. Rob Hutchison served as organizer, while Gerry DeLugt and Jim Cairns assisted with prize determinations.
Thanks to all who played and helped over the weekend! See you next year!

Ontario Open Report 2003
TD/Report: Frank Dixon
TD REPORT
Editor's Note: the following is TD Frank Dixon's anticipated final report on the event. We are pleased to post it as received. Frank adds: A record of games from the 2003 Ontario Open tournament, saved by carbon scoresheets, will soon be posted on the Kingston Chess Club's website, and a report for En Passant, including some annotated games, is in progress as well.
Short notice to organize, and several competing tournaments, didn't deter the fun of those 34 players who attended the 2003 Ontario Open in Kingston. There was a decent turnout from right around the province, including the amazing organizer John Rutherford and Shawn Geley, both of Thunder Bay, who made the 22-hour trip by car, armed with free posters for participants, to promote the 2003 Canadian Open in Kapuskasing.
Play was organized in three sections: Open, U2000, and U1600, with six rounds, and a slower time control of 40/120, SD/60, with two rounds per day over the May long Victoria Day weekend. Class prizes and Junior prizes in the U2000 and U1600 stimulated interest right to the end. Differential entry fees by section and age, to encourage junior players, were a hit.
Competitors ranged in age from the 78-year-old Dr. James Cairns, retired RMC economics professor, still a formidable player, past president of the Canadian Correspondence Chess Association, one of the founders of the Kingston Chess Club in 1955, and a co-organizer of the 1966 Canadian Open and 1992 Canadian Closed, both held in Kingston; to the 10-year-old champion girl Yuanling Yuan of Ottawa, already rated over 1500.
A competitive and hard-fought Open group was won by NM Roger Patterson of Ottawa, with 4.5/6, half a point up on the ever-enthusiastic Expert Ron Brice of Hamilton. Patterson beat Brice with a beautiful attack, in the very first round, triumphing over Brice's favourite Najdorf Sicilian, and this proved decisive as far as the championship was concerned. Matthew Struthers of Cambridge and Kingston, a graduate student at Queen's University, a 1993 Canadian Junior competitor, and 1994 OCA Junior Coordinator, who has won all the trophies in Kingston-area chess, was playing his first serious event in several years, but roared out to a perfect 3/3 start, including upset wins over Patterson and over many-time Kingston champion Geoff McKay, before unfortunately having to withdraw due to a family emergency. TD and organizer Frank Dixon, past Kingston and Queen's University champion, filling in as the odd player in round two, surprised veteran Toronto Expert Peter Bokhout with his very own variation in the Black Knights' Tango, winning a spirited counterattacking game.
In the U2000 group, Paul Becker of Kitchener was in scintillating form, as he scored a perfect 6/6 to claim first place. Becker was perhaps a bit fortunate to win in round two, over Francisco de la Parra of Kingston, in a six-hour game where he was under strong pressure most of the time, but Francisco tried a fancy endgame combination which had a hole, and Becker took advantage. Becker's most impressive win was in round three over the Guyanese diplomat Errol Tiwari, currently posted in Ottawa, in a sharp line of the Najdorf Sicilian. Second place was claimed by Dr. Alex Danilov of Ottawa, with 5/6. Alex is the son of the late Dr. George Danilov, many-time Kingston champion through the 1950s and 1960s, who once drew GM Alexander Alekhine in a simultaneous game in Yugoslavia while Alekhine was World Champion. The U1800 Class prizes were shared by Mavros Whissell of Sudbury and Vladimir Epov of Peterborough. Junior prizes were claimed by Glen Barber and Sammy Yao, both of Ottawa, who drew their six-hour last round encounter. The young girl player Yuanling Yuan, also of Ottawa, top-ranked for players under age 10 in Canada, won a wonderful attacking game against Alex Lambruschini, former captain of the Upper Canada College chess team, who is now president of the Queen's University Chess Club.
In the U1600 section, young grade ten student Ryan Laming of Cornwall, playing in his first CFC event, made a perfect score to romp to the title. Second prize was won by Lorenz Paulsen of Kingston. The U1400 Class prize was won by Alex Reid of Gananoque. Michael Chan of Ottawa and Melissa Darbyson of Corbeil won Junior Prizes.
The event was co-organized by the Kingston and Queen's University Chess Clubs, which worked together to secure an excellent site at the University for free. Frank Dixon, CFC Governor, Queen's University chess coach, and Vice-President of the Kingston Club, organized and directed the tournament, on a volunteer basis, and got a few rounds of chess in as well, filling in as the odd player, while not competing for prizes, which he announced in advance.
Generous financial support was provided by the Kingston Chess Club, the Eastern Ontario Chess Association, and the Ontario Chess Association. Thanks very much to all of those groups.
Players were generous in their praise for the organizers, and although it was a fairly small event, everyone had fun, the rounds were competitive and hard-fought, but in a friendly spirit, while there was only one dispute, which was eventually resolved to mutual respect.
Because of organizational difficulties, the Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Chess Association, which is normally held during the Open, was not held this time. Also, due to short notice, the event did not get onto the Grand Prix schedule for the Eastern Ontario Chess Association, a problem which has been remedied for the future by the EOCA in a recent meeting.
Here are the TD's selection of games (some with brief introductions) from the event.
