Is it really new?-

One may wonder what is all this tumult over so called “new” alphabet. Geez, also referred as Ethiopic,is not really a new alphabet. It is one of the few ancient alphabets which has existed since the time of the Egyptian, Ethiopian and Nubian civilizations. It is the script of Africa, mainly that of Ethiopia, which at the time included most part of sub-Sahara regions. Of course there are recent findings that support a theory that Egypt itself was part of this ancient civilization. The early Egyptians, who were mainly Nilotic, bragged about bringing their first kings and queens from the land of gods, Ethiopia. There are innumerable evidences that support the theory that Geez was one of the first few manuscripts that was developed right after the Hieroglyphic, which is a form of writing that uses sets of symbols. Of course there is also another theory provided by European and Euro-American Historians:It promotes the idea that Geez was derived from another manuscript known as Sabbean. The irony about this theory is that the very people who were known as Sabbeans, who were subjects of the ancient Ethiopians, got their writing from Africa(please see the resemblance between the ancient African writings and the so-called Sabbean and even Arabicfrom which the west claim to get its numerics. These so-called Euro and Euro-American historians seem to, deliberately, neglect the facts including that most part of Middle East, the land of the Sabbeans, who lived in the area currently known as Yemen, were under the ancient Ethiopians. The historians` theory is no more than a myth that is designed to fulfil the hidden agenda of those of Europeans and Euro-Americans of 16th century and after.

Figure#4
It is not unusual for these so called Euro and Euro-American historians to come up with new theory whenever new archeological findings, that show Africa’s rich history and heritage, are explored in or out of the continent. Their theories are not pure coincidences to the new findings. How does one maintain lie when the recent archeologicl explorations show otherwise by uncovering their lie? Yes, most of Africa’s history, unfortunately, has been written or rewritten by these quasi historians. It has been some hundred years since they began to rewrite African history, or that of the world, in order to reconstruct their own history/image. The lie had to be maintained also in order to carry on with their new found plan of "exploration" and so called "teach God’s word" to the rest of the world; as if the rest of the world did not have its own God. Christianity was in Ethiopia for more than 150 years before it got to Rome, so called birth place of Catholic(universal)Church. It is started in the very land, Egypt, where Europeans invaded to “teach” Christianity to those who invented it. An African proverb, from Ethiopia, goes:” A fool daughter attempts to teache her mother how tolabor.” It means that the child must have given birth to a baby before her own mother ever did. The archeological findings that have been discovered in Ethiopia, so far, surpassed any of those found in Yemen or anywhere in the Middle East, excuse me, I should add Europe.I believe this supports my theory that the Ethiopians had been the founder of the early civilization. And I also believe that Geez was part of this ancient civilization. One of the ideas that made me reinvestigate the Euro and Euro-American claims which I was exposed to while I was back in school, in Ethiopia, was the theory that every civilization began in Europe. Well, what come to my mind as I grew older was,” If that is true, then why didn’t the archeological or any other findings in Europe support the historians’ claim? Or show some form of similarity to the findings in Africa. If/when we had such similarity of works, the one that was found in Africa pre dated that of Europe. What does that say? Who is the original and who is the copy cat? Who is the mother and who is the daughter? I recently noticed the similarity between the monuments in Washington DC and in Axum, Ethiopia. One may examine the facts to see that either Axum or the monument in Axum predated,by thousands of years, the very day United Stated of America was founded. I have not, so far, heard any claim by the Americans as to the originality of their monument. (The monument I am referring to in Ethiopia still stands beside the famous Axum Obelisk) But, again, I don’t have to go that far to prove my point.I should just grab Herodotus book II to see who really Ethiopians were.

Oh, Ishould mentionthat this so-called great historian himself came to Africa to study history under his African masters. So did all of those so-called Greek philosophers, except Socrates. Even himself was tutored by Arstamines, one who went to Africa to study under his African teachers. I know,I know I am going a bit far from my topic, Geez. Geez is still in use in the nations of 70 million people. Nations of Ethiopia and Eritrea use Geez as the official manuscript that is being used for the nations’ major communications and academia. Like many of the manuscript in the world today, the computer programmers from both nations have been working to develop softwares that could be used with word processing, graphic, desdtop publishing and other form of editing softwares. There are at least 20 types of Geez font softwares in use currently. There is also a computer game designed in Amharic. Amharic has been Ethiopia’s official language at least for the last 800 years. Like Tigrigna, Tegre, Guragegna and Aderigna, to mention some, Geez is one of Amharic’s roots. Geez also has been developed to serve on line for e-mails and online chat. Today, anyone with the software and reading and writing skill of Geez may find it handy both on and off line.

THESTRUCTURE:

There are 250 plus letters in Geez alphabet, seven vowels instead of five. The vowels are not written out. Instead they are represented by strokes that are added to the consonants. The only way one may identifies which vowel is hidden is by looking at the stroke. The strokes indicate how a particular letter should be pronounced. There are special cases when different types of strokes are needed to represent the same vowels. There are also cases where vowels are written out. That is only when their main purpose is not to serve as vowel (see fig.#1 for types of vowels). There are few cases when, the use of strokes do not fall in the general Geez grammar. There are also letters with different types of shapes, though they produce the same sound (see fig.#2). The purpose of having different types of letters that are pronounced the same way is that some are used for matter of importance while the others are used for common cases. For instance, in one of the 87 languages spoken in Ethiopia, Amharic (which is also the official language of the country), NIGUS means king; and ISAT means fire. As you can see, in both cases we have the sound of `S`. The type of `S` that is used to write ISAT is not used to write out NIGUS because NIGUS is perceived to be more important noun than ISAT(see example #4). I have displayed most of the Geez fonts above with their English equals(fig.#4). While I omit those Geez fonts that do not have their equals in English, I have posted those ones that have, more or less, similar effect. I have marked them with cyan color. I also have placed those letters that don’t need to be put together with another one in order to give the sound of ‘SH’ or ‘CH’(fig.#5). The followings are exampleshowing what a partycular translationof english words/nouns look like in Geez alphabet works:
