The Horror of Puppy Farms

Throughout the country there are hundreds, if not thousands of licensed and unlicensed puppy farms where dogs (and cats) suffer endless neglect, inhumane conditions and torture. The following are things you should know about these facilities

Dogs are kept together, cramped in wire cages or filthy pens.. some never touch the ground. Many are injured due to over crowding and fights; they have no means of escape..  Chances of seeing a vet ... zero!

The farms begin breeding bitches as young as 6 months and they are bred every heat cycle. Due to poor nutrition, continuous breeding, disease and filthy conditions they can rarely produce past the age of 4 or 5. She is now of no use to the farm. Cause of death ... shot or bludgeoned to death!

Puppies are taken from their mothers around 5-6 weeks of age and then sold to brokers who cram them in crates for resale all over the country, commonly through pet shops and newspaper advertisements ... many don't make it! Those who do survive are usually sick, have never had human contact or are inbred!

how can you help?

The most effective thing is pretty simple – don’t buy a puppy from a pet shop. Hit them where it hurts – in their pockets!

Buying a puppy from a puppy farm or pet shop is no cheaper that buying from a responsible breeder - in fact it will probably work out more expensive when potential vet’s bills and behaviour/training fees are taken into consideration. And of course, you can’t put a price on all that suffering…

If you know the whereabouts of a puppy farm!

1. Without entering the property or putting yourself in any danger, get as much information about the farm as possible – the name of the farmer, phone numbers and the full address.  Clip out advertisements for the farm if they appear in your local paper.  Where did you first hear about the farm?  How many breeds do they offer?  How regularly do the ads appear?  If you notice a van or truck coming and going from the farm, record the licence plate number.  This information may help Dogs Trust, the RSPCA or your local authority, if a prosecution or investigation goes forward in the future.
