"Well, the guys always figured rock'n roll would get them girls.
I always told them they were way too ugly to be interested in
girls, and I was right." - Steves Mom

Deryck – Guitar/Vocals

Cone - Bass/Vocals

Dave - Guitar/Vocals

Steve - Drums/Vocals

Comprised of four ugly young goons from Toronto, Canada, Bizzy D, Dave Brownsound, Cone and Stevo32, were all once members in separate rival bands in high school, when they decided to join forces to create one ultimate band 41 days into the summer going into grade twelve. That band was SUM41 and it kept their minds sidetracked enough to ensure that only three out of the four of them would get their diploma. So how did four seemingly uneducated, untalented, and unattractive dorks from Canada manage to dish out an album so deadly that 41 just may replace 666 as the new number of the beast?

Well, after landing a deal with Island Records in late December of 1999 with the help of their now infamous home made EPK which includes footage of everything from their energetic live show to super-soaker drive-bys, SUM41 began honing their skills on the road. Touring with bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Face to Face, the Offspring, Blink 182, Social Distortion and the Warped tour, they acquired enough worldly knowledge to develop their own recorded prophecy of impending doom and word of it is spreading like their butt cheeks. This recording is ALL

In order to capture their definitive pop-punk sound, SUM41 recruited producer, Jerry “Finnbad” Finn (Green Day, Blink 182), and engineer “Jesus” Joe McGrath to work on ALL KILLER, NO FILLER, an album soon to replace bibles in hotel rooms. With songs as catchy as “Fat Lip”, “In Too Deep”and “Motivation”, SUM41 could easily spark a fan base large enough to conquer the KISS army.

So prepare yourself because SUM41 has a hidden agenda. They’ve developed a doomsday device so foul it could ignite the beginning of the end like a blue angel. On May 8th, 2001, SUM41 will unleash ALL KILLER, NO FILLER, a force unlike any the world has ever seen. Frightened? You should be. Remember, SUM41
doesn’t only just want to conquer the world… they want to destroy it.

SIMPLE PLAN IS

PIERRE BOUVIER: Vocals

CHUCK COMEAU: Drums

DAVID DESROSIERS: Bass, Backing Vocals

SEBASTIEN LEFEBVRE: Guitar, Backing Vocals

JEFF STINCO: Lead Guitar

Hands up, who’s sick of debating what is or isn’t “punk”? If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already made up your mind about Simple Plan. But maybe it’s time to forget what you know, because Simple Plan couldn’t care less about people’s opinions of them. Simple Plan have spent the last year channeling their energy, positivity and, yes, sometimes frustration, into their music. And no matter how you want to label their music, the 11 songs on the band’s highley anticipated second album, Still Not Getting Any… proves that SP are not a punk band, a pop band, a rock band or whatever label you can come up with… they are just a great band… a band that strives to write great songs and put on a hell of a show!

Admittedly, a lot has happened since the Montreal, Canada band—vocalist Pierre Bouvier, drummer Chuck Comeau, bassist David Desrosiers and guitarists Sebastien Lefebvre and Jeff Stinco—released No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls… in the spring of 2002. Aside from selling a couple of million albums, the group have shared the stage with everyone from Rancid to Aerosmith; made appearances on the Vans Warped Tour for three years running (two as Headliners), and been nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards—not bad for five kids who used to tour in their parents’ station wagon.

“Songs about cars and partying do nothing for me,” explains Comeau. “I like songs where I listen and it makes me shiver.” That said, you may want to don a parka while listening to Still Not Getting Any…, because it’s packed with shiver-worthy moments: “Crazy,” chronicles the insecurities each of us go through on a daily basis (yes, even if you’re a rock star), while “Perfect World,” struggles to make sense out of loss. However, for a while, it looked like these songs would never come together.

“For us songwriting is a craft we really have to work hard at,” admits Comeau. After the band wrapped their first U.S. headlining tour with MxPx last February, Comeau and Bouvier spent three months in Vancouver writing every single day for the new album, throwing away more ideas than they came away with. “At first we had trouble coming up with stuff we loved, so we just kept writing and writing… never giving up. After months of doing this and pushing each other, it just came together,“ Bouvier explains. ‘Perfect World’ was one of the first good songs that we got, and from there the songs just started coming out of us like a waterfall.”

When it came time to record, the band enlisted famed producer Bob Rock (the man behind some of Metallica’s, Mötley Crüe’s and Bon Jovi’s biggest records). The vision behind Still Not Getting Any… was simple… the band would not restrict themselves to the punk genre, which ironically seems to have more rules than one can keep track of these days.

“I think on the first record we just wanted to write a pure pop-punk record, and on this one we didn’t care—we just wanted to write good songs,” explains Comeau. Bouvier has a fitting analogy for the band’s approach: “As an artist, why limit yourself to just doing certain things?” he asks aloud. “It’s like being a painter; do you decide to only use seven or eight colors, or blend the colors together and make the most beautiful painting possible. From the deeply personal story behind the album’s lead single “Welcome To My Life” to the insanely exhilarating guitar solo on “Promise”, this illustrates the band’s approach to songwriting.

Granted, Still Not Getting Any… isn’t going to be in the trip-hop section of any record store, but there are some surprises, be it the subtle but powerful interludes in “Shut Up”, the cool and yet intricate drum loop on “Perfect World”, the beautiful string section and touching lyrics you can hear on “Untitled”, or the epic string arrangement on “One.” “Thank You” recalls the early 90’s melodic punk bands who influenced Comeau and Bouvier’s old hardcore band, Reset.

The record is a bit different from the first one, but it’s still us,” Lefebvre is quick to point out. However, although Simple Plan are open to experimenting with the formula that made them famous, their biggest concern is not letting down their fans, because, that’s who this album is for. “The connection between us and our fans is the most important thing we have,” explains Desrosiers. “They’ll ultimately be the ones who make or break our album, not some music critic who’s already made his or her mind up about us,” Stinco adds. “Without them, I would probably be working a nine-to-five job that I hate.”

In the end, the band speak best though their lyrics, and during “Shut Up” when Bouvier sings, “Nothing you say today will ever bring me down,” it’s not calculated rebellion—it’s the truth. So, whose side are you on?

3: X-Tina

True to its title, Stripped, the audacious new RCA Records release from Christina Aguilera, strips away the last remnants of her previous teen idol persona and what’s left is as real as it gets.

The sixteen new tracks that comprise Stripped, including her sensational debut single, "Dirrty," showcases an unadorned, unfettered and fearlessly outspoken artist who has liberated herself, her soul and her music on an album that is as much a declaration of independence as it is a convincing demonstration of her fierce and original talent. Simply put, this is the real deal.

"When you’re seventeen years old, green and inexperienced, you’re grateful for any guidance and direction you can get." Says Christina on her rocket sled ride to the top following the 1999 release of her eponymously-titled debut album, with its string of consecutive chart toppers, including "Genie In A Bottle" and "What A Girl Wants." It was a feat she would repeat the following year with Mi Reflejo, the smash Spanish language version of her debut, followed by her hit holiday release, My Kind Of Christmas.

Ten million plus albums, a Grammy win for Best New Artist and a marathon round of world touring later, Christina began to fearlessly break free from the mass media mask that hid her true self, and the full scope of her talent.

"I felt trapped," she admits. "I was under the thumb of people who were mostly interested in keeping me doing exactly the same thing. But I’m not blaming anyone," she’s quick to add. "You learn fast in this business and, once I knew where I wanted to go, I didn’t let anyone get in my way."

Where she wanted to go, at least initially, was to her Los Angeles home where she could catch her breath, reconnecting with herself and her two canine companions. "I needed a break," she reveals. "I wanted to disappear into empty space for awhile. So much had happened in such a short time, and not only in my career. I’d gone through a breakup with my first real love and I began realizing that I should be experiencing a bit more of life than TV and recording studios, hotels and green rooms."

As well intended as her much-deserved hiatus may have been, the vocalist and songwriter still had to contend with the restless creative energy that had fueled her preteen trajectory from talent show contestant in and around her native Pittsburgh to international superstardom.

"I’m driven," is Christina’s frank admission. "Even in the midst of touring, I was thinking about what my next album would be, writing bits and pieces of songs in journals and scrapbooks."

That album, like Christina’s long overdue R&R, would have to wait. Unable to resist the lure of a promising creative collaboration, she joined forces with Pink, Mya and Lil’ Kim on the smash "Lady Marmalade" single and video. That eye-popping slice of ear candy kept her front and center in the international spotlight even as she began, slowly and steadily, to lay the groundwork for a musical manifesto that would change all the rules.

"I was straight ahead about what I wanted to do," Christina continues. "For a long time, I’d been uncomfortable with the image that had been built around me and my music. It felt like I was pretending, trying to hide the real me, and hurting inside because of it. This time I was determined to step beyond the hype and glitter, to take it back down to the bare necessities. It was like starting all over again."

Yet at the same time, Christina’s bold work-in-progress wasn’t simply a reaction to the past. "I wanted to explore some of the music that had inspired me coming up," she explains. "I’ve always been a huge fan of soul. I love real rock & roll and hip-hop, of course, is one of my biggest influences. I wanted it all."

And what she wanted she set about to achieve with a relentless determination and a willingness to stretch her creative boundaries. "I’ve always thought recording was about attaining perfection," she reveals. "What I discovered making this album is that getting across real feelings is what’s important. As much as possible, I wanted to have the listener right there in the studio with me. I wanted to introduce myself, to get down to it. What mattered was sharing what I was really going through…for the first time."

And the first and most formidable challenge for Christina was to assemble a supporting cast that, in her words, "weren’t influenced by my old image." A ruthless process of elimination yielded a production and songwriting team that included, among others, Pink producer Linda Perry; the team of Redman and Rockwilder; Alanis Morrissette producer Glenn Ballard; fast rising studio wizard Scott Storch, as well artist/producer Alicia Keys.

Recorded over an eighteen-month stretch, with Christina firmly at the helm every step of the way, Stripped slowly but surely took shape, not only as an exercise in breathtaking stylistic diversity but as a resonant and revealing look into the mind and emotions of a young woman on the verge of personal and professional liberation.

The result is resonant and revealing original tracks that decisively shred Christina’s squeaky clean persona, even as they set the stage for a career that, millions of albums and concert tickets later, is only now just getting started.

The proof is all over Stripped, from the opening notes of "Impossible," the smoky ballad by Alicia Keys, to the romantic revelations of "Can’t Hold Us Down," featuring the persuasive production of Scott Storch; from the soaring affirmations of "Beautiful," to blistering licks of "Make Over," to the superheated funk of "Dirrty," featuring Redman and Rockwilder. "I loved ‘Let’s Get Dirty,’" Christina reveals, "So I asked Rockwilder to put something together kind of like that for me." She laughs. "What I got was a little too close, but then I figured, ‘Why not?’ The track is like an answer song to the original, only from a female point of view."

As much excitement and surprise as a first listening to Stripped might generate, there are other textures, urgent, honest and unguarded, that emerge with time. "Everything I sing about in ‘I’m OK’ is real," she asserts. "I took it right out of my life and I’m singing it right to my Dad." While another Stripped standout, "Can’t Hold Me Down," may at first sound like payback to a certain superstar rapper, for Christina that’s hardly the point. "I haven’t got time for all that," is her retort. "I’m more interested in helping girls stand up for themselves. That’s what the song is about – double standards and how we’re supposed to look and act a certain way just to please men. If I have any influence as an entertainer, I want it to be optimistic and uplifting, to make this world a little better place to live."

For Christina Aguilera, it all begins by getting real. "This music is who I am," she confidently asserts. "You can take it or leave it, but I’m not going to change, not for anyone." In the end, she says, it’s a tribute to the millions of worldwide fans who have made her a household name. "Fans grow up, too," she smiles. "We’re all reaching out for something more real and if we really want it, we’re going to find it. This album is for anyone who really wants it."

4: eminem

The average rapper wouldn't be able to grace the pages of Rap Pages, VIBE, Rolling Stone, Spin, The Source, URB and Stress and go on a national tour months before their major-label debut album is released. Then again, Eminem isn't an average rapper. He's phenomenal.

The impending release of the The Slim Shady LP, his first set on Aftermath/Interscope Records, already has underground hip-hop heads fiending for Eminem. Chock full of dazzling lyrical escapades that delve into the mind of a violently warped and vulgar yet extremely talented wordsmith, the 14-cut collection contains some of the most memorable and demented lyrics ever recorded.

For Eminem, his potentially controversial and undoubtedly offensive songs will strike a chord with a multitude of hip-hop loyalists who believe they have little to lose and everything to gain.

"I'm not alone in feeling the way I feel," he says. "I believe that a lot of people can relate to my sh*t--whether white, black, it doesn't matter. Everybody has been through some sh*t, whether it's drastic or not so drastic. Everybody gets to the point of 'I don't give a f**k.'"

Those words are more than just a slogan for the Detroit resident. "I Just Don't Give A f**k" and "Brain Damage" are the two songs comprising Eminem's initial single from The Slim Shady LP. Each tune is sure to paralyze meek listeners with their relentless lyrical assault. Produced primarily by long-time collaborators FBT Productions, the Slim Shady LP also features beatwork from Aftermath CEO Dr. Dre. The N.W.A. alum handled beats for "My Name Is" (the second single), "Guilty Conscience" and "Role Model."

Dr. Dre was so impressed after hearing Eminem freestyling on a Los Angeles radio station that he put out a manhunt for the Michigan rhymer. Shortly thereafter, Dre signed Eminem to his Aftermath imprint and the two began working together. Thoroughly impressed with Eminem's previously released independent Slim Shady EP, Dre said they would include many of the EP's tracks on the album.

"It was an honor to hear the words out of Dre's mouth that he liked my sh*t," Eminem says. "Growing up, I was one of the biggest fans of N.W.A, from putting on the sunglasses and looking in the mirror and lipsinking to wanting to be Dr. Dre, to be Ice Cube. This is the biggest hip-hop producer ever."
But like many other rappers, Eminem's rise to stardom was far from easy. After being born in Kansas City and traveling back and forth between KC and the Detroit metropolitan area, Eminem and his mother moved into the Eastside of Detroit when he was 12. Switching schools every two to three months made it difficult to make friends, graduate and to stay out of trouble.

Rap, however, became Eminem's solace. Battling schoolmates in the lunchroom brought joy to what was otherwise a painful existence. Although he would later drop out of school and land several minimum-wage-paying, full-time jobs, his musical focus remained constant.
Eminem released his debut album, Infinite, in 1996. Desperate to be embraced by the Motor City's hip-hop scene, Eminem rapped in such a manner that he was accused of sounding like Nas and AZ.

"Infinite was me trying to figure out how I wanted my rap style to be, how I wanted to sound on the mic and present myself," he recalls. "It was a growing stage. I felt like Infinite was like a demo that just got pressed up."

After being thoroughly disappointed and hurt by the response Infinite received, Eminem began working on what would later become the Slim Shady EP -- a project he made for himself. Featuring several scathing lines about local music industry personalities as well as devious rants about life in general, the set quickly caught the ear of hip-hop's difficult-to-please underground.

"I had nothing to lose, but something to gain," Eminem says of that point in his life. "If I made an album for me and it was to my satisfaction, then I succeeded. If I didn't, then my producers were going to give up on the whole rap thing we were doing. I made some sh*t that I wanted to hear. The Slim Shady EP, I lashed out on everybody who talked sh*t about me."

By presenting himself as himself, Eminem and his career took off. Soon after giving the Rap Coalition's Wendy Day a copy of the Infinite album at a chance meeting, she helped the aspiring lyrical gymnast secure a spot at the Coalition’s 1997 Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, where he won second place in the freestyle competition. During the trip, Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg, gave a few people from Interscope Records his demo and he made his major radio debut on the world famous Wake Up Show with Sway and Tech. Realizing that this was the opportunity of his lifetime, Eminem delivered a furious medley of lyrics that wowed his hosts and radio audience alike.

"I felt like it's my time to shine," Eminem says of that performance. "I have to rip this. At that time, I felt that it was a life or death situation."

Eminem would soon record the underground classic "5 Star Generals." This record helped establish him in Japan, New York and Los Angeles. It also helped him earn a spot on the inaugural Lyricist Lounge tour, which took him to stages from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.

Set to take the hip-hop world by storm with his unique lyrical approach and punishing production, Eminem and his The Slim Shady LP are sure to have listeners captivated.
"I do say things that I think will shock people," he says. "But I don't do things to shock people. I'm not trying to be the next Tupac, but I don't know how long I'm going to be on this planet. So while I'm here, I might as well make the most of it."

Simpson lated suggested, "Maybe they were booing at me, maybe they were booing at the halftime show 'cause the whole thing sucked," she said. "I was facing [the Oklahoma Sooners], and I was rooting for USC, and they played a clip of it, so maybe it was that those people didn't like me. You never know. But I can't make everybody happy."

evanescence (ev'e-nes'ens ): a dissipation or disappearance like vapor

Although the band's name may suggest a sudden vanishing, the music of Evanescence is poised for longevity. Fallen, the Wind-up Records debut of this talented quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas, is an emotional, ethereal work of undeniable potency guided by the heavenly vocals of Amy Lee. "We're definitely a rock band," says the 20-year-old Lee. "But the twist is that the band's music is epic, dramatic, dark rock."

Co-founders Lee and guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody met while in their early teens. "We were at a youth camp," Moody recalls. "During some sort of recreational period held in a gymnasium, I heard Amy playing Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything for Love' at the piano. So I went over to meet her, and she started singing for me. I was pretty much blown away, so I suckered her into joining a band with me." Since that day, the musical relationship has remained dependably loyal. "We have the same exact vision regarding what we love about music," Moody says. "When it comes to songwriting, we finish each other's thoughts."

Evanescence first took shape in Little Rock at the end of the '90s. Predictably, the band didn't quite fit the mold of most others lingering around the Midwestern state. "It's typically death metal or really soft, older-people music there," says Lee. "I don't even know of any local bands that have female singers."

Influenced by a wide-ranging collection of artists such as Björk, Danny Elfman and Tori Amos, the band started releasing EPs of its material. Even without the benefit of live performances, Evanescence began to establish a reputation.

"A lot of it developed by being elusive," Moody remembers. "The second song we ever wrote was this seven-minute, ridiculous Goth anthem called 'Understanding.' And for some reason, the local rock station decided to play it a lot. We gained this popularity around town, even though no one knew who we were or where to find us. It was because we could never afford to play a show -- it was just Amy and I -- and we couldn't pay any musicians."

Fallen was tracked in Los Angeles with producer Dave Fortman (BOYSETSFIRE, Superjoint Ritual). The album successfully finds that intangible balance between lush beauty and primal heaviness. Typical of the record is the first single, "Bring Me To Life," a piano ballad-turned-riff-driven barnburner. Highlighted by a guest vocal from Paul McCoy of 12 Stones, the song is featured prominently in the Daredevil film and soundtrack.

"'Bring Me To Life' is about discovering something or someone that awakens a feeling inside them that they've never had before," says Moody. He continued, "You discover there is a world that is bigger than just your safe bubble." Also significant is the vibrant anthem "Tourniquet" and the eerie "Haunted," with its pummeling beats and jarring melodies (augmented by chamber choir arrangements courtesy of Lee). Of the latter, Moody asserts, "It's the song that is the most 'us'. That best sums up what we strive to sound like."

Lyrically, Evanescence explores dark, introspective themes of love, desperation, and despair. But the group insists its fundamental message is a positive one. "The point of this whole record and band is to let people know that they're not alone in dealing with bad feelings or pain or anything that they go through," says Lee, who pens most of the words. "That's life and that's human. They're not alone, and we're going through it, too."

Live, Evanescence functions as a quartet with John LeCompt (guitar) and Rocky Gray (drums) rounding out the line-up. "As a four-piece, we are able to carry out the intricate harmonies and orchestrations of the memorable material on Fallen," Moody emphasizes. "We're very sincere about what we do. There's so much pre-packaged teen angst these days in music. That's not us. We're not trying to sell an angle, we're just here writing from our heart."

Green Day in Las Vegas
 GREEN DAY PRESENTS AMERICAN IDIOT
Band To Perform Ground Breaking Punk Rock Opera In Las Vegas

November 2, 2004 (Burbank, CA) - One of "the most influential bands of their generation" (Entertainment Weekly), Green Day, will perform their latest album American Idiot in its entirety at the Joint in Las Vegas on December 7th.

Musically aggressive and lyrically ambitious, American Idiot is a "truly great rock opera" (Rolling Stone). Part victim of circumstance and part victim of political climate, American Idiot follows Jesus of Suburbia through his confusion, alienation and disillusionment, while fueling that "rocking out in front of a mirror when you're 15" energy Green Day are famous for.

American Idiot debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, and topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Australia. The title-track from the album quickly climbed to #1 on the Modern Rock Chart and is Top 5 at Active Rock. MTV.com premiered the album with THE LEAK, both MTV and MTV2 deemed the video Buzzworthy and Green Day dropped by TRL on November 1st. The band has scheduled performances on Vh1's Big In 2004 on December 5th and the Billboard Music Awards on December 8th. They are currently touring the United States with New Found Glory and Sugarcult.

GREEN DAY DEBUTS AT NUMBER ONE AROUND THE WORLD
American Idiot "Most Important Rock Album Of the Year"
American Idiot, the long-awaited new album from Green Day on Reprise Records, debuted today in the United States at Number 1 on Billboard Magazine's Album Charts scanning 270,000 units. The album also debuted at the top of the charts in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Australia.

The epochal trio's first new album since 2000's Warning, American Idiot contains the group's new single/title-track as well as "Jesus Of Suburbia," a mini-rock opera that features such new originals as "I Don't Care," "City of the Damned," "Dearly Beloved" and "Tales From Another Broken Home."

Since it's release, "American Idiot" has also shot to Number One on the Modern Rock Chart and Top 10 on the Rock Chart in the US and continues to receive heavy airplay in territories spanning the globe. It has been deemed Buzzworthy by MTV; Artist of the Month on Launch, the music destination of Yahoo!; and Green Day has received extensive media attention in both the alternative and mainstream press, gracing the covers of magazines such as Alternative Press, Spin, Kerrang, Guitar World, Bass Player and Drum. Upon release of the album, Newsweek called American Idiot "one of the best rock albums and the biggest surprise of the year." The band performed "American Idiot" on the Late Show with David Letterman on September 20th with special guest, Senator John Kerry and recorded Sessions@AOL, to also be aired later this month on Fuse.

These chart positions around the globe mark the first time the band has debuted at Number One in the UK, Australia and Japan. To date the album has sold in excess of 1,000,000 units worldwide and climbing. In one short week, American Idiot has been certified Platinum in Canada and Japan and Gold in the UK, Ireland, Australia and Indonesia.

Green Day will kick off the US leg of their world tour on October 19th in Ft. Worth, TX at the Convention Center and will tour Europe, Australia and Asia in 2005. Tour dates to follow.

BIOGRAPHY

Let's say that you are one of the biggest selling female groups, ever. Your combined record sales total over 40 million records, worldwide. You've seen your albums debut at the top of the charts, and stay there. You've racked up enumerable industry awards, accolades and platinum or gold records. Not only is your group successful, but its individual members have all had superlative solo achievements and as a result you that collectively and on your own, you are what modern female pop/R&B is meant to sound, feel and sell like. How do you possibly attempt match, much less top, your impressive statistics?

When you're Destiny's Child, the answer's easy. You see your past as a guide to your potential and seize the future with the most compelling music of your career. In short, you fulfill your destiny.

Destiny Fulfilled is Destiny's Child's sixth album. Filled with soaring harmonies, rich with rhythm and nuance and brimming with a passionate, purposeful style that is quintessentially their own, Destiny Fulfilled is not only the strongest album of the group's career: it is the album they were destined to make.

Destiny Fulfilled is executive produced by Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams & Mathew Knowles. Beyonce is the key producer of all the album's tracks and the record's musical concepts and vocal arrangements are the result of her artistic vision. Her tireless work ethic and attention to studio details have created the masterfully seamless flow, boundless energy and exquisite polish of Destiny Fulfilled.

Listening to Destiny Fulfilled, you are immediately struck by Destiny's Child growth as singers, songwriters, artists and women. Destiny Fulfilled is markedly more mature and focused, reflecting Beyonce's, Kelly's and Michelle's emotional development while mirroring their true-life experiences.

"You hear our vulnerability," Beyonce offers. "We've always had strong songs that encouraged women and you still hear that this time, but you will also hear our weaknesses: the crying, the laughter, the friendship. The song on this album are far more layered and involved because we have the tools to talk about a lot more, because we're older and have experienced a lot more than we did when we were teenagers."

While Destiny Fulfilled might surprise some long time fans with its breadth and depth, it is also an album that many of those same fans thought might never see the light of day. After all it's been three years since 2001'survivor, and as any one can tell you, three years away from the game can be a lifetime. In addition, during the group's hiatus, each of the ladies embarked on solo projects. Yet after all those individual accomplishments, Destiny's Child are back on the charts; putting all those rumors to rest.

"We always said we were going to do solo records after Survivor and then come back and do another record," Kelly explains, referring to DC's game plan. "We've maintained our friendship and supported each other's projects and enjoy each other," Beyonce continues. "We wanted to do another record. I know we have a lot of fans that want to hear it and, more importantly, we wanted to do it because we love this collaboration. It was important for us to do our own things, so that we'd have the opportunity to grow and see what we could do on our own. It's really beautiful to do that and then also have the opportunity to come back together and have the fun we have when we are together. When you have that sort of friendship, recording doesn't feel like work."

Acknowledging that in the past some listeners might not have been completely aware of the extent of Kelly and Michelle's contributions to the group's music, Beyonce points out that solo projects offered each of them a platform to establish a personal musical identity. When it came time to record Destiny Fulfilled, she explains that "as the vocal producer, my main job was to let people know how beautiful Kelly and Michelle sound and how talented they are. It's amazing that we have a group with three women who are singers. Not dancers but singers. Our solo projects and now this album prove once and for all what we already knew: that every woman in this group can stand on her own."

Destiny Fulfilled encompasses a wide array of sonic influences from the lush orchestration of Philly soul to club-savvy crunk to contemporary gospel. Vocally the group looked to "the true hard R&B singers (like Jodeci and SWV) for inspiration. When it comes to the harmonies and arrangements we really challenged ourselves and did things we've never done before,"Kelly observes.

One of the biggest challenges came in the form of Destiny Fulfilled's thematic approach. More than a collection of songs, Destiny Fulfilled is as tony of a woman's journey through the highs and lows of falling in and out of love. Unfolding chapter by chapter, the story begins with the propulsive and sexually charged "Lose My Breath," which reunites Destiny's Child with longtime friend and collaborator Rodney Jerkins. "Working with Rodney again was wonderful," Michelle declares. "He came in with this new energy and this new sound."

"When we first heard 'Lose My Breath,' we were very excited because it was just so up-tempo and even the up-tempo songs these days aren't really that energized," Beyonce continues. "The beat reminded me of college football drumlines. It reminded me of childhood rhythms that made you wanna dance really hard which is where we got the title from, 'cause when you move like that you lose your breath."

Following the exhilaration of meeting the guy, the story segues into the rough and rugged "Soldier," produced by Rich Harrison and featuring LilWayne and T.I. If "Lose My Breath" captures the first rush of lust, then the down and dirty south grooves of "Soldier" breaks things down to a woman's expectations and the undeniable fact that she needs a soldier to protect her. From "Soldier" comes the vulnerability and naked devotion expressed in the Jerkins-produced "Cater 2 U." With lines like, "Let me help you take off your shoes/ let me feed you whatever you desire," "Cater2 U" is about finding that special "soldier" and doing everything you canto please him. Quite a shift from "Independent Woman"! "Yeah we're showing our softer side," agrees Kelly. "I know some people will be shocked by that song but it's about doing these things for your man only if he's really worthy of them."

From that heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment, Destiny Fulfilled then takes the listener on an intimate trip as the protagonist lusts over her lover (the frankly sensual "T Shirt"), begins to wonder if her man is doing her wrong (in the 70's soul-influenced "Is She The Reason"), realizes that she's not afraid to let him know she's over him, that moment when your girls rally behind you to give you support (the mid-tempo anthem "Girl"), then on to"Bad Habit," produced by Bryan Michael Cox with all the emotion that let's you know that man could be an addiction and features Kelly Rowland on lead vocals to (the soaring, Rockwilder-produced "If"), experiences there signation of giving up (the cascading, emotional "Through With Love,"featuring, and produced by, Mario Winans), and then finally reaches the point when she's finally able to find real love, witnessed by the inspirational "Love," the first non-gospel production from Michelle's brother, Erron Williams.

According to Beyonce , "'Love' concludes the story, because we find the love we've always had with God. That's the destiny that's been fulfilled because the woman is searching for love and eventually she finds it in God and herself and because of that she can eventually find love with a man."

In an unusual move, Destiny's Child allotted a scant three weeks for recording, banning anyone not involved with integral creative support from the studio. "We've never worked that way before," admits Michelle, "but it became yet another challenge. I think having such a brief time (to record) really forced us to focus." Not that things were all work and no play. As Kelly tells it," As soon as we got back into the studio we all just started running our mouths, catching up, having fun. There is nothing like the support of Beyonce and Michelle."

After completing work on Survivor (which won the Best R&B Performance By A Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy) and 8 Days of Christmas in 2001, Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle each took some time to explore their individual identities in a series of highly-successful solo projects.

In April 2002, Michelle Williams became the first member of Destiny's Child to have a solo project released. Heart To Yours, Michelle's contemporary gospel collection, reached #1 on the Top Gospel Albums chart. Michelle's second gospel album, Do You Know reached the #2 slot on the Top Christian Album chart and #3 on the Top Gospel Albums chart shortly after its release in January 2004. A re-release of Do You Know, featuring two new bonus tracks, is slated for release in December 2004. Michelle earned rave reviews after replacing Toni Braxton in the lead role of "Aida" on Broadway in November 2003.

Released in October 2002, Kelly Rowland's solo debut, Simply Deep featured the #1 Billboard Hot 100 smash hit, "Dilemma," Kelly's Grammy-winning (Best Rap/Sung Collaboration) duet with hip-hop superstar Nelly. The album became an international smash, hitting the #1 slot on the UK and several other countries' album charts while peaking in the states at #3 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart. Simply Deep

Beyonce's burgeoning career as an actress began in 2001 with the lead role in the MTV film "Carmen: A Hip Hopera." She displayed her comedic prowess as "Foxxy Cleopatra" in 2002's "Austin Powers In Gold member," starring Mike Myers. She starred opposite Cuba Gooding, Jr., in 2003's "The Fighting Temptations." Her latest film project is a prequel to "The Pink Panther,"starring Steve Martin as "Inspector Clouseau" and Beyonce as "Xania."

Beyonce toured America for the first time as a solo artist in support of her #1 multi-platinum debut solo album, Dangerously In Love, which earned her five 2004 Grammy Awards including Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best&B Song for "Crazy In Love," her smash single featuring Jay-Z. With her five Grammy win, Beyonce tied the record set by Lauryn Hill in 1999--and later tied by Alicia Keys (2001) and Norah Jones (2002)--for the most Grammys to be won in a single year by a female artist.

Working apart from each other gave the members of Destiny's Child a new-found appreciation of what each of them brings to the group and that support, love, confidence and maturity is clearly evident throughout Destiny Fulfilled's moving and soulful songs.

Asked what they hope their millions of fans around the globe will get from this most personal of projects and Beyonce speaks from the heart: "We want this album to be timeless and set a new standard. Even though it would be great to sell a lot of records, our goal is already accomplished by making this album. Hopefully coming back together again will inspire other groups to support each other, be happy for each other, and to let people know it's alright to go out on your own but it's also alright to come back together."

Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle have used the lessons learned during their own solo excursions to create the most unified and powerful Destiny's Child album to-date. With Destiny Fulfilled, the group delivers on the promise of its earlier recordings to breathe new fire into the worlds of contemporary pop and R&B music.

10: Kelly Clarkson

Who would have guessed that small town sweetheart Kelly Clarkson would eventually grow up and become one of America's brightest stars?

Certainly, not Kelly!

As a child growing up in Burleson, Texas, singing was far from her choice career.

Kelly wanted to become a marine biologist.

Lucky for the rest of the world, she quickly changed her mind upon seeing "Jaws," because it was only a matter of time before her true talent and passion were unveiled for the rest of the world to see.

Kelly's innate singing ability was first discovered in 7th grade after her junior high choral director heard her singing in the school hallway and encouraged her to sign up for the school choir. Up until that point, Kelly was considering joining the band!

Kelly immersed herself in choral activities throughout high school, starring in musicals ("Brigadoon"), performing overseas, and earning top honors as a member of the Texas All-State Choir.

Upon graduation, Kelly solidified her commitment to music, working numerous jobs to finance her demo CD and market herself to record labels. Frustrated with the lack of results and unopened mail, she made her way to Los Angeles along with a friend, hoping for the best.

While in L.A., she found odd jobs to help make ends meet and wound up getting a role as an extra on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch".

After answering a newspaper ad, she coincidentally hooked up with famed songwriter Gerry Goffin (("You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman") through a mutual friend and began recording vocal demos of his songs. Little did Kelly know that the same song Goffin was famous for, would later provide her with a moment of clarity as she worked to achieve her dream.

Kelly's stay in Los Angeles was tragically cut short after Goffin grew ill, her apartment burned down, and her car got towed. Both emotionally and financially, Kelly was drained.

She turned home to recuperate and reenergize herself before heading back to L.A. Shortly thereafter, her best friend, Jessica, presented her with paperwork for American Idol, FOX Television's national talent search competition/television show.

Already jaded from an earlier stint on the WB's "Popstars", Kelly was semi-reluctant, but signed the paperwork and went to the audition, hoping for the best.

Before you could say "You're going to Hollywood," Kelly was there.

After dozens of auditions, she found herself center stage, among the top 30 contestants, and live on national television.

Belting out an energized rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Respect," she captured the hearts (and votes) of people from all over the United States and advanced to the top 10 finals.

Week after week, Kelly quietly gained ground, rising above the competition, enduring a whirlwind promotional calendar, in addition to the responsibility of preparing live performances every week.

She was later provided with moment of clarity toward the middle of the competition.

When asked what the greatest thing to come out of the American Idol experience was, Kelly said, "The best moment for me was when I realized that I actually really wanted this. This is a public life now, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to do that part of it...The defining point was during my performance of "Natural Woman." I was on stage and the crowd was just going crazy, and I was like, I think I can do this."

It may have taken Kelly a while to realize that she could handle it, but the American public showed no hesitation in casting their votes and naming Kelly Clarkson their American Idol on September 4, 2002.

Moments later, she took to the stage for an emotional performance of her first single, "A Moment Like This," capping off the competition and reminding millions of viewers why they tuned into the show week after week--to watch people's dreams come true: "Oh I can't believe it's happening to me/Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this."

On October 5, 2002, "A Moment Like This," shot straight from No. 52 to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, eclipsing the 38-year record of "biggest leap to No. 1," previously held by the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love," which went from No. 27 to No. 1 in 1964.

Kelly soon set out on a tour with the other Top 10 finalists from American Idol and admirably conquered 30 cities in just 40 days. As soon as the tour ended, Kelly headed home so that Burleson, Texas could honor their rising star.

In January, after returning home for the holidays, Kelly embarked on another journey - the filming of her first feature film. The romantic/comedy musical, "From Justin to Kelly" was shot in South Florida (Miami Beach) in just six weeks. Upon wrapping the filming process, Kelly followed her heart to the studio to finish recording her debut album.

Her full-length solo album, "Thankful", debuted on April 15, 2003, and premiered in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. As she returned to the American Idol stage to pass over her crown to the next season's winner, Kelly was surprised with an RIAA certification plaque, awarding her album with Platinum status. "Thankful" had sold 1.3 million copies in less than 5 weeks of sales.

Kelly experienced success on the rise in the months following the release of her album. Her first single off of "Thankful", "Miss Independent", soared to the top of every chart in the country, helping Kelly reach new heights. Her song held onto the No. 1 spot for six straight weeks, breaking the previous 2003 record. The video for this single also ran a strong course by clenching the No. 1 spot in many countries and retiring its stay on MTV's fan-driven countdown, Total Request Live. Along with the success of her album and her single, Kelly was named the newest spokeswoman for "Candies" brand shoes, for which she appeared in numerous magazine campaigns in the Fall season of 2003. To add to Kelly's amazing summer, she was presented with the "Choice Female Artist" award at the 2003 Teen Choice Awards and debuted her next hit, "Low".

Kelly also succeeded in completing her first solo tour, which consisted of 8 stops in the Midwestern United States. As soon as she wrapped her tour, she appeared at the MTV VMA's as a triple nominee and presenter. She also honorably performed at the 2003 Latin Grammy Awards just prior to heading overseas to set forth on a promotional tour in several countries, including Germany, Spain, Singapore, Australia, etc., where fans welcomed her with open and excited arms. Due to her promotional efforts in many countries, Kelly has graced International charts consistently with her singles and her album, and has also had 2 singles certified with Gold Certification in Australia.

With Kelly's popularity, who wouldn't want to invite her to perform on their show? Well, "American Dreams" surely wanted to - and they did. Kelly took on the role of Brenda Lee singing "Sweet Nothin's" on the second season premiere of the show, in which she even impressed Ms. Lee herself. Shortly thereafter, Kelly also received two nominations for Radio Music Awards and performed "Low" for the second time ever in the United States, causing the audience of her industry peers to rise to their feet to show their appreciation for her immense talent.

Kelly's third released single off of "Thankful" also served as the title track from the film "Love, Actually" starring Hugh Grant, which was released on November 7 in the United States. With this enormous honor, Kelly appeared at both the United States and United Kingdom premieres of the film and even performed live in the UK at the event. As if this wasn't a holiday gift in itself for her fans to find her voice escaping from the silver screen again, Kelly brought everyone more holiday joy when she appeared on the "American Idol Christmas Special", singing her two released Christmas songs, "My Grown-Up Christmas List" and "O' Holy Night". She also offered her a cappella rendition of "O' Holy Night" for the 71st Annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, in which she gave the most stellar and beautiful performance possible.

As if the year 2003 wasn't fulfilling enough for this humble and down-to-earth girl whom, just a year and a half earlier was striving just to be heard, the best and most exciting news of all came to Kelly and her fans on December 4, 2003. Kelly's name was listed as a 2004 GRAMMY NOMINEE in the category of "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for her smash hit song, "Miss Independent". Again, Kelly was humbled, honored, and to say the least, thrilled with this recognition for her work.

Kelly rounded out her year with RIAA Double Platinum Certification for "Thankful", Gold Certification for her "Miss Independent" DVD (released in November), a series of Jingle Ball Concerts, and a performance of "Natural Woman" on "World Idol" that made Americans burst with pride!

Kelly certainly faced the new year with huge steps in her career. On February 8, a night she has waited for her entire life came true - Kelly attended the Grammy Awards as a nominee. Looking beautiful and elegant, Kelly graced the red carpet with her mother on her arm, shining like a true star.

On February 24, 2004, she embarked on a journey throughout the United States on a 30-city tour (plus two solo stops as the headlining performer at Mid-March Texas rodeos) with co-headliner, Clay Aiken, by her side. This tour, named the "Independent" Tour, marked Kelly's first large-venue tour as a solo artist; an eagerly anticipated moment for the girl whose dreams continue to become reality.

As her first large venue tour reached its end, Kelly returned to the studio to record a brand new single, "Breakaway", for the soundtrack of the Walt Disney movie "The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement", as well as her much awaited sophomore album, also titled "Breakaway", due out on November 30, 2004. The single, "Breakaway", went on to top charts all over the United States, including Radio & Records, Rick Dees Weekly Top 40, Mediabase 24/7, and more. It also surpassed all expectations when the song topped "Miss Independent" as "Breakaway" moved past #9 ("Miss Independent's" peak position) on the Billboard Hot 100.

In addition to Kelly's hectic recording schedule, which allowed her to work with such people as Ben Moody and David Hodges (previously from the band Evanescence), as well as popular songwriters Chantal Kreviazuk and Kara DioGuardi, she made appearances at several prestigious events. Such events included the World Music Awards where she announced a performance, as well as the American Music Award Nomination Announcements where she joined Dick Clark and Nick Lachey to announce the 2004 nominees.

Nearing the end of 2004, perhaps one of the most buzzworthy events Kelly appeared at was the 5th Annual Lifetime Women Rock concert which benefits Breast Cancer. Kelly, along with several other female performers, graced the stage to celebrate women, as well as support a very worthy cause. On this night Kelly proved herself once again, not only to fans, but to fellow artists such as En Vogue who were later quoted as making Kelly the first ever honorary member of their group and offering her an open invitation to perform with them anytime.

On November 30, 2004, fans hit the stores as Kelly's sophomore album, "Breakaway", hit the shelves. This album shipped Platinum, and in the first week of sales, Kelly topped the predicted number of albums sold by moving over 250,000 units, debuting at #3 on the Billboard Chart.

A series of No. 1 songs, a No. 1 album, numerous award nominations, endless recognition from those in the industry, legions of fans nationally and internationally, and an inner-drive that is unparalleled - Kelly Clarkson is unstoppable.
