We at KeyStone Canine are not new to the Dogue de Bordeaux. We got our first Dogue de Bordeaux as a small puppy, in February of 1997 and researched the breed for about a year prior to that.
Dogue de Bordeaux have a low prey drive and take well to other family pets, so that was good news for us, since we had 2 cats at the time. Our dogues have always been raised around cats. The cats and dogs get along well as you can see from some of the pictures on our site.
We fell in love with the breed from day one and have been in love ever since.
We are picky about what dogues we breed. We are working toward a particular look and characteristics, using the FCI breed standard as a guide. We don't chase after popular kennel names or Championship blood lines blindly, without considering the details of the breeding program and pedigree used to produce that dogue.
For us the pedigree is one of the most important things to look at before purchasing a pup/dog. A pedigree lays out the breeding program that was used to produce the pup/dog and reveals the quality of that breeding program and in turn the quality of the pup/dog produced from it. The measure of the breeding program used and the excellence of the dogues in the pedigree, tell you a lot about the quality of dogue you are purchasing. A superior dogue will be produced from a quality sire & dam and the pedigree will be made up of many outstanding dogues that conform to the breed standard.
Our first goal is to produce healthy dogues. We care for them in such a way, as to maintain that health. We want our dogues to enjoy life with us as long as possible.
Our secondary goal is to improve the Dogue de Bordeaux in every way, continually comparing the dogue to the FCI breed standard. We breed to preserve and to enhance the characteristics that make our breed unique. In short we breed to improve. We are working toward this goal by only breeding dogues that fall within the breed standard AND that compliment each other.
Our final goal is to strengthen the Dogue de Bordeaux genetically, by observing and researching the pedigrees of the dogues we breed together.
The defining elements of a Dogue de Bordeaux should be conformation to standard, good health and long life. Upon these three pillars we build our breeding program.
We love each of our dogues greatly and respect them as members of the family. We hope our breeding program and adoption process reflects that. All that we do, is done with their best interest, the interest of their offspring and the breed as a whole in mind.
