Dear FatherI am sorry you were not able to join Mother in accompanying Zil and myself to the University. I do wish the congressional committees were a little more flexible with their session times. Hopefully you will be able to come to visit soon, as I am certain you will enjoy the campus.
You have spoken often of your time at University with your cousins, of the beauty of the campus, and of how it was a most amazing growth and learning experience for you.
I hope that my time at college is as enjoyable and enlightening as yours. Not that I expect to encounter any difficulties here; both Zil and myself placed quite high in our class upon graduation, so we are well prepared for the classwork. But one never knows which way the tides of fate will push you. There is one... other... reason I wish you had been able to accompany us...
Mother became a bit... emotional when it came time for us to part so I could find my room in the dormitory (I have one of the few single rooms there) and get settled in. I assured her that everything would be all right, that I would call, and that Zil and I would be back for everyone's birthdays. It would be just like when Zil and I were going to Baskerville Preparatory, except that we would not be coming home after class. Mother was just starting to look a little relieved when...
A very enthusiastic (and very endowed) member of the student body decided to express his excitement towards the new school year by dashing past my dormitory. I am certain that Mother now thinks she has abandoned her children to a den of iniquity; she stared at my inappropriately dressed classmate for several long seconds
I am staying in what is known as Pepper House at L'Academy. It is the men's dormitory; Zil is staying in the women's dormitory across the street. In the campus directory, Pepper House is listed under its full name: L'Maison pour Petits Garcons.L'Academy -- Pepper House included -- has a very classic, old world look to its architecture. Understandable, as it is one of the oldest universities in the Baskerville area. I am certain that, when you visit, you will find many of the buildings look similar to those in your own alma mater.Shortly after Mother left, several familiar faces arrived from orientation to claim their rooms. Although I am excited to see what new faces will be moving into Pepper House, it is good to have some friends about as well. Let me update you on who from Baskerville is here at L'Academy with me.
Adam Ambrose is the younger brother of Zil's friend Angel. He graduated from school a year early to attend university with his sister and cousins. He is staying in one of the single rooms in the dormitory.
Eros Sol is Adam's cousin; Adam's mother is Eros' aunt Crocus. I know you and Mother are acquainted with the Sols, as I can recall attending several of their parties as a child. He has the last single room in the dormitory; he says he needs his own room 'for when the ladies are over'.
Cousin Martine is here as well. He told me he feels a little awkward among so many strangers, especially since he is not from the area. I assured him that once he became acquainted with everyone, he would feel right at home.
Cousin Martine is rooming with Charlie Carlson, who is the boyfriend of Daffodil Crockitt, Zil's good friend. Because Charlie attended a different private school in Baskerville (St. Evinrude's), I had not met him until a few days ago, when Daffodil introduced us. He seems quite the good egg, and is very energized about everything he does.I am still settings into my new residence, and classes begin tomorrow, so I need to be wrapping this letter up. I hope your committee meeting went well Father; no doubt with your knowledgeable voice lent to the issue at hand, they could not refuse the additional funds to your group. I am certain there is a birthday or two approaching soon. Please let Zil and I know so we can be in attendance. With love, your son
Oleksandr
Dear Papá
I am sad that you were not able to join Mamá in coming to University with Alek and I for our orientation. I do understand that you have a very great responsibility as a protector of those creatures which cannot speak for themselves, and you have always impressed upon us how important it is for us to uphold our responsibilities.
I just hope that at some point, someone recognizes the sacrifices you have made to hold up your responsibilities. I very much wished that you could have been there with us. I think Mamá was also sad that you were here to "see our little girl all grown up", to quote what she sniffled at me.She tried very hard not to cry, although we both sniffled quite a bit. It is sad to be leaving home and family, but there is so much to be excited about as well, so I was not sad for long.I am sure you and Mamá both felt the same way, when you arrived for your first day on campus. It is somewhat scary, the concept of living away from home for the first time, but yet there is so much to be excited and enthused about. So many new places to go, new things to see.
The university cheerleader seemed a living embodiment of this excitement, as she ran past us shouting "Vo Gerbits!" Mamá muttered something about "At least this one has clothes on" as the girl passed us. I am not certain if she was referring to the cheerleaders from her time at college, or if I missed something while she was seeing Alek off.Mamá said good bye shortly after the cheerleader incident. She needed to make a couple appearances elsewhere in her congressional capacity and I am most certain she was eager to get back home to you. I needed to find my room and get settled as well.
I am staying in Petal House which is the mirror of Pepper House, Alek's dormitory. Petal House is the girl's dormitory, and "Petal" is derived from the building's official university name "L'Maison pour Petites Filles". It is right across from one of the university's parks. Having grown up on the shores of the spacious ocean, I am quite happy that to be living in a residence with open space so near by. I have a feeling I would feel stifled if there were buildings pressing close.
Not long after Mamá left, other residents of my dormitory began to arrive, several of whom are my friends. No doubt you know them from when they have visited, having accompanied myself or Alek home from class. My good friend Angel Ambrose and her cousin Aphrodite Sol are sharing the room next to mine. I was a bit taken aback by Aphrodite's apparel at first, until I remembered what Angel had told me a while ago about her cousins. It seems that her and Aphrodite's grandfather, Apollo, believed he was the deified spirit of the sun made mortal. To regain his rightful place in the heavens, it was his duty -- and the duty of his family -- to have one generation for every planetary body in our solar system. Or some crock along those lines. Angel thinks her grandfather was a bit touched, not just because of his odd story because of all the strange rules he laid down about naming and clothing and employment. I suppose if I were required to dress as the goddess of love, I might choose an outift like that, though I would be terribly embarrassed to wear it. Aphrodite... not so much.
Cousin Magda is sharing a room down the hall. She and Martine arrived a week ago and have been staying at the student union, waiting for the dormitories to open. She said that Martine is room in Pepper House, the same as Alek. She was quite excited to find out that she was already acquainted with her roommate...
Tina. Magda and Martine had encountered Tina several times when they were visiting; Tina is a friend of Alek's. From what Magda told me, Tina and Martine got a long quite well and kept up correspondence when they returned home. I am not quite sure what to be making of this news.
My good friend Daffodil Crockitt has the only other single room in the dorm. She is also a cousin to Angel (her father and Angel's father are brothers). She was hoping to get a room in Monfrom Hall, which is a co-ed dormitory, so she could be with her boyfriend Charlie. Charlie was assigned a room in Pepper Hall, however, so she decided to room with us in Petal.
My other roommates at Petal House are quite a varied lot, and I am very excited to see what sort of new friendships await. At the moment we are relaxing and getting to know one another. Classes start tomorrow, so I will probably turn in early to be certain I get plenty of sleep.Take care and give my love to everyone. Alek and I will be back for the next birthday or for holiday, whichever comes first.
Love
