That Piece of Net
This is a sad story with a happy ending. The net being exhibited by Ian is a cod-end, picked up by one of KJ's twin screws, passing Royal Sovereign enroute to Brixham for the 2005 Kings Cup. She was running late due to a series of storms blowing up Channel, which had forced her to shelter in the Medway for two days. She had 150nm to run to the Race Start and 28hrs in which to do it at 5 kts but was averaging 4.
Then she suddenly lost all power in the port engine. The decision was made to make for Sovereign Harbour just four miles due north of 'present position'. Once safely berthed Ian was contacted. He drove down, donned diving gear, put out the Alpha flag and went down. Within minutes he brought up the specimen shown above. The good news was that no damage was done to the boat.
