In the past, he used his skills only for killing but now wants to atone those sins by helping others. He uses his Sakabatou sword, a sword with a reversed blade. His strongest technique is the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki, which he learned from his master, Seijuro Hiko. Seijuro Hiko was the one who named Kenshin. Kenshin's real name was Shinta. His parents died of a disease and later he was sold off to some people. He was married once but accidentally killed his wife, Tomoe. Kenshin's famous word is "ORO?!!"

He hangs around the gang but mostly for food. He gambles a lot (his chances of winning are like one in a million) and he never pays for his meals (he puts it on a tab, a real big one). He has a real bad attitude, a total rebel, he even has the word bad in Japanese on the back of his shirt. He calls Kaoru the "Raccoon Girl", Megumi the "Fox Lady", and Misao-chan the "Weasel Girl". He has a strong sense of pride and has lots of inner and outer strength.

The old members of the Oniwa Banshu was killed by a  gatling gun. He swore revenge and tried to kill Kenshin to prove that the Oniwa Banshu was the strongest. Kenshin defeated him with his Amakakeru Ryu No Hirameki. After that, Aoshi was going on the positive side and realized that avenging his friends would be disgracing thier honor. He now spends most of this time meditating.
