The first team got turned over by Brentwood in the final match of the season.Details of this match is given in the tab above.Stats for the first team and total stats for this season will be placed on the club's notice board in due course.

The NCCL league table will be placed on the notice board once the remaing league games are completed; (We have played all our matches but other clubs have still to complete theirs).

The second team completed its season with a win over Upminster 5 (4-2). Stats for the team will be posted on the notice board. Details of the match etc can be seen in the tabs above.

Your attention is drawn to the new proposed membership fees by the ECF. These will replace the existing game fees and will no doubt have an effect on the amount of money we have to pay out as a club(web address of the ECF is given in links).

The Essex AGM is on the 26th of June (See calendar for details) where I expect how the new fees are to be implemented will be discussed.I would SUGGEST that a member of the committee attends and reports back to the club. Since the proposed arrangments will affect us, I also suggest that our AGM is held after the Essex AGM.

The NCCL played its final match of the season and lost again. it also played the final of the Finchly cup and lost that as well. Details of both matches can be seen in the reports sections above.

The first team failed to beat Ilford I,but it was a very close match, final score being 4.5 - 3.5 to Ilford.

Kevin won a double rook ending. Dave was a bit unluckly:- having a choice of two pieces to take, took the wrong one and fell to a combination that lost a piece. Oliver seemed to be playing a rapid play game that involved a lot of clock banging and was over in about 10 mins to produce a draw. Ken, playing an advance french defence somehow got a passed queen pawn that ended on b7 that was unstoppable to produced a win. Martin was just outplayed. Simon dispite his time advantage of 30mins due to a non arrival of his orginal opponent could only manage a draw. John got himself confused on how to hold his rook ending and lost. Gordon had a totally won ending but agreed a draw under time pressure. So now we stay in Division 2! (Martin,I thought you played Berlin:- The results from Essex show you played Kent. Can you confirm please.)

The Second team played Upminster 4 and had a good win in terms of the results. However some of the games were a bit on the lucky side. at least two of the draws were agreed in lost positions while one of winners played very badly and only got the win on time in a difficult ending that he had no need to get into. But a win is a win

Two results:- one unexpected and one unlucky. The NCCL team crashed to a weak Enfield 1st team: Ken gave up a knight and a pawn for a mating attack which did not quite work out and losted. Martin appeared to being winning for most of his game but settled for a draw in a double edge position. Simon played a stand in for the orginal listed Enfield player and won quickly. John gave away a piece and lost quickly. Ronnie also gave material and lost. The Board order of the Enfield team also looked a bit odd . we lost 3.5-1.5

The first team also lost but in this case the match could have gone either way. Kevin agreed a draw in a totally won position having less than a min. left on the clock. Oliver, Ken and Graham all lost. The remainer of the team settled for draws, some of which appeared to be winable. Final score 5.5-2.5 to Brentwood.

The first team can still win the divison if we win our last two matches and Wanstead II lose to ilford.

Finally Gordon beat Ronnie in the club championship

A bad result and a good result.

The 2nd team went to Southend and wished that they had not gone. we lost 4-2. The NCCl team on the other hand played to form and beat Enfield 2 4.5- 0.5 ( Martin being the one who drop the half point.) Oliver avoid an endgame by winning quickly.Ken went for two rooks against the queen and with the aid of a knight found a nice force mate in 6. Ronnie and Gordon brought in the remaining points.

Our first team continued with its run of good results by beating Ilford1 4.5-3.5. If (a big if) we win the remaining matches, we win the div. outright. A current div. 2 results table is given below

The match, in which on most boards we were outgraded, produced some interresting games. Oliver played an advance French as black where white misplayed a queen trap and then gave up a piece for a strong attack which did not quite work thus giving Oliver the point. Ken tried the same idea as white giving up a piece for the attack only to fall for a force mate in four. Graham, Simon and Brian got their draws while Kevin and John produced the required wins ( John had two rooks and several pawns against a king at the end). Gordon just fell by the wayside.

Our first team played Barking 2 and drew 4-4. Report on the match has been supplied by Martin:

A bad result for us, I'm afraid, as we significantly outgraded our opposition.However, this should seal our survival in the division, as it puts us on 6 pts from 5 matches. Barking are on 3 pts from 8 matches and would need to beat both Brentwood and Ilford to catch us.

The games as I saw them ...

Kevin: a solid win. Dave: looked like the chess equivalent of a 0-0 draw. Oliver: had his opponent under pressure in a position with lots of tactics, but couldn't quite break him. Ken: somehow went R for B down. Had a big time advantage and tried to complicate the game. Couldn't quite complicate it enough for this opponent, however. Graham: although very dependable, everybody has one bad game a season, and this was Graham's. Brian: (last to finish with the score tied) exchanged queen for two rooks and turned down multiple draw offers, only to agree a draw when the game almost slipped away from him. Simon: steered home a tight win under time pressure. John: managed the ending well to hang on for a draw, in a lost position, when his opponent ran out of time.

A few extra comments: Graham played a player with a 194 grade ( this grade is based on a few games, this player grade is likely to be about 150 when the season ends).

Brian agreed a draw in a winning position. Both players were short of time so the draw was a safe bet.

The first team finally started to play their matches.They kicked off by playing Wanstead 2. The top 5 boards obtained 4 points with no losses. This was offset by three losses on the lower boards, making the final score 4-4. Results pages etc updated.

The NCCL team, played Barnet 3 last night. Every one, apart from Martin, were outgraded:in Ronnie's case by 52 points! Drawing the match was a good result with Ronnie being the man of of the night by getting a draw after going a piece down!!!! And no we dont know how he did it.Simon got a rare win while Oliver and Ken got draws. Final score 2.5-2.5

All pages are now up to date and reflect the new grades where applicable.

The NCCL team crashed to a weak Wanstead:- lost 3.5-1.5 Oliver having a rare quick win dispite missing a simple win of a piece.

The members page has been updated for the new Jan. grades.

Note:- The NCCL games played since October have not been included in this listing. I assume they have not yet been submitted for grading. (Simon, you may like to query this with NCCL)

The NCCL team played Enfield1 at home. Fresh from his draw (in a county match) against the British under 10 champion, Simon continued his drawing ways to ensure we won the match 3-2. Full details in due course.

Head ache for our Essex captains (and poss. Simon). Brentwood has changed venues and its new clubnight is Tuesday.

This is a bit pf a pain for us as it means that three new matchs have to be fitted into the few tuesdays that are free for us. (Two against Brentwood and one against Chingford for the final of the Finchly Cup). Glad I'm not a match captain. See Essex Website for details of the Brentwood new venue.

Calender updated.

The club held its first R/P event on the 20th Dec. It was for members only and organised by Martin. It was run as an all play all 11 round event and apart from one minor hipcup went very well. Apart from one silly lost to Brian, Ken swept away the other players to win with 10 points out of a possible 11. For his efforts he was awarded a small digital clock (which he gave back later to the club). The shock result of the night was Mark beating Oliver.

Since the event went well, it is proposed that an other R/P Event would be held later in the season. A table of the results has been placed in the internal R/P TAB above

The NCCL team went to Chingford and came away with a nice win. Robie and Brian were not too happy with this result( they were playing for Chingford and they both lost) We won 3.5-1.5
