A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all

24-dec-09

Due to the adverse weather on the 21st, the match against enfield 2(NCL) wil be played on a later date.

22-dec-09

The NCL team took on Chingford 2 and lost 3-2. A disapointing result. All the team had good playable positions but apart from Ken failed to convert them into wins.

Oliver got an attack going then backed off and agreed a draw in a blocked position. Martin appeared to be getting the better of an endgame until he missed winning a pawn and ended up in a drawn position. John C.played well then made one careless move that cost him the game. Dave L.dropped a pawn but got his rooks active to create drawing chances. However He put his king on a wrong square which allowed his opponent to break through and win. Ken did a three move combination which resulted in a mate on the back rank.

Ronnie fell into a a three piece mate trap. The lost by Ken was due to a blunder that cost two rooks, the game and the match!

The first team went to Thurrock and most of the team arrived late due to the very heavy rain and roadworks on the M25. We did, however, achieved a positive result from the match and won 4.5 - 3.5

Oliver, Graham, John C, and Ken all won quickly. Robi and John R lost. Dave F. played a 205 and spent most of the night talking to his opponent after losing a short game. Martin obtained a piece for two pawns but agreed a draw to ensure that the match was won.

The first team took on Southend last night and obtained a somewhat unexpected result. Martin made some changes to his team which strengthen the lower boards. These changes resulted in the bottom four boards all winning. However the top four boards all lost! So back to the drawing board.

Dave, Oliver, Brian and Graham were all outplayed ( In Oliver's case, he was trying to play the black side of the advance variation against the Tarrasch in a French Defence which is not a good idea).

Martin had an exciting end to his game and did well to withstand a very strong attack to win on time. John R. found a very nice mate in 6 to win his game while Robi played soundly to outplayed his opponent. Ken picked up a piece early on and just grounded out a win.

Final score draw 4 - 4

The first team played Basildon last night. As they were a very strong team we did well, only losing the match 4.5 - 3.5. Dave F. lost a difficult ending with even material. Oliver totally outplayed his opponent while Graham won quickly, outplaying his opponent in the opening. Martin came second in an unclear middle game. John R. appear to be winning but was unable to covert it to a win and settled for a draw. John C. misplayed the opening and finally went under while Ian dropped a piece and lost. Ken gave up 3 pawns to win a queen and the game.

Friday the 13th; Not a good day for the 2nd team to go to Southend.:- wind, rain and one player going to the wrong venue ! Dispite all this, we won 4 -2 with some heart stopping moments. John R and John C agreed draws albeit in playable positions. Ian won a piece and the game. After Ian had won the knight, a move later both players failed to see that Ian's rook could be captured by a pawn! Dave on the other hand went for maxium use of his time and mated his opponent with 25 seconds left on his clock!!!!!!!! Ken just won quickly while Gordon, arriving late due to thinking we were playing Thurrock and went there first, was outplayed by his opponent and lost.

A busy week for the club. On Tuesday the NCL team could only get a draw against a weak Wanstead team at home. Oliver and Ken got the expected wins but were let down by the middle boards only getting an half point between them. Final score 2.5 - 2.5

The First team played its first match of the season on Thursday with its new captain, Martin in charge against Brentwood. It was a good match and we did well against a strong Brentwood side who outgraded us on all but one board. Dave F. and Graham got quick draws while Oliver won a rook and the game. Jonathan had a good attack but had to settle for a draw. Martin sacrificed a rook in a drawish position to obtain a pass pawn but it proved unsound and lost. John C. was just outplayed while Dave L. lost the exchange and was unable to hold the resulting endgame. Ken won an early pawn and dispite being on top for most of game was unable to convert it into a win. Final result 5 - 3 to Brentwood.

NCL TEAM V BARKING 2. We lost 3 -2 Ken won quickly then spend the rest of the night watching the rest of the team throwing won games away! Oliver agreed a draw only to find that he had an easy win of a knight. John C. having obtained 3 pawns for a knight failed to find the winning moves while Simon having gone a pawn up played safe and agreed a draw. Martin having played most of his game ensuring his pieces only played on his back two ranks, found the quickest way to lose what seemed a playable ending.
