Kell becomes British champ.

14th june 2008

Kell Brook underlined why he has been one of the most avoided fighters in the country as he captured the British welterweight title with a seventh round stoppage of Barrie Jones at London's York Hall,

Jones was halted on his feet by referee Mickey Vann in a fight which featured no knockdowns, but was being out-classed by his Sheffield rival.

In the previous two rounds, Brook had unloaded power shots without much in reply, and in the seventh a barrage of unanswered punches forced Vann to intervene.

Jones, who slipped to his second successive loss, finished the fight with his right eye closing, and cut a demoralised figure.

Immediately after his victory, Brook made a point of telling a watching Tony Doherty that he would receive the same treatment if the pair were to meet.

Doherty, who beat Jones on points, jumped into the ring and exchanged angry words with Brook's trainer Dave Coldwell before being ushered away by security.

Whether the Welshman will be next in line for Brook remains to be seen - former champion Kevin McIntyre will have a strong case for an immediate shot at the Yorkshireman.

McIntyre was stripped of the title in controversial circumstances before the fight after twice pulling out injured, and morally at least, has an argument for a crack at his old belt.

On this kind of form he'll find Brook, still only 22, a tough nut to crack, as he mixed shots from unorthodox angles with enough power to have Jones' head regularly snapping back.

It was difficult to believe this was his first championship fight, having only trained for eight rounds before - and never gone beyond six.

Initially schooled by Brendan Ingle, there's a little bit of Naseem Hamed in Brook, who like the Prince is also fond of corkscrew uppercuts and shots from unorthodox angles.

Jones was on the receiving end of all manner of punches, and deserves credit for the way he gamely stuck to his task, even when the fight was slipping away from him.

After the fight Brook, now 17-0 (10), said: "I'm so proud to win this belt. I can't wait to go home and show it to my mum.

"I've had so many opponents pull out in the past, but hopefully now I've got this title that won't happen.

"I'll defend it against anybody, whether it's McIntyre, Doherty, whoever they want me to."

He also praised Jones for his display.

"He's such a nice guy," said Brook. "Usually when you fight someone there's a bit of needle there, but it was difficult to have that with Barrie."

Kell challenges Jones for vacant title

6th June 2008

Unbeaten prospect Kell Brook will face Barrie Jones for the Vacant British Welterweight title at the York Hall on Saturday 14 June.

Brook, the mandatory challenger, was due to meet Kevin McIntyre but after the Scotsman withdrew from the fight for the second time citing an injury, the British Boxing Board of Control have declared the title vacant.

Sheffield star Brook believes that McIntyre was running scared of him.

"To me It is plain and simple that McIntyre never wanted to fight me in the first place so he should have just vacated the title and he wouldn't have wasted everyones time," stormed Brook.

"It's fantastic to be fighting for the Lonsdale belt that has been held by greats like Ted Kid Lewis, John H Stracey and Lloyd Honeyghan, but McIntyre's name doesn't deserve to be on that illustrious list.

"I'm confident that I would have knocked out McIntyre had we met but we will never know now.

Welshman Jones will give Brook a hard fight after he gave Tony Doherty a tough battle for the Welsh title in March.

"I'm delighted that a real fighter like Jones is going to be in the opposite corner fighting for the prestigious British title.

"I watched the fight against Doherty and I was really impressed by his heart and stamina, and he has shown that he is one of the top young fighters in Britain.

"It's going to be a great fight but after all the messing about with McIntyre I'm more determined than ever to win the title."

Talented Kell is a Champion in waiting.

3rd june 2008

Kell Brook's immediate future may not be crystal clear but one thing is certain: he will be a world champion one day.
That's the career assessment of the unbeaten Hillsborough powerhouse, by fellow boxer Paul Royston.

The Rotherham gym-mate has sparred with Brook and watched his progress long enough to feel certain he can go all the way.
But for the time being, not much else is certain in 22-year-old Brook's life.

First his planned attack on British welterweight champion Kevin McIn-tyre's title, planned for June 14, was called off, with his opponent complaining of a bad back.

It is the second time McIntyre has pulled out, leaving Brook utterly frustrated.

Then, his mentor and trainer Dave Coldwell announced on a new managerial link-up with David Haye and American promotional firm Golden Boy.

That will almost certainly impact on Brook because he is promoted and managed by Frank Warren's rival organisation.

They could pressure him to move away from Coldwell to a trainer with closer affiliations to Warren's Sports Network.

Coldwell hopes that won't happen.

Whatever arises, says Royston, Brook is destined for great things.

"I cannot explain how good he is. When I spar with him, he is so many leagues ahead that he could end the session whenever he wanted.

"Whichever direction his management takes him, he is world class and will become a champion."

Coldwell is hoping the British Board of Boxing Control will strip McIntyre of his title, so it can be fought for on a vacant basis.

Brook, who has recorded nine KOs in his 16 fight unbeaten run, has fought only once since last October.

Brook to face McIntyre for title.

13th March 2008.

Unbeaten Kell Brook has landed a crack at the British welterweight title against Kevin McIntyre.

The 21-year-old Yorkshireman boxes at the CIA on March 22 in an eight rounder.

And he'll now be treating it as a warm up for a crack at Scotsman McIntyre.

The British Boxing Board of Control ordered purse bids for the fight today.

The showdown must take place before the end of June.

Brook, undefeated in 15 fights with eight stoppages, has long been waiting for a title opportunity.

He will face a stern challenge in McIntyre, who has twice beaten Kevin Anderson in British title fights.

The Paisley fighter has a 26-5 (8) record, but three of his defeats have come early, and one on a cut.

Kell set for British title fight.

1st Jan 2008

Kell Brook could become British champion by next summer.
The 21-year-old Sheffield welterweight has been named as mandatory challenger for the domestic honour by the Boxing Board of Control.

He expects to face the winner of a re-match between Kevin McIntyre and Kevin Anderson in the New Year.

McIntyre, 29, beat Anderson, a fellow Scot, 24, for the title north of the border, in November.

Anderson's camp has arranged a re-match in Glasgow, in February.

Meanwhile, the Board has obviously had sympathy for Brook; having seen the frustrated Sheffielder prepare for fights against Tony Doherty, John O'Donnell and Mark Thompson - and then witnessed them all pull for one reason or another.

Brook's trainer Dave Coldwell said: "Kell is delighted to have been named mandatory challenger. He's desperate to have a fight and isn't bothered which of these two opponents he meets.

"Whoever wins the McIntyre v Anderson re-match will have Kell to contend with by May.

"McIntyre is the champion and dominated Anderson last time. But Anderson is a puncher and is dangerous. Kell, though, believes the moment he wins the British belt is getting closer."

Hillsborough's Brook has a 15-fight unbeaten record but has yet to fight for a title.

Kell in Three.

8th April 2007.

Kell Brook scored the best win of his career over Cardiff-based Pole Karl David – but had to get off the floor to do so.

The Sheffield prospect was the victim of a flash knockdown in the first courtesy of a peach of an uppercut.

He briefly touched down and then had a few anxious moments as David – who had six first round stoppages on his 20-6 record – looked to cause a huge shock.

The “away” fighter was on top in the second as well, but in the third Brook settled in the third, and landed upward of 20 unanswered shots.

Eventually referee Roddy Evans decided that he had seen enough, stopping the fight with just two seconds of the third round remaining.

Brook moves to 14-0 with this win, and avoids a potential banana skin after David came in at short notice for Gary Young the Scottish prospect ruled out with ‘flu.

K9 bows out to Brook's disgust.

14th March 2007.

Sheffield's Kell Brook has lost out on world-wide TV exposure because an American opponent likened to a Pit Bull turned out to be a poodle!
American Cornelius Bundrage - nicknamed K9 - had been offered a match-up with the Hillsborough welterweight as part of the bill on The Contender - a reality US v UK TV competition which will be screened from Newcastle later this month.

Bundrage, 33, decided against Brook, who is unbeaten after 13 fights and is developing a reputation under promoter Frank Warren's banner and trainer Dave Coldwell's tutelage.

Instead Bundrage is to face older Scottish light middleweight champion Colin McNeil on March 30, instead.

Brook, 20, said: "I was gutted when I found out the fight with K9 was off.

"I had got the go-ahead from Frank and was really looking forward to competing on the Contender programme and getting on the telly. That sort of exposure would have been mind-blowing.

"But K9 ducked out on me - he obviously didn't want to see me put a muzzle on him!"

Brooks hasn't got long to be disappointed though. He has another big show to prepare for.

On April 7, he will be on the Joe Calzaghe undercard in Wales, taking on Gary Young, a 23-year-old southpaw who has 16 wins from 17 fights.

One of those wins was over Sheffield's Danny Thorpe.

"Young's style is that of a puncher boxer, but I will take him out when I go sharpshooting over three or four rounds" said Brook.

"Some people think its a 50-50 fight because of our records but my talent will see me through."

Coldwell added: "Kell has to focus on Young now, Bundrage won't be the last person to dodge Kell if they can."
