Family History
Lesley and I were both born and brought up in the Nottingham area, but my branch of the Stevenson family has its roots in Leicestershire.
Oddly enough, Lesley has ancestors called Stevenson who also lived in Leicestershire, but so far we have found no connection.
Several of the family were Chimney Sweeps in the village of Shepshed (or Sheepshed as it was then known) during the 19th century, and before then, like many of their contemporaries they were framework knitters.
The whole family would have been engaged in producing garments in their homes.
The work was hard, and they worked long hours for very little reward.
Going further back, the family moved to Shepshed from nearby Kegworth, and it it there that the trail goes cold.
If anyone has any information about Stevensons in Kegworth before 1800 please get in touch, I would love to know more about their life at that time.
