Hello,
Thank you for doing this whoever you are. This is me writing and I would like you to get the word out to my beloved students what happened yesterday (Monday).
At the end of school, Kim Brandt called me down to her office. She was with a person from the superintendent's office.
They told me that the students were being too distracted by the build up to me leaving on Thursday. She then said that it would be better if I left school and didn't come back so that the kids could return to normal.
I said that I didn't agree. I have done nothing wrong and that I would be staying until Thursday, especially as I had a good-bye message I wanted to read to the students at the end of school.
At that point, the person from the superintendent's office told me that this was now an order and that I had to return my laptop and keys and that I had a hour to pack up my personal belongings.
After a while he agreed that I could come back at 5:30 pm that afternoon to collect my stuff.
I was very upset as I wanted to leave in the right way and let the kids know how much I love them and how much I will miss them.
When I came back later with my wife, Scott Poulin, the MSAD 51 business manager was there to watch me and he even had a police officer there with him!!!!
What did he think I was going to do??? I was very insulted.
I love teaching and I love the students in this school. I certainly want everyone to know that I did not just walk away from them.
I would not be leaving teaching if Kim Brandt had not accused me of being cruel and demeaning to the students. She said that I didn't know how to treat kids and that I should go into a classroom and watch other teachers so that I could learn the right way to do it.
After 20 years of teaching, I think I can do the job pretty well, yet in my personal file, there is the letter from Kim Brandt saying how bad I am.
If anyone would like to write a letter explaining why I have been a good influence on them, I will request they are placed in my file alongside her letter. Certainly, that would be very helpful if I ever want to teach again in the future.
I really think the way the school is handling this is totally wrong. The students should have been able to say good-bye properly and so should I. I believe the only person who benefits from this is Kim Brandt herself as she has obviously been feeling the heat!
Any letters should be sent to my home address:
1043 Sawyer Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME. 04107.
That way, I can be sure they go into the right place and don't get thrown away.
Also, if there is a strong feeling, I would be happy to set up a meeting somewhere so that we can say our good-byes the right way.
I hope you can get the word out to kids. I can't find the website address as it was on my laptop, so if you could let me know, that would be great. Also, feel free to pass out my personal email too.
