Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) The Silent Killer
How often is someone told they should have no concerns of cancer because, cancer has no pain."
Breast cancer is something women think they know about. Most have mammograms, see their doctors, and check for lumps. None of this will save you from a silent breast cancer that most women know nothing about. It is called "inflammatory breast cancer ... IBC"
The National Cancer Institute reports IBC is an uncommon type of breast cancer in which cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast. The blockage may cause the breast to become red, swollen and warm to the touch. The skin of the breast may appear pink, purple or bruised. It may have ridges or looked similar to the skin of an orange. Another sign of the cancer is swollen lymph nodes under the arm or above the collarbone.
More often the tumor cannot be felt and may not be seen in a mammogram. Diagnosis of IBC is detected by a biopsy. IBC is the most aggressive form of breast cancer. It progresses rapidly. It is a silent breast cancer killer. More information regarding IBC is needed and will help women become more informed.
The easiest to remember is to be aware of any changes to the breast and to get them check out.
We are working to obtain funding for an exciting children's art program. Hopefully, it will be up and running by Spring of next year.
Leadership and community involvement are very important in making programs, events and activities a success. By taking some time away, we have been able to accomplish the three Rs: re-energize, review and relax. By restructuring some of our goals, we can now see ways to achieving programs which will benefit the community.
We have had the opportunity to take a look at our accomplishments and take pride in them.
Formation of additional organizations has helped residents enjoy new activities. The Sky Watchers' report has proved to be very popular. And those who took the walk along the Jordan River Parkway, were surprised to see how many variety of birds live within the area.
Although we are low on funding, we have been able to have two exhibits, our annual "Socks from Santa" program, our annual Easter basket contest, an entry in the Taste of Kearns, our annual beautification programs and several meetings to discuss future plans.
All in all, we can be very proud of our accomplishments. We are looking forward to many future exhibits, functions and events.
Come and join us in making Kearns a better place to live, work and play. See you soon!
Kearns' Art Council's Exhibit: Antique Aluminum Ware - "The Poor Man's Silver" proved to those who attended, that art may come in many different methods.. Thank you to those who attended the exhibit and to those who entered their vintage aluminum ware in the exhibit.

A tree planting ceremony to commemorate Arbor Day was held on Friday, April 27, at 6:00 pm. The tree (a blooming pear) was planted at the corner of 5415 South and 4000 West (the canon).
Our annual Kearns Neighborhood Pride Day was held on Saturday, April 28th. Our projects for this year included working on the areas near the railroad overpass and along Northwest Avenue. To those who joined us, many thanks! To Jason Curry (Utah Natural Resources) and Nancy White (Salt Lake County), thank you for the banners, gloves and garbage bags.

*Kearns Preservation Society is not affiliated with Kearns Historical Society (the word Historical has been removed from the Society's title so as to not be confused with the Kearns Historical Society).
Members of Kearns Preservation Society are very proud of a grant submitted in the spring of 2006 to the Salt Lake County ZAP board. The grant was to fund an open space park at the canal where one of the bridges leading to and from Camp Kearns is located. However, with the purchase of the property by a new owner, the application was pulled by the Preservation Society prior to the interview with the ZAP board. Efforts between the new owner and members will be going forward and the much needed open space location and site of historical significance will be completed sometime either this year or next.
This month's highlight is a dawn grouping of Venus, Saturn and Regulus. At dusk, Jupiter will sink low in the southwest. Mars rises later in the night.
The cresent moon will be very close to the grouping at just the right time.
Enjoy our fall skies. Check and see what is happening in our nighttime skies!
