MONKEY MOUNTAIN? (Look hard!)

A bit more of the Property

                 HEY! CANADA

Our "Twinning Cousins", members of the 38th B-P Guild, Canada.
They were all visiting Rick (in wheelchair) at the Rehab Centre.
Rick had recently been in a motorcycle accident

This report from Rob Hebden of their activity in early October at the G.F.Strong Rehab Centre.

We had our "special meeting" last Monday down at the G.F. Strong Rehab Center. What a hoot!! Fourteen members were able to attend. Prior to going downtown we met at the Celtic Times Pub to discuss carpooling and what badges to present and what to call them. Thanks Jean M for getting the sash and badges!

Ray, Jean, Joan and I were the first ones to get off the elevator on the second floor. What we saw was priceless!!! Rick was sitting in his wheel chair waiting by the doors and when he saw us he looked like a kid who just saw Santa Claus. He was beaming with excitement!!! Priceless!!

He said follow me and we did so down to the meeting room. He is able to control his chair by sucking and blowing on a tube to make the chair go forward, backward, turn right or left. He is no longer whispering. We could hear him across the room as he told us of his adventures / misadventures with his chair. I guess you could call him "Crash and Bash the Second". Cleaning off the bottom row of videos on the shelf in the TV room, hitting the shelving in Safeway, a block away during one of his outings, and getting tangled up with another wheel chair in the hospital. The techie downstairs in the hospital de-tuned his chair so he cannot go as fast as the others. It is kind of like having the big L on the back of a car.

Rick was proudly showing us how he could move his right hand and foot. With more therapy he will be able to use his joystick for maneuvering his chair using his right hand.

It was time to start the meeting. The meeting was brought to order, I asked if we had money in the bank, Yes, good enough for the financial report. I asked if we were having fun, the social committee said Yes, good enough for the social report. Jeff Burton put forward a motion to adjourn the meeting, all in favour, carried. I think the meeting lasted less than a minute.

We then presented Rick with a Scout sash. He is experiencing a new area of Scouting and he needs to have a place to put his achievement badges.

A Beaver white tail was presented as being a link badge from Vancouver General to G.F.Strong. In keeping with the adult theme during the evening it was presented as a piece of tail. There definitely was not a solemn ceremonial moment that evening.

Rick then received a "Beaver Sleep Over" badge for all his nights of camping out at Vancouver General and G.F. Strong.

Next there were two badges. These were for having the tube removed from his throat. "I Speak English" and "Je Parle Francais".

He then received a "Friendship" badge to represent all the help and kindness of the doctors, physio personnel, nurses.. THEN he confided in us that he had a discussion with a nurse who was coming back for a fourth time to get another blood sample for his sugar levels. He sort of mentioned that she could take the needle and -

Jean Crowther had embroidered a towel with the cub motto "Do You Best - Rick" which was presented by Ray. Thanks Jean!!

This impromptu ceremony was followed by cake and coffee. Thanks Emmy for the cake!! Rick passed on a piece of the cake, probably being concerned about his blood sugar. He mentioned that they push him hard in physio and he is pushing himself even harder. He has made a lot of headway since my last visit. I was really impressed. Rick is very up and motivated. Way to go Rick!!!

I was talking to Doug Lucas this evening and he mentioned that Rick indicated that the target for going home is January 29th BUT Rick is trying hard to shorten the time frame.

Doug also mentioned that there are a number of restaurants within a 4 block radius that accommodate wheel chairs from G.F. Strong and enjoy the business. Hmmmm, another opportunity to go out to supper. There are still lots of badges to present so we will have to have more "special meetings" or maybe a supper out.

Robin, if you need help with anything please let us know. We will be there to help.

Yours in fellowship,

Rob.
