German Kampfgruppen in WW2

A brief explanation of German Kampfgruppen:

German Kampfgruppen were formed from many different types of military units, banded together temporarily to perform a specific task. The units involved in the make-up of any Kampfgruppe could be from different divisions. Sometimes even punishment Battalions formed into KG's (such as in KG Solar and KG Porsch) were used.  It did not matter if the units meshed together were familiar with each other or not. All that mattered was that the units selected did the job that was required of them.

Some of these KG units became famous for their exploits, such as KG Scherer and their historic defense of Cholm, a vital land bridge between the Lovat and Kunya rivers from 21 Jan '42 thru 5 May '42. A total of 105 days entirely cut off from supplies/reinforcements by land with only a fraction of needed supplies arriving by air throughout this KG's existence.

This KG unit, which started out as a 3500 troop deployment and with additions from other surrounded units fighting there way into Cholm and from 1 way glider supply landings on an improvised airstrip doggedly defended the City's perimeter and even on occasion made forays to re-take prime surrounding land from the Russian "attackers". By the time they were relieved by 39th Corps on 5 May, KG Scherer had repulsed 100 major assaults launched by 6 Infantry divisions, 2 Tank brigades and various smaller Russian formations, at a cost of 1550 KIA and 2200 wounded during the siege. A special badge was awarded to all troops whom participated in the defense of Cholm with a "Cholm Shield" badge that was thereafter worn on the left arm.

We KG members wear the KG "tag" much like the valiant defenders of Cholm wore the shield: As an honor and as a privilege.
