What to expect...........

You may experience confusion for awhile, after all you have been in a coma.  You will be very deconditioned if you have been ventilated for any amout of time-you do not move, you are moved by hospital staff.  It is difficult to describe what happens after you wake up.  You have lost alot of hours, minutes, days, nights.  You are disoriented.  I feel that the sooner you can become adjusted to your surroundings, the better.  I was immediately put into a room with a window; I could tell the difference between day and night.  I had been "asleep" for a very long time and I didn't remember what day it was.  Make sure there is a calender, clock, radio or some other form of communication to let the person know what day and time it is.  This may take awhile as they are not adjusted to their surroundings.  Make sure the Dr's explain in terms that you can understand what is going on, what tests are going to be done next, why you have to stay in the ICU for a longer period of time.  Always be an advocate for the person if they need one.  They may not be aware, as I was not, of exactly what is going on.  Take shifts, always make sure someone is there in the waiting area or available to the hospital staff.  At times the nurses may need to know things that the person cannot tell them. Make sure that you bring favorite objects of the person's to familiarize the surroundings.  Music is excellent and it is also very soothing.  EVEN if it is the loudest and most off the wall, if they like it, BRING IT.  Bring pictures of family members, friends, loved ones.  Never assume that the person is totally aware of what has happened to them even if they appear alert.  They have lost time.  Time is valuable......Lastly, always ask questions about what the staff are doing or NOT doing.  This is your right as a caregiver if the person cannot  do it themselves.  It is VITALLY important to the person that has been so ill to have rights; as they had NO control while in a coma.
