BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Johnson and Wales Wrestling team won a tough 21-19 decision over Bridgewater State College in a Pilgrim Wrestling League (PWL) match this evening at Kelly Gymnasium in Bridgewater.  The win came without JWU starters at 125,133,149&165 as they had the night off to get ready for Saturdays quad meet.

Johnson & Wales erased a 19-9 deficit by winning the final three bouts of the night capped off by an 8-1 decision by freshman Humphrey Swift (Danbury, CT) in the heavyweight class.  Junior Brennan Ward (Waterford, CT) got the rally started with a pin at 184 to cut the deficit to 19-15.  Senior Patrick McCrohan (Berkley, MA) then posted a 3-2 decision at 197 to pull the Wildcats to within a point (19-18) and set the stage for Swift's match-ending heroics.

Johnson and Wales jumped out to a 9-3 lead as a Brian Conley (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) pin at 125 and a John Donaleski (Bellville, NJ) 12-10 decision at 141 sandwiched a 7-1 decision by BSC sophomore 133-pounder Ken Francis (New Bedford, MA).

Bridgewater State then won four straight bouts with freshman Sean Fields (Norwalk, CT) posting a 13-5 major decision win at 149.  Fields was wrestling in place of senior John Marsh (New Bedford, MA) who is ranked fifth nationally in Division III.

Senior 157-pounder Frank Cammisa (Danbury, CT) followed with an 8-2 decision to give BSC a 10-9 lead.  A 9-3 decision by junior Ethan Raymond (Middlebury, VT) and a huge pin by junior 174-pounder Zachary Bates (Leyden, MA) over Colin Lenhardt (Gloucester, VA) increased the Bears' advantage to 19-9.

Bridgewater State (0-1, 0-1 PWL) will travel to Bristol, Rhode Island on Saturday for a quad match hosted by Roger Williams University starting at noon.  Johnson & Wales (3-1, 2-0 PWL) will compete in a quad match at WPI with #15 Williams College and #30 Suny Oneonta NY  on Sunday at noon.

Providence R.I. -    The 1st Annual JWU wrestling reunion took place this weekend at The Xavier Hall wrestling room and was a smash hit. In attendance were Coach Morris, Coach Allen, All-Americans; James Gilbert, Tim Ruberg, Jerome Owens, Bryan Lenhardt.  Conference Champion; Anthony Montes. All- Conference: Pete Reilly, Robert Doherty.  JWU Wrestlers; Kevin Boyes, Tim Jones and Zach Scherr. Manager;  Lauren Simmen.

The day started out with the traditional warm –up of Ultimate Frisbee. Team 1 consisted of Reilly, Doherty and Coach Allen vs. Team 2 consisted of Montes, Ruberg and Owens. These two team battled as team 2 took a 3-1 lead early in the contest and appeared to have the upper hand in the match.  Team 1 led by the quick paced Reilly quickly scored and got 2 turn-overs to grab the 4-3 lead. Owens not to be denied, mustered 2 quick strikes of his own and grabbed the 5-4 lead. This unfortunately would be the end of team 2 as Doherty, Reilly and Coach Allen had too much stamina and conditioning, rolled to 6 start points and the 10-5 victory. Team 1 back in the day was  42-1 against all competition as they are now 1-0 in the post modern era.

The real fun began when Team Old School ( Jones, Montes, Gilbert, Ruberg, Doherty and Boyes) took on Team New School ( Coach Allen, Lenhardt, Owens, Reilly, Coach Morris and Scherr) in a 1-1-1 minute match to Crown the first ever Reunion Champion. Team New School did not disappoint as they rolled to a 17-3 victory.  Below are the breakdowns of each match.

184 Brennan Ward: This transfer by way of Colby CC was a NCAA JUCO National Qualifer

2009-2010 looks to be a reloading year, but with high expectations. Gone from the team are two All-Americans in 174 lbs. Jerome Owens and 184 lbs. Bryan Lenhardt. Freshman Colin Lenhardt 174 lbs. and transfer Brennan Ward 184 lbs. will do their best to replace those athletes and junior Michael Bastante returns at 125 lbs. after a year away.  JWU has been either 1st or 2nd at the Conference Championship each of the last 5 years and hopes to continue that streak in 2010. They wrestle one of the tougher schedules in the New England conference with trips to the Gator Duals in Florida and the National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, along with the Ithaca Invitational to start out the year.  With 47 athletes on the team to start the year, there should be good depth and competition for starting spots.

Akron, OhioJuan Vega (St. Mary’s/Rutherford NJ) recently competed in the University Freestyle National Championships at 79 KG. Vega placed 8th going 4-3 this weekend.  In this prestigious tournament Vega wrestled six Division I wrestlers, three of them being Division I NCAA Qualifiers. In his first match, he received a bye. The second match Vega def. Ray Hall (Northern Colorado) 6-3, 1-2, 1-0. The third match had Vega def. Kyle Blevins (Appalachian State) 4-0,4-1.  In the Quarters Alex Caruso (Lehigh), a D1 National Qualifier, def. Vega 5-1, 3-0. Juan Vega then had to win his next match to place. He was up against Jordan Blanton (Illinois). Blanton recently placed 4th at 184 lbs this year at the Big Tens and was a National Qualifier. Juan Vega soundly defeated him by Pin 6-1, 1:45. In the Consolation Quarters Ethan Headlee (Pittsburg), another D1 National Qualifier def. Vega 9-3, 3-1. This set up the placing match for 7th/8th. In his final match of the day, Andrew Sorenson (Iowa State) def. Vega on the clinch in the third period. The first period saw Sorenson win 7-0, the second period had Vega winning 3-3. The third period was 0-0, in which Vega won the coin toss to get the advantage position in the clinch. Sorenson was able to score off Vega trying to run the pipe on the single to score 2 pts. This marks the first time a JWU wrestler has placed at the University Nationals.
