JWJ's Summer Reading

A College Prep Middle School

General Information

James Weldon Johnson Middle School’s

2009 Summer Reading

Education is a daily endeavor that doesn’t stop just because the school year ends.  In that spirit, we believe it is imperative that students remain active learners throughout their lives, including the summer.  The Language Arts and Social Studies Departments at James Weldon Johnson have selected suggested summer reading novels for each grade level.  These novels will be used during the first two weeks of school, so do yourself a favor and read them this summer.  To help you successfully read these novels, complete the reading guides.

JWJ feels that the completion of these summer reading novels will be beneficial to our students and departments in many ways.  To begin with, it will give all students a start towards achieving their 25 Books/3,750 Pages Reading Goal established by Duval County, and a chance to have book talks with fellow students during the first two weeks of school.  Additionally, this will provide teachers a starting point for assessing individual student comprehension levels.  By allowing teachers this information immediately at the start of the year, they will be able to better plan for the individual needs for their students.  Finally, with all students beginning the year with two common novels “under their belts,” they will be able to delve into more complex thinking and analysis.
