OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The mission for this group is to raise funds to help those suffering from AIDS. The best way that we as writers and authors know how to do that is to write about it and compile an affordable (around $6.00) ebook or ebooks and send the money to the groups that know best how to spend that money. The plight in Africa seems to be the worst right now and that will be our primary concern but if we find other areas that can use the help we want to be there also.
Linda Rucker and I, Michael S. Witherspoon will be spearheading this group, but the project would not have gotten its start without The Writers Life, a group of writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry started by Dorothy Thompson. We are all writers, some published and some waiting to be and we do a lot of gabbing on Dorothy’s blog, which led us to start the ball rolling for us to break up into groups to help change this world.
This can also be an opportunity for the writers/authors of the world to show their compassion in their words and by their deeds by sharing those words to help end the suffering around the world and save lives until a cure is found. Also, for those writers/authors out there that have not had the chance yet to be published, this could be your opportunity to get your name out into the open and let people become aware of your writers voice. Published authors can certainly join us with their contributions either in their words or by donating a portion of the profits from the sales of their books. Linda Rucker, the author of "Dark Ridge", will be donating fifty cents for each copy of Dark Ridge that is sold during 2007. So what is it about, you find your self asking?
In 1948, the mountains of eastern Tennessee were peaceful, but undergoing signs of progress with the encroachment of the lumber mills. On a cool, crisp October morning, seventeen-year-old Lonnie Patterson and his younger brother Bo stumble upon a nude and near dead young woman lying under a black gum tree on the back side of Dark Ridge. That discovery sends the Patterson family and the rest of the residents of Dark Ridge into a nightmare of murder and insanity.
Convinced that she must lie to protect herself from her father’s wrath, sixteen-year-old Molly Matthews lies to Sheriff Amos Quimby about the true identity of her attacker. She names Lonnie Patterson and as sheriff, Amos has no choice but to arrest the terrified young man. But, Amos is certain that there is more to young Molly’s story and he sets out to prove Lonnie is innocent of the crime he has been charged with.
Molly soon comes to regret her lie, and when she discovers she is pregnant, she decides the truth must come out. When she tries to tell her father that her attacker was not Lonnie Patterson, Harlan Matthews erupts into a furious rage and begins to beat Molly.
Mary, Harlan’s wife hurries to her daughter’s defense and is beaten down. Lying helpless on the floor, she watches in horror as Harlan once again turns his fury on her daughter, and terrified for Molly’s life, Mary blurts out a dark secret.
In a rage Harlan races from the room only to return with a gun. He calmly puts a bullet in Mary’s brain, and then turns the gun on Molly, who runs for her life. Amos now has a murderer on the loose and he knows in his heart that Harlan has gone up to Dark Ridge. As Amos battles the elements, Harlan begins his murderous rampage. He finds Molly and as he holds the terrified young woman at knife point, Amos rushes in, gun in hand. Fingers numb from the cold, Amos’ gun flies out of his hand and Harlan attacks. As the two men wrestle for control, Molly picks up Amos’ gun and pulls the trigger. When the sun finally rises, Dark Ridge and the folks who live there are forever changed.
If her donation doesn't seem like a whole lot to you, maybe you ned to know that she only makes $1.27 per copy and her donation is 40% of that, so actually that is quite a bit. Copies of her book can be obtained from book stores everywhere (or if not, please ask for it). Get her message out and do something great to combat AIDS at the same time. Such a deal you don't find every day.
