I've been a crafty kindof person as long as I can remember, It was something I did for fun when I was a kid. Ofcourse not to say it isn't fun now, but it has evolved and I have chosen to apply this crafy DIYness to other aspects of my life.
Anyhow this is how it started--me and friends making fishing buckets out of found sticks, used ice cream pails, and string; going down to the swamp in the field and catching tad pols and snails to look at these interesting little creatures. Making a little home out of cardboard boxes, we drew all over the walls, brought my cats inside, even brought a blanket inside and slept in there. Most of my greatest childhood memories were based off of cheap entertainment and activities, making something out of nothing. It's important to not let that all fade away. I took that all with me and grew with it.
Back then I didn't do these things to survive, to cope with being poor, or a tool to escape the capitalist consumer culture I was quickly finding myself surrounded with. Now I'm trying to learn skills and create relationships to come closer and closer to becoming more self reliant, making it into a whole lifestyle, and helping others do the same. It's a constant progression that I am always working on.
Having that said, I made this site to share with you some of the things I've learnt, created, and found helpful along the way. I made this site to represent that people can still do things themselves all while in search for alternatives to the capitalist lifestyle all encroaching upon us.
I'm hoping once more people contribute to the site it will be a good place for DIY'ers alike to share their info, ideas, creations, skills, etc. I would love to see this site a share space.
Write me a message in the guestbook or email me at brendee89@hotmail.com.
Good Luck
A brief and limited definition:
"The DIY ethic is loosely tied to Punk ideology and anticonsumerism, in as much as it amounts to a rejection of the idea that one must always purchase the things that one wants or needs from others.
The DIY punk ethic can also extend to how any group or individual applies DIY political stances to daily life—especially how they avoid contributing to institutions they see as exploitive. These efforts include converting cars to run on biodiesel or vegetable oil, learning bicycle repair, sewing/repairing/modifying clothing, starting gardens, dumpster diving, etc. To a certain extent, DIY is simply a way of finding ad hoc solutions to problems that are otherwise usually solved with wealth or corporate support."
