My winter day tactics:Many carp anglers believe that in winter you should scale down everything, and i agree with them, so as soon as the first frosts of the year hit ,the summer rig is changed to :
size 10 - korda wide gape b hooks
8 lb - kryston-ite line-mainline
korda flying backlead
Also i try and use lighter leads ,when possible in the winter scaleing them down to 1 oz but no lighter. Also in winter you should cut down on the amount of bait you put in,for example if i was going for a day session, and i was baiting up with hemp 3-4 handfuls is more than anoth to get the carp munching then, maybe a handful of 10mm boiles with 4-5 in a funnel web system and 1 on the hair(like picture below).I also believe a carp is more likely to take a smaller bait in the winter,as it looks more natural.6mms and 10mms being my favourite choice.Bright baits will also help you to get more carp on the bank in winter.
Pop-ups also catch an unbelieveable amount of carp at this time of year,My favourite way to present a pop-up is a rig called the shot rig, this is created by placing a length of braid on the hook, then pinch a shot onto it ,then cutting the tag ends down till you can just see the split shot ,attached to the hook. This rig gives a very good hook hold.
When using bright pop-ups you should cast it around ever 1-2 hours till you find the fish,as the fish don't move around alot in winter and normally in winter if you can find one fish then that probaly means that his mates aren't to far away.
My spring to autumn day tactics:At this time of year you can get away with using slightly bigger hooks e.t.c i use :
size 6 or 8 - korda wide gape b hooks
12 lb - xtra soft IQ-hooklink
10 lB - kryston-ite-mainline-mono
koda flying back lead
i also go back to bigger leads 2 oz or 2.05 oz ,more bait is put in i put out 1 k of hemp,1 k of pellets,a tin of sweetcor and half a k of boilies cropped and whole and also different sizes,i also like to use bigger boilies, mainly because of our old friend mr bream any thing from a 14 upwards in lovely,i also like to tip the boilie with a bit of plastic sweetcorn, this helps to balance out the rig and adds a bit of visual attraction.
my hooklink material korda flying back lead
my boilies and also my number 1 bait.......poachers tiger nut and maple..mmmmm.
my leads made by korda i use 2 oz for most of my fishing.
